Blog It Forward - Paul Bakker

Blog it Forward - Sue Keohan

Introduction

This is my first-ever blog on SCN (or anywhere) so don't be harsh! I was first BIFed about a year ago (by Susan Keohan ) but I've finally worked up the gumption to Blog It Forward myself after further encouragement and threats from others.

Early Days

I was born in Australia, in the state of Queensland, which you may not have heard much about but it's still bigger than Alaska (and 5x bigger than Germany).

Somehow I ended up attending high school in Amsterdam which suited me just fine as there were no school uniforms and not that many rules but a great education. After that came the University of Queensland where, unusually for someone who now works in IT, I did a Computer Science degree. For free - thanks, Australian Government!

All illustrations (except one) courtesy of Wikipedia. Sorry, I abhor a camera and I've only got a dumbphone.

Working for the Man

After various jobs in Europe (including Oracle Corp) I packed my bag and moved to Central Africa to work at an oil company for a few years. It was quite an experience - I had close encounters with elephants, hippos, a gorilla and my Significant Other. I became possibly the first and only contractor sent on a course on Shell's dime, which was at SAP UK when it was still next to the runway at Heathrow. At 11am each morning the lessons would halt so we could watch the Concorde taking off. Back in Gabon I was fortunate enough to participate in one of the first SAP installations at a Shell company. Hello (SAP) World!

Concorde.jpggorilla.jpg

A varied work environment

(Fun fact: The gorillas in East Africa get all the press but West-Central Africa have plenty too. Spend some time in Gabon and you may well bump into one, even while playing golf or cycling to work.)

Following a year in Rio in a stupendously luxurious apartment (thanks S.!) we ended up in London where, for a while, I was working 12 hours a day including one 28-hour stint. No complaints from this hourly-rate contractor. Despite the long hours I got into pub quizzing, sometimes attending 3 a week. Eventually I drifted back to Australia where prolific SCN blogger Paul Bakker  told me about this incredibly useful outer galaxy of the SAP Universe called Workflow. I have been working with it ever since and I'm currently gainfully employed in stunning Sydney.

(Note: Not the actual view from my office)

Questions?

- What have been your best travel experiences?

As a member of the Australian SAP Workflow community I have of course been to Antarctica, where I experienced the memorable smell of 250,000 penguins packed together in one place. I can also highly recommend North Korea, it's like stepping into an old war movie. I've also been in the same room as Lenin, Mao and Ho Chi Minh, though not all at the same time.

penguin.jpgNK2.jpg

Beware the Leopard Seal  /   Hey, Taxi

- If you could be reincarnated as an ABAP keyword, which one would it be?

That's a silly question so I'll just say that I always snigger when I see the SAP transaction codes SCUM and SPAM, and that one of my hobbies is researching the - for SAP especially - dreaded Y10K problem

- Hey, haven't I seen you on TV?

Unlikely, but I have appeared on several quiz shows in Australia, Holland and the UK. I managed to do equally badly on all of them, even dragging poor Paul all the way to London so we could both trip at the 8K hurdle on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in front of an audience of millions. That particular episode is still on heavy rotation on Challenge TV, I'm told. Also, a few strangers have told me I look like Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg (until I take my shirt off).

- What would you be doing now if you weren't in IT?

I'll find out in 2014 when I take a year off! We hope to attend the NFL Super Bowl, the Eurovision Song Festival and the FIFA World Cup, amongst many other hopelessly over-optimistic plans. I'll try to stay active on SCN, free WiFi in Third World hotels permitting.

Fin

I'd now like to Blog It Forward to two other regulars on the SAP Workflow forum: Rob Dielemans and Anjan Paul

I read their posts almost every day but I've never met either of them - so I'd like to "pop the bonnet", as we say in Queensland. I'll add some extra questions for them (feel free to ignore or pick your own):

- Where did you first encounter SAP? What did you think of it?

- If Bill Gates gave you $1M to start a website, what would you do with it?

One Last Thing

I've been an SCN member for nearly 5 years now and somehow I've collected a number of badges and points along the way. That's all very nice but the best thing about SCN - apart from all the remarkable and helpful people here, of course - is when you encounter a wholly unexpected problem at work, plug it into your favourite search engine with palms sweating and up pops the solution, courtesy of this very website. Keep making me look good, SCN!

Version 1.0.3

2013-11-22

1. Introduction

This tutorial is a step-by-step guide to post ABAP code snippets on your blog posts or documents, on SAP Community Network (SCN) or any other website that accepts HTML editing, with the proper ABAP syntax highlighting.

2. Prerequisites

  • The website must allow the user to edit her or his posts (or documents) in the HTML format, like SCN does.
  • The convenience presented on this tutorial relies on the availability of the following third party website (last visited on November 22, 2013): http://highlight.hohli.com/

3. Code Snippets on SCN Today

As the SCN knows, the current option to post code snippets is based on a fixed set of languages, available via the Use advanced editor (top right corner, above the editing menu) > ">>" Button >> Syntax Highlighting: XML; SQL; Java; Plain; C++; C#; CSS; Javascript; PHP; Python; Ruby.

Unfortunately, there isn't an ABAP option.

Posting an ABAP code snipped, using XML code highlighting (for example), looks like this (code copied from the New ABAP Editor and pasted below):

* Examples of Subroutines
* -- Example of Passing Parameters by Reference
* http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/9f/db979035c111d1829f0000e829fbfe/content.htm

REPORT demo_mod_tech_example_1.

DATA: num1 TYPE i,
      num2 TYPE i,      sum  TYPE i.

num1 = 2. num2 = 4.
PERFORM addit USING num1 num2 CHANGING sum.

num1 = 7. num2 = 11.
PERFORM addit USING num1 num2 CHANGING sum.

FORM addit
       USING add_num1   TYPE any             add_num2   TYPE any       CHANGING add_sum TYPE any.  add_sum = add_num1 + add_num2.  PERFORM out USING add_num1 add_num2 add_sum.

ENDFORM.

FORM out
USING out_num1 TYPE any             out_num2 TYPE any             out_sum  TYPE any.  WRITE: / 'Sum of', out_num1, 'and', out_num2, 'is', out_sum.

ENDFORM.

Sadly, although the code snipped is neatly presented, the syntax highlighting doesn't show up while in editing mode and, when published (or when a draft is saved), the syntax highlighting turns out to be far from the desired result (to be fair, the other languages available show some highlights, but of course not for the ABAP keywords). Also, notice that the font isn't a monospaced one, like Courier New.

4. Good-looking ABAP Code Snippets!

Now, the good news. You can post good-looking ABAP code snippets on your blog posts and documents! Just follow this simple steps:

  1. Have your previously highlighted ABAP code snipped at hand, either from the New ABAP Editor or (not for the faint of heart) from that code snippet that was painstakingly colored manually.
  2. Access the following website: http://highlight.hohli.com/
  3. Choose the Syntax Highlighter tab (if it isn't selected already).
  4. On the Choose a language listbox, select ABAP.
  5. Under Options, check Line numbers.
  6. Paste your code snipped on the Source code field.
  7. Under Configuration Complete, click on the Highlight! button.
  8. Enjoy your Preview.
  9. Now, the most important part: under Source, there's the HTML source code generated for your ABAP code snipped. Please, select all of this HTML source code and copy it.

Back to the SCN website, you can now start your blog post or document:

  1. Select HTML editing (top right corner of the post window).
  2. Paste the HTML source code on the body your post.
  3. Click on Show Full Editor (top right corner of the post window).
  4. Enjoy the result!

  1. * Examples of Subroutines
  2. * -- Example of Passing Parameters by Reference
  3. REPORT demo_mod_tech_example_1.
  4. DATA: num1 TYPE i,
  5.       num2 TYPE i,
  6.       sum  TYPE i.
  7. num1 =2. num2 =4.
  8. PERFORM addit USING num1 num2 CHANGINGsum.
  9. num1 =7. num2 =11.
  10. PERFORM addit USING num1 num2 CHANGINGsum.
  11. FORM addit
  12.        USING add_num1   TYPEany
  13.              add_num2   TYPEany
  14.        CHANGING add_sum TYPEany.
  15.   add_sum = add_num1 + add_num2.
  16.   PERFORMoutUSING add_num1 add_num2 add_sum.
  17. ENDFORM.
  18. FORMout
  19.        USING out_num1 TYPEany
  20.              out_num2 TYPEany
  21.              out_sum  TYPEany.
  22.   WRITE:/'Sum of', out_num1,'and', out_num2,'is', out_sum.
  23. ENDFORM.

Congratulations! Now your new, good-looking ABAP code snipped is ready to help the SCN members!

On a last note: please be careful when pasting your HTML source code on a post that you have been already writing. While in Full Editor mode, make plenty of space for your code snippet (press return several times) before inserting it (in HTML mode). By doing this, when going to HTML mode, it will be easier to spot the place to paste the HTML source code (see below).

<!-- Paste your HTML source code here! -->

<p> </p>

<p> </p>

<p> </p>

<p> </p>

<p> </p>

<p> </p>

5. Current Limitations

  • While editing a blog post or document, the highlighted code line numbers appear correctly. When the blog post or document is published, only the last digit of each line number appears. This behavior may be related to the SCN posting mechanism (since the highlighting HTML code was tested just on SCN and on the third party website that generates the code, the author cannot confirm this information).
  • Disabling line numbers (Section 4) causes a  problem with the presentation, since the code indentation is completely lost (see an example below). This behavior may be related to the SCN posting mechanism (since the highlighting HTML code was tested just on SCN and on the third party website that generates the code, the author cannot confirm this information).

Below, you can see an example of a bad-looking code snippet. In this case, the Line numbers option wasn't checked for the HTML code generation. On the website that generates the HTML code, not surprisingly, this problem does not occur.

* Examples of Subroutines* -- Example of Passing Parameters by Reference* http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/9f/db979035c111d1829f0000e829fbfe/content.htmREPORT demo_mod_tech_example_1.DATA: num1 TYPE i,      num2 TYPE i,      sum  TYPE i.
num1 =2. num2 =4.PERFORM addit USING num1 num2 CHANGINGsum.
num1 =7. num2 =11.PERFORM addit USING num1 num2 CHANGINGsum.FORM addit       USING add_num1   TYPEany             add_num2   TYPEany       CHANGING add_sum TYPEany.  add_sum = add_num1 + add_num2.  PERFORMoutUSING add_num1 add_num2 add_sum.ENDFORM.FORMout       USING out_num1 TYPEany             out_num2 TYPEany             out_sum  TYPEany.  WRITE:/'Sum of', out_num1,'and', out_num2,'is', out_sum.ENDFORM.

Finally:

  • The colors of the syntax highlighting are not customizable.
  • On every fifth line, code that was not highlighted (thus, is in black color), appears in bold style (matching the line number style). This seems to be a feature of the HTML generator.

6. Conclusion

This tutorial was a step-by-step guide to post ABAP code snippets on your blog posts or documents, on SAP Community Network (SCN) or any other website that accepts HTML editing, with the proper ABAP syntax highlighting.

How to post ABAP code snippets

$
0
0

Hi SCN members,

I'm wondering, when I copy paste a code snippet in order to response on someone how to do something within ABAP, I've got several options in this WYSIWYG editor. When I press the '>>' Insert button, I can choose too put my snippet into:

Syntax highlighting > Plain / XML / SQL / c++ / c# / css/ javascript / php / python / ruby.

Then I get this lovely box:

CLASS lcl DEFINITION.  PUBLIC SECTION.     METHOD: START.
ENDCLASS.

But the key words CLASS, DEFINITION or PUBLIC SECTION are not 'BLUE'. Even not when I copy paste them from an editor directly.

And the font is also a True type, instead of the monospaced (space outlined) font. I can not change the font type there.

It's also possible to use the '>>' Insert button and hit the 'Quote' option.

CLASS lcl IMPLEMENTATION.

  METHOD start.

WRITE : / 'This looks more like ABAP, but still no syntax highlighting'.

   ENDMETHOD.

ENDCLASS.

And in there I can choose another font. So that's good. But I really would like syntax highlights,

Of course the last resort is to add the highlights manually...

CLASS lcl IMPLEMENTATION.

  METHOD start.

WRITE : / 'This looks more like ABAP, but still no syntax highlighting'.

   ENDMETHOD.

ENDCLASS.

But this is far to time consuming.

So now I'm wondering, what's best? Or is there something new coming up?

Best,

Sander

How many of you agree that asking a question with product version/release will improve the quality of discussion & lead time to answer in SCN?

$

I always had this on the back of my mind for a long time that we should always try to ask question with as much information as possible in a crispy way to get quick response/answers.

There is a saying that 'Well defined problem is half solved'.

Sometimes we keep trying to solve an issue posted and person facing the problem keeps on trying different suggestions with no success. Later on when we ask for the product Version\release we find out that suggestions given are for a different version/release. In this process, we loose a lot of our valuable time.

I have faced this problem many times and I guess I am not the only one..

So when we provide product version/release information with questions, our lead time to get answer reduces and also quality of discussion improves. The other biggest benefit is that, we open up an big search opportunity.. We will be able to search all the problems/question & answers related to product version/release for e.g. EHP4/6, PPM 5.0, Solution Manager 7.1 etc.

For example, let's say that a person has a problem in Project systems ECC6.0 EHP6. He will be able to search all the problems related to PS-EHP6 in SCN and filter his own problem if available.

My question to space editors is that why can't we enhance our searching capability in SCN similar to SAP Classification.

So,

How many of you agree that asking a question with product version/release will improve the quality of discussion & lead time to answer in SCN?

1)Strongly Agree

2)Agree

3)Disagree

4)Strongly Disagree

5)Neither agree nor disagree or No Response.

Looking forward for all your views on this...

To post this, I was eagerly searching to create a 'Poll' but later came to know that only Space editors can create a Poll..

Expecting a Poll creation for this from Jason LaxMoshe Naveh with their views.

With Warm Regards,

Ravi E

Are there any specific license for sap crystal reports runtime engine? There's something kind of free or paid?

Good afternoon,

I need to install Crystal Reports runtime engine on a server, but can not find somewhere, much less in support of SAP itself an answer to my question, is there any type of runtime license for this, I saw that Crystal Reports has several licenses but could not identify if any specific to the runtime that I need to install license exists.

Could someone help me with this question?

Thank you!

SCN Platform Update

$
0
0

Hi Community Members,

It has been a while since my last blog about our platform, and I would like to take this opportunity to give you a final update for this year.  I would like to pre-announce the upgrade of the SCN platform.  This is a minor upgrade of the Jive system, and we will be going from the current version of 5.0.1 to 5.0.6.  This upgrade will take place starting Friday, November 29 @ 6 PM CET and will conclude on Monday, December 2 @ 8 AM CET.  During this time SCN will be offline.  Below I have summarized for you a list of changes you can expect.

Key Changes

NEW FEATURE: Managed Tags

When we launched SCN on the Jive platform back in March 2012, we introduced a concept called governed metadata properties.  These properties were available to all content items, and they were in addition to user tags.  We took this approach to provide a form of tag that was predefined by SAP in order to maintain consistency across the site.  Metadata values such as products, topics, and industries are important when classifying content.  While this technically functioned, most people did not use the feature as they preferred the user tags.  This feature also introduced a heavy customization to the platform.

So, earlier this year we decided to remove the customization in favor of functionality that comes out of the box.  In order to preserve the ability to provide pre-defined user tags, we created an extension to the user tag system which allows us to pre-define tags and to provide better control over the end user experience.  We call this new feature Managed Tags.  The screenshot below illustrates how this functions, and you will see the improvement we have made over the out of the box tagging feature.

Managed Tags.png

I would like to thank the beta testers, especially Tammy Powlas and Jürgen L for their assitance as beta testers.

New application and database servers

What does this mean for you?  I really don't know, but deep down I am hoping the system continues to get faster and more responsive with each upgrade.

A Plethora of Bug Fixes

In addition to the fixes described below, this release includes a number of significant improvements to resource usage and other performance improvements.  Note that these release notes are from Jive Software and do not necessarily reflect the environment on SCN.

So, what's next?

Starting in January we will start to take a look at the latest release of the Jive platform version 7.  I can't really go into details right now, but here are some of the new features you can expect to see:

  • New mobile experience: Enhanced iOS native app and improved mobile web experience.

<Thoughts About>

SAP Innovation Blogs

for all of us interested in SAP, architecture, innovation, trends, and sharing knowledge

there is a fantastic SAP website publishing very high quality blogs on a daily basis.

The SAP website is: http://blogs.sap.com/innovation/

Interested parties can sign up to receive daily emails of the latest content.

One has to wonder, why there isn't a feed, feeding those blogs into SCN's latest bloglist.

Moving further one wonders why the two are separated ?

The blogs.sap.com site is certainly very professionally presented and the content is top

notch and as SCN is

the Social Network for SAP Professionals,

why are the two not linked and complimenting each other ?

SCN will only benefit from such quality content, and the readers of blogs.sap.com who

are not aware of the SCN will only benefit from the embracing SCN and the power of the

wider community.

Blog it Forward - Michael Mankowski

Jeanne Carboni has finally caught up to me in the "Blog it Forward" campaign.

Following the Blog it Forward protocol, here is a little history and how I arrived at SAP.

In the Beginning there was......

After a number of sales roles in the 1990's, I joined IBM in 1997 and quickly found my way into Competitive Intelligence, supporting the General Manager for IBM’s e-business Hosting business. Back in those days, the hosting business was the Wild West with companies like Digex and Exodus growing revenue (and market caps) by double digits each quarter. The dot-com bust changed all that, but covering hosting companies was a great experience.

Hosting was the backbone of Software as a Service (SaaS) so it was natural for me to keep tabs on companies that were using hosting as a foundation of their business like Salesforce.com. The IBM experience led to two years at a boutique research house covering SAP, Salesforce.com, Oracle, WebEx (remember them), and RightNow Technologies (remember them), SAP came calling.

In 2007, I joined SAP. I remember my first day at SAP very well, because my hiring manager called me and said, “Welcome to SAP,” and then mentioned she was leaving SAP to take a role at another company. After 10 minutes the initial shock wore off, and I got to work.

What was the most exciting thing that ever happened to you?

There are three. In 1998, my #1 son, Alex was born, followed by #2 Ben in 2000, and #3 Jonathan in 2002. Being present and in the delivery room as each child made their entrance into the world remains significant to this day. In those short moments, my emotions were all over the place and having to see a fresh new life added to the world really hits home. Sharing each of those three experiences with my wife, Jennifer was incredible and unforgettable.

What do you think is your most unique strength, and how do you use it?

Asking questions - I’m insanely curious (sometimes to the chagrin of my wife), particularly when meeting new people or discovering something new.  I love meeting new people, hearing their story and then asking questions to get different angles or opinions on a particular topic. I love the interaction and also try to “ask once” and “listen twice,” since we have one mouth and two ears. Listening is critical to understanding perspectives and also really helps me formulate the next question to ask.

What is your most favorite place in the world?

It has to be the beach, preferably the Jersey shore.  All I can say is when I finally settle down in my beach chair, lather on the sunscreen on, position the umbrella just right, I am in heaven. Talk about serenity now - the surf crashing, sun shining, book (or Kindle or iPad for reading only) puts me in a place of tranquility.  For a few hours, I am happily lost. With three boys, this does not last long. Reality soon hits as footballs, Frisbees and wabobas start flying at me.

Who do you admire most and why?

It’s more like whom do I admire. Veterans. Plain and simple. Particularly veterans of World War II. I spent the summer reading a three part series by Rick Atkinson on the US Army in World War II. Veterans of any conflict deserve to be treated with respect reverence for their sacrifice, but these volumes provide so much more. Understanding the emotions of soldiers in combat through words really struck me. The hardships, challenges and even the horrors these men faced is described in detail. These works strip away the glamour and put you in the soldier’s shoes and their experiences and travails. My Great Uncle Paul still lives in the area and served in WWII. Whenever we see him, he is always willing to share a few memories of his experiences during the war.

Blogging it forward to…..

I guess that I am on the hook for “respectfully requesting” colleagues to contribute to the Blog it Forward effort.

My list:

John Ward

David Trites

Ryan Somers

Sebastian Kramer

I have not given John, David, Ryan or Sebastian any prior warning (my apologies) but ask them to contribute anyway .

Please answer the following questions in your post (thanks Jeanne):

- What was the most exciting thing that ever happened to you?

- What do you think is your most unique strength, and how do you use it?

- Who do you admire most and why?

- What is your favorite place in the world?

To contribute their Blogs to the "Blog it Forward" campaign. To participate in this challenge, please compose your own blog. Title it "Blog it Forward - Your Name". Provide a link to this blog as the origination of your participation, and enter the link to your blog in the Blog It Forward Chain once you post it.

Thanks! Jeanne did mention that a badge is now being awarded to participants!

It is quite exciting for me to write my first blog in the SCN and that too for a blog competition. And the great news is that SDN is now in its 10th
anniversary and is now SCN. Though I am late for the competition, I am inspired to pen down few words about SCN. I joined SCN later part of the year 2011 and my career in SAP started the same time. I am about to complete a couple of years following SCN and in SAP too. Right from my joining SCN has been so helpful in terms of learning and solution finding.

As a starter, SCN has been my online tutor and it guided all the way during my initial project and in support time. Searching SCN will give solution to any kind of problem in the business scenarios. If finding difficulty in getting the solution, I reach SCN and post my question. There are many contributors who
constantly monitor the questions and suggest suitable solution to my issue. I do remember the names of the major contributors in SAP MM forum whom I feel, are the mentors in SAP MM especially would like to name Jurgen L.

Of late, I too started contributing to the queries and feel so happy when my solution worked and has been rewarded. It is not just the reward points which makes me to contribute to the queries but sharing the knowledge which I learnt during past couple of years, makes me so confident in replying. It is just giving back what I took from SCN. I am always excited to go through the forum and learn new things and equally excited when I share what I learnt. I would like to continue blogging whenever time permits. Thanks for your time in reading my blog.

I wish SCN all the very best and to be with us all the way in our SAP career....

My name is Srinivas, which is a very common name in south India. I born in a middle class family from a town called "Huzurabad" in Karimnagar District of Andhra Pradesh, India. Family members and close friends call me "srinu". In childhood, my family moved to a place called "Mancherial" as my father got a job in Singareni Colleries Company Limited, a Central and State owned mining company.

Here is my 3rd class group photo:

If possible, you can find me in the top row where I stand?

I studied till SSC in my home town joined in Diploma provided by State Board of Technical Education (SBTET) under Commercial and Computer Practice branch. Unluckily, the only branch was non-engineering subject but I enjoyed my three years of diploma life with Shorthand and type writing subjects.

Below picture is my Diploma college - Krishna Deva Raya Govt. Polytechnic, a 120 years old fort inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1960's period. Its a historical fort managed by local rulers under Nizam Nawabs.

Holi Celebrations in Diploma College:

I really remembered college days and enjoyed myself while uploading college pics here. I personally thank Moshe for his great efforts on such a great idea in SCN.

Later, I have done my Graduation in B.Com., and Post Graduation in MBA-Finance from Osmania University, Hyderabad. College days were always good because of not much pressure on personal and professional life. Happy days were slowly went back and started rushing for job trails. Meanwhile, I have attended Oracle Apps Classes at Ameerpet, a very big IT Center in Hyderabad. Luckily, in middle of classes, I got an opportunity to work for a Paints manufacturing company as an Accountant. Due to financial crises, I didn't look at back and joined the company without second thought. I worked there for 3 years and learnt so many things personally and professionally.

At this moment, I started learning SAP and got an opportunity as a trainee in a small IT company in Hyderabad. I am very much happy and proud to be part of SAP ERP. Currently, I am working as an FICO Consultant with ERP Logic (India) Pvt. Ltd. (link: SAP Business ByDesign Cloud Partner of the Year 2010 &amp;amp; 2011 ).

About my hometown:

I am from a town called Mancherial from Adilabad District of Andhra Pradesh, on the banks of river Godavari, one of the biggest rivers in India. We have around 15 to 20 coal mines (Under ground and opencast) surrounding the town. With the help of Singareni Coal Mines, government produces Thermal Power at NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation).

What makes me happy all the time?

There is a quote by Dalai Lama XIV - "“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions" I will be happy if I do something I like and I love it. I love to travel and visit many places (including temples) all over India. Joining in SAP is also one of the reasons where we can travel and meet many people in diversified industries.

Also, I do help poor people by donating ration and clothes in old age homes. We have a group of 5 to 6 people and donate around INR4000 to INR5000 to old age homes per month at Miyapur, Hyderabad. We feel very happy when they treat us like their grand sons and share their emotions and day to day life. Also, really felt bad many times that most of their children well settled in India and abroad, but not even allowing them to stay back at home with one time meal in a day.

Why I choose SAP as career?

As I told above, my love for travelling and work with different people made me to choose SAP as career. Till date I visit some of beautiful places in India, Ooty, Kodai Kanal, Puri Jagannatha temple, Konark Temple in Bhuwaneshwar, Mahabalipuram, etc. My travel limited to within India and yet to travel outside if I get an opportunity.

Let me answer Jitendra questions...

1) What makes you smile/laugh?

Any good joke can make me smile and I love to watch comedy movies. In Telugu film industry- I like to watch movies and punch dialogues of a great writer and director called "Trivikram". Also, I like my wife's smile very much as she always looks happy and never show her sadness on face.

2) Had you not been into software at all, where would you have been?

If not software, I like to work for police department. I tried once but couldn't make it.

3) What is the craziest thing you would have done in your life?

I try to answer this question by taking some time. But, still couldn't make it because I always behave simple and cool.....

Also, Let me answer Vivek Singh Bhoj's questions below:

What is your best moment in life?

I recently got married. My marriage is the best moment in life as I waited for years to marry the girl I loved.

How did you get into SAP technology?

As I told you in the above, due to some kind of financial crises and love for travelling made me to choose SAP as career. Luckily, without much pressure and hard work I joined in a small IT company in Hyderabad.

Blog It Forward - Sheetal Naidu

Hi Everyone,

I was blogged forwarded by Vivek Singh Bhoj and Jitendra Kansal. Thank you both for giving me this opportunity . I am thoroughly excited about writing this blog from the time i first read about the BIF challenge. Blog it forward is a great initiative started by Moshe Naveh(for those of you who haven't heard about BIF challenge, read Blog It Forward Community Challenge ). Thank you Moshe for starting this. Its really a wonderful and brilliant idea.

About Me:

My name is Sheetal Naidu. "Sheetal" means "Cool", aptly named so . I am an SAP ABAP Consultant at Mindtree Ltd, Bangalore, India. I started working just over an year ago. I chose SAP because everybody who joined from campus(along with me) wanted SAP and during the first month of training i constantly pestered my trainer with the question "Why SAP and not Java". Poor him. He could never satisfactorily answer me. I am glad i chose SAP ABAP for i like it very much. I never much liked coding during my college days. But ABAP has changed my views on coding.

I joined SCN during early days of my training but became active just a few days back. The gamification, challenges, people contributing, answering questions etc have addicted me to SCN. Now SCN has replaced my FB bookmark . My other interests are reading novels(mostly fiction), listening to music, traveling to new places, playing badminton, writing short stories and poems.

About my Hometown:

I was born at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Hyderabad also known as the "Pearl City" was established in 1591. Hyderabad is a popular tourist destination as there is a lot of historical significance attached to it. Legend has it that that Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of the city, named it "Bhagyanagar" after Bhagmati a localdancing girl with whom he had fallen in love. She converted to Islam and adopted the title "Hyder Mahal". The city was renamed "Hyderabad" in her honour. Typical to every hyderabadi(people from hyderabad call themselves hyderabadi), is the laziness, ready to help nature, friendly nature and love for food and travel (needless to say i am a typical hyderabadi ). Google hyderabad and the first few images would be of "Charminar" , "Hussain Sagar Lake", "Hyderabadi dum biryani", "Golconda Fort", "HITEC City" etc.

places to visit in Hyderabad - Hyderabad Tourism

Charminar at night. At one point of time when Charminar was the tallest structure in whole of Hyderabad, one could see the whole city from its top.

Hussain Sagar Lake. It is also known as "Heart of the world" is the largest heart shaped lake.

Hyderabadi Dum Biryani

Golconda Fort, home to the rulers of Qutub Shahi Dynasty. It is also the place where famous diamonds viz "Hope Diamond", "Koh-i-noor" etc were mined.

Hyderabad Information Technology Engineering Consultancy City, abbreviated as HITEC City, is a major technology township which is at the centre of the IT industry in Hyderabad.

So much for my hometown and now Few facts about my state:

  • Andhra pradesh(AP) is the fourth largest state by area in India.
  • It is historically called the "Rice Bowl of India".
  • It has the second longest coastline among all states of India.
  • Telugu, the official language of Andhra Pradesh, was described as the "Italian of the East "for its sweetness.
  • Pingali Venkayya who designed the National flag of India is from AP.
  • Nagarjunasagar in Nalgonda, AP is the world's tallest masonry dam.
  • Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has been acknowledged by theGuinness World Records as the single corporation having the largest fleet of buses in the world. APSRTC has 23,000 buses in its stable.
  • Theworld’s longest wardrobe can be found at Purana Haveli, Hyderabad. The wardrobe belongs to Mahbub Ali Pasha, who is said never to have worn the same thing twice.
  • The Salarjung Museum located in Hyderabad, houses the biggest one-man collections of antiques in the world.
  • The Vishnu Temple in the city of Tirupathi built in the 10th century, is the world's largest religious pilgrimage destination. Larger than either Rome or Mecca, an average of 30,000 visitors donate $6 million (US) to the temple everyday.

Few facts about my country:

  • One of the world's oldest civilization Indus valley civilization flourished in India.
  • It was a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, India was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history
  • Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here.
  • India is the world's largest democracy.
  • India is the largest English speaking nation in the world after USA.
  • India has the largest number of Post Offices in the world.

  • Yoga which is a widely spread practice today, has its origins in India and has existed for over 5,000 years.
  • Varanasi, also known as Benaras, was called "the Ancient City", and is the oldest, continuously inhabited city in the world today.
  • Chess (Shataranja or AshtaPada) was invented in India.

About Home town:

Secunderabad:

Named after Hyderabad's 3rd Nizam Sikandar Jah, it was born in 1806 as a British cantonment. It stayed under British rule until India became independent. With a sizable Christian population, Secunderabad is known for its gorgeous British era buildings, convent schools, beautiful churches and lip smacking eateries.

Below are some of the attractions in Secunderabad:

St Mary’s church

St Mary's school

This is the place where my education got kick started.

St._Mary's_High_School,_Secunderabad.jpg

Hussain sagar lake

This is a must visit place for all tourists and this is the place where all people love to hang out on weekends.

This lake apart from having boating facility is surrounded by necklace road which has the famous “eat street” serving the taste buds of all Indian and foreign tourists alike.

The necklace road has its name for being in the shape of necklace surrounding the lake.

Walkable distance from this lake you also have the famous Lumbini park , NTR gardens and IMAX theatre.

Hussain sagar night.JPG

Paradise restaurant

Hyderabad or Secunderabad is synonymous for one cuisine and that is “Mughlai” and is also called the Biryani land.

Believe me you would not like to miss visiting this place for its famous biryani.

Coming to the questions put by Jitendra:

1) What makes you smile/laugh?

Going by recent events its watching ‘Comedy nights with Kapil’ that makes me burst out with laughter.

NB For all those who don't know what Comedy nights with Kapil is?

It’s a Hindi comedy show hosted by stand up comedian Kapil Sharma aired in Colours channel.

2) Had you not been into software at all, where would you have been?

Good question I must say, wild guess would be a DJ playing pulsating music in Ibiza Island.

3) What is the craziest thing you would have done in your life?

Craziest thing was volunteering to bear hug my martial art guru in one of my trainings.

Result: needless to say could not move my shoulders back for some days.

Would like to blog it forward with below questions:

1. One thing in your life that you cannot live without?

2. Best budget holiday you had?

3. What is your favorite electronic gadget and why?

#SCNis10: How I learned to stop worrying and love SCN

10 years ago, I was sitting in the Building 3 canteen in Walldorf. Some colleagues were talking about a new network for developers. It was straight after lunch on a warm, sunny day, so to be honest, I felt a bit drowsy. And a little bit dubious – what was this all abou? Would it really affect me?

Search2.pngSEARCH

A few months, or possibly just weeks later, all my doubts vanished. Now, I have no idea how I managed without it. SCN has been a real education for me. Anytime I need to find something out,  the best hits are generally SCN content.

Create2.pngCREATE

SCN has also forced me to rethink fundamentally what I write about, and how I write it. Will this topic be interesting? What exactly is it about this topic that people want to know? When I miss something out, someone is sure to tell me ;-). And when I get it right, I love getting the instant feedback.

Angry.pngDEBATE

And this is the most important part: SCN encourages debate, discussion, and even disagreement. As a British person, I feel uncomfortable about declarations of corporate loyalty but here goes…:  I’m proud that SAP provides a forum where criticism is actively encouraged. Yes, proud – there, I’ve said it.

Proud – and relieved. I don’t think this is altruistic of us; I think it’s in our long-term best interests to hear these criticisms, and – where it makes sense – change our products accordingly.

SO: SCN makes me better informed, it forces me to write better, and it makes our products stronger. What’s not to love? Happy birthday SCN!

Starting this blog as part of  Blog It Forward Community Challenger started by  Moshe Naveh. I was invited by Jitendra Kansal and Vivek Singh Bhoj.

Thanks Moshe Naveh for starting such a wonderful initiative. This helps us to know more personal details of people whom we interact with. Thanks a lot Jitendra and Vivek for inviting me and giving an opportunity to introduce my self to the community.

We can find list of people who have already joined this challenge.

If you wish to Join BIF challenge and you haven't been tagged yet, please list your details here. Someone will tag you. Thanks again Moshe for this idea too.

Even I was tagged from here

About me:

I am Vinod Vemuru hailed from Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh the south east of India. Vinod means Happy or Joyful. As per my name and to describe my self in few words, I am Super cool , Jovial and Sensitive person.

I completed my education till 7th standard at a place which is 2 KM from my village. Walking 4 KM every day with friends was of great fun. Used to do all possible naughty things a kid can do during the way back to home from school. Accurately hitting snakes residing in lake with stones, stealing groundnuts from fields (Feeling now for those bad things we did) are the few among those. Badminton, Chocho and Goli (Local sport) were regular sports we used to play.

Completed 8th to 10th standard in a small school. We didn't have proper class rooms and hence, has to sit below trees (Open air class room).

I was the luckiest one to escape with least number of "Crow S.h.i.t.s"

Still remember our Telugu (Local language) subject teacher. For every exam, he used to keep a border mark. People who ever cross below that border would get nice beat at back with a fresh, cute and flexible stick . I am again lucky here to escape as I always used to get the exact border mark or +1. People used to wear 2-3 clothes for Telugu class

After 10th, I decided to move further with Diploma in Automobile Engineering. I would say, this is the best time I ever had in my entire education. I used to stay in hostel and do all possible crap we can (Hope I don't have to explain the teenage crap list further). What ever we do, studies was always on top of the list. After completing 3 year Diploma, completed my Graduation in Mechanical engineering from JNTU university. I can't explain how good it is to study in an University. One has to experience this. We have created our own rules to enjoy the college days.

3rd year was the life changer for me. Got selected for two MNC IT companies. Since I got job security in 3rd year, you can imagine how my 4th year went

To be honest, I never planned to come to IT world. I was hardcore fan of Design and R&D area. But after completing my graduation, joined Infosys to start my professional career. I have already posted my professional journey till now in below blog

My journey from fresh ABAPer to SAP certified FI consultant

I am leading the team of "Go Green" initiative (Don't kill and eat green vegetation and help to reduce air pollution) . Successfully converted few vegetarians to

Non-vegetarians

These are the questions I was asked for....

What is the craziest thing you would have done in your life?

Haha..I feel, definitely this would be crazy at that age...

I was around 10 years old and used to play with old tape recorder motor by connecting the +ve and -ve terminals of AA size battery. Motor runs very slow and till battery is dead. Then, I got this brilliant idea in my great mind Why to use small battery. Instead I can use 230 volts home supply so that motor runs with rocket speed

I connected the wires to plug and held the motor with my hands. After switching on the power, you know what happened!?. It really ran with rocket speed.

Here, it refers to my head, not motor..LOL...

Had you not been into software at all, where would you have been?

Definitely in one of these, Scientist(childhood dream) or Design/R&D field in mechanical engineering side.

How did you get into SAP technology?

I never thought that I would build my career in IT and SAP. Always dreaming about mechanical design and R&D field. But, I was selected to Infosys during my 3rd year of Btech (Graduation) in campus recruitment. After finishing 4th year, started my career with Infosys. During training, I was put in to SAP ABAP and then I choose to move to FICO functional after working in ABAP for 3 years.

But, I love every day of my SAP career and always appreciate people who built this wonderful software. There is something new almost every day and learning never ends. Simply, I am in with SAP. Be it ABAP or FICO, it is SAP for me It is tough to even think of changing from SAP platform.

What is your best moment in life?

There are many best moments. But, If I pick a few,

1. Whenever I see happiness on my Mom face and I am the reason for that

2. When I landed in Swiss for first timewhich is my dream place from childhood

3. When I cleared my SAP certification in first attempt with few days of preparation time

What makes you smile/laugh?

Comedy show by Kapil Sharma (He is one of the best Indian comedy king).

I would like to tag below people and ask these questions.
