10 Year Anniversary for #SCN! (#SCNis10)

2013 marks the 10th anniversary of SAP Community Network!

What an amazing milestone!   SAP Community Network was launched (originally SAP Developer Network) back in 2003 with a terrific team of innovative and visionary leaders at SAP who recognized the power and possibility of providing a place for our community of customers, partners, developers, consultants, and SAP employees to engage, collaborate, solve problems, and share best practices in an open, freewheeling online environment.  That was the SAP Developer Network – SDN!

Check out the humble beginnings of the original SDN on the Wayback Machine from July of 2003.  By March of 2004 the SDN Community started really taking shape -- this image below is what many of you will remember as the face of SDN for many years "back in the day".

SCN is 10 SDN Homepage1.jpg

Many things have changed since those early days -- but in important ways, many things have not changed.  The passion, excitement, and strong community spirit that started in 2003 is alive today and has grown even stronger with over 2 million unique visitors to the community every month, our remarkable and passionate SAP Mentors, our amazing, dedicated SCN Moderators and Space Editors, a modern and easy-to-use platform, and our most recent addition of the gamification platform with missions and badges all spring from those early beginnings of the SAP Developer Network.  As Fast Company magazine said recently, SAP Community Network has become a "social media juggernaut" that we care passionately about even as the community has grown to such massive proportions.

Celebrations in 2013

So let's celebrate 10 years of SCN!   We’re kicking off the celebration this week with a new and fun video from members, early contributors and founders of SCN, as well as some SCN team members.  Check it out here:

Between now and the SAP TechEd season this fall, we are planning some fun ways to celebrate including missions, contests, online activities and activities at SAP TechEd.  Here are a few things to watch for.

An Online Journey of SCN and Milestones

SCN is 10 Facebook Page.jpg

Every week until TechEd we will be building a virtual timeline on the SCN Facebook page– featuring a year of the SDN / SCN growth and transformation over the last 10 years.  We’ll have 10 years of SCN milestones on both the SCN site and SCN’s Facebook page. Each week, we will post a themed milestone, sharing pictures and video interviews that depict the community from the early days of inception up through the present! Expect to see a lot of familiar faces and hear how SCN began and evolved from people like Ziv Carthy, Jeff Word, Craig Cmehil, and Mark Finnern - to name a few!

All Twitter and Facebook posts will use the hashtag #SCNis10– so remember to use that in your posts or follow the conversation at #SCNis10 in your favorite Twitter client as well.

Tell Your Story, Become a Part of Our History

In addition to the Facebook timeline, the 10 Year Celebration will include a video blog competition so that you can be a part of SCN history and also earn brand new “SCN is 10” badges. There will be two ways to earn badges and a few points too:

SCN is 10 Powlas Vid.jpg

1.          “SCN and Me” video blog competition - we want to hear your story and see how SCN has helped you in your career.  Post a blog in the About SCN space in SCN with a story or share a video about what SCN means to you and tell us about some of your favorite memories through the years. Submissions will earn you an “SCN is 10 Badge”, 5 points in additional to the 10 points for blogging and a chance to win the competition. Winners will be announced at SAP TechEd!

2.          “Real Founder of SCN” video competition and poll - Since quite a few people like to claim that they started the community, we thought it would be fun to have them compete for the title. Watch eight long time, self-proclaimed founders explain in a brief video, why they should be the known as the “Real Founder of SCN”. Once the videos have been posted, you will have a chance to vote on who should be the “Real Founder of SCN”. Voting will earn you a 10 year celebration founder badge and one additional point!

TechEd Celebration

In addition to the online activities, we will celebrate 10 years of SCN at SAP TechEd as well!

SCN is 10 Demo Jam.jpg

In Las Vegas, we will feature a display in the SCN Clubhouse that brings 10 years of SCN to life. Similar to the Facebook timeline, the display will take you through ten years of SCN history, artifacts and the video blog submissions from the “SCN and Me” competition as well the “Real Founder of SCN” video and results.

This display will also give you an opportunity to post your thoughts and ideas on what you think SCN will be and look like in another 10 years. This is your chance to help us shape the future!

Data Geek Challenge

We are also teaming up with the Data Geek Challenge team to feature top contest submissions and share how SCN members are using SAP Lumira to create interesting data stories.

SCNis10 3-DataGeek.png

Let’s Get this Party Started!

We are excited to launch these activities and look forward to your participation!  Get those video cams rolling and tell us how SCN has affected your life and helped you in your career. And be sure to watch the founder videos and cast your vote so that the real founder can be recognized.

SCN is 10 Crowd Fun.jpg
The online activities will launch later this week.  Watch for more information in SCN, including detailed blogs telling how to participate in the video competitions and vote for the SCN founder. More information will soon be available about SAP TechEd celebration activities as well.

Let us know what you think. Please comment below with your thoughts, suggestions, and encouragement.   And don’t forget to tag your conversations with #SCNis10 hashtag to follow the conversation.

What an amazing milestone -- SCN is 10 Years Old -- Let's Celebrate!

How to switch to another SCN account keeping all history of the old account?

$

Hi,

I'm loggin in to SCN with my SAP Support Portal account (S-user) using SSO since years.

But this S-user belongs to a SAP customer id in my company, which I have to leave soon (SAP customer, not the company !) for business reorganzation reasons. For this S-user has several rights on certain SAP systems, it will be deleted then.

Is it possible to switch or move all my SCN history from the old account to a a new account, which is independent from a company? (I'm not leaving my company, but this might be an option in the future.)

I would like to keep all history, points, badges, favourites and communications and move it to the new account.

If it is possible, is there any step by step guide to process this?

I've searched SCN, but I didn't find a way to achieve it.

Regards,

Klaus

My replies are disappearing

Hi,

I am a experienced contributor in SCN since quite some time. I have been facing lot of issues now a days. Few of my replies are disappearing after some time or overnight. If it was hidden by a moderator, the same will be shown as message. But nothing as such. My replies are just vanishing as if I have not replied at all. This makes me so embarrassed and irritated. What's wrong with new SCN?

At times, I feel to revert back to old SCN which was much better. Although, it was not so colorful like new SCN. But still, i never faced any technical issues in old SCN. Please make SCN as stable.

Regards,

Suman

Moderator Spotlight – Grzegorz Głowack

I'm more than pleased to post my second Moderator Spotlight which is our way to thank and highlight significant community moderators. Our current moderator spotlight is Grzegorz Głowacki. Grzegorz is a very enthusiastic community member and a savvy moderator (especially for the PI & SOA space) who is well known for his passion for SCN and helping others. I'm sure you will enjoy the interview I had with him (attached below).

                         SL.jpg

Please share with the Community a little about yourself:

I was born and raised in Poznań, Poland, where I still live. It's a very nice city that I would recommend everyone to visit when they come to Poland. I started working with SAP quite early, at the age of 20, right after graduating from the 2nd year of my studies. I am grateful to my first boss for employing a greenhorn with hardly any work experience. I hope I proved him right and he still considers it a good decision (greetings, Michal!).

I consider myself fortunate to be with constantly passion to what I do. But it's definitely not my only passion. I've been doing lots of sports since I can remember: football, volleyball, swimming, badminton and  squash. Name it, I played it for sure. However, for the last seven years, my main activity was simply running. I already took part in two marathons and around twenty half-marathons and this year I decided to try something new by signing up to a triathlon (half-Ironman!). It is scheduled for August 4th in my hometown. After the even I can share some more feelings about it, but I already know it brought a lot of diversity to my training. I also enjoy good rock music and board games.

When did you join the SCN community?

I signed up in 2008 when I started working for SAP, but actively joined SCN in  the beginning of 2012. So I have been a real SCN member for only the last one and half years.

What motivates you? Why did you join?

My first contribution was a blog, where I simply wanted to share my recent experience with a poorly documented feature. Then it all started. I think I was just curious about how much more I could share, achieve and learn on my own. Less than a year later I was awarded a Topic Leader for the Process Integration (PI) & SOA Middleware space, and that felt really rewarding! I really believe every minute spent in SCN is worth it!

Why do you moderate? What spaces do you moderate?

I think it was naturally the next step to take. Right after being awarded the Topic Leader title in the PI & SOA space , I was asked to become a Moderator. I didn't even hesitate, knowing it would bring a new dimension to my involvement in SCN, and I definitely don't regret it.

What do you think is most important in your moderation?

I try to combine two important principles. The First is to take care of the entire PI space and do my best to make it a nice place. On the other hand, I always try to stay helpful for individual users.

What are the differences between moderating a small vs. a large community?

It should be pretty much the same. The only difference is the number of users, questions, threads and etc. This also increases the amount of the time that moderators have to spend doing their job. I think in a smaller community, members could get to know each other better, since they would always see same faces next to the posts. But on the other hand, size brings diversity and attracts more audiences. As far as I know, PI & SOA are  the most active spaces in SCN, and that is what I personally enjoy there.

If you could offer one bit of advice to new members or new moderators what would it be and why?

I think I am one myselfJ . But I already have a piece of advice for everyone joining: dive deep into it. The more you get involved, the more you'll like it and the more it will pay back. Read, search, follow, comment, ask when you need help, and don't forget to help others too. Also show your appreciation to those that help you.

For moderators: don't forget to get in touch with fellow moderators. There's a lot to learn from them. In addition also show your own ideas and your "fresh view" since could lead to positive changes.

How has the SCN community helped you?

First of all, I really learned a lot about PI and systems integration in SCN and I am still learning every day. This is one of the best things in SCN: that you never stop getting to know new things. It also helps to widen your perspectives. "Jump out" of your own project for a while and see some other problems and their solutions. I also like the fact that where there iare two people there are three opinions on how a given problem can be solved:).

How are you finding the new SCN?

At first, I was a little lost, but  then I not only found all the options I was previously using, but also a lot more. Since then I have never missed the old platform. Now with the Gamification platform it's even more entertaining, addictive I could even say.

Is there another moderator or community member that you've found incredibly helpful?

Definitely Michał Krawczyk. His involvement in my space has always been very inspiring for me.

If you were 20 again, what would you study?

Well, I'm 25 now and only graduated from the university a year ago. Today I can say that it was an excellent choice to study IT and econometrics in Poznań University of Economics. It gave me a solid background to understand both the technical and the business aspects of my everyday job. If I had to pick again I would choose the same.

How do you think the way you were raised affected your Career?

I have always learned that hard work pays off, and I strongly believe it to be true. Then I also discovered that positive thinking is equally important. The "yes you can" approach can really give amazing results.

If you were not in your current position, what/where would you be and why?

Two options are possible. I would either be a football star or a guitar player in a rock band. However it would be hard to beat Lionel Messi and Joe Satriani, so probably the job I'm currently working at is best for me:).

Moshe: Thanks to Grzegorz for this very interesting interview. Please feel free to ask more questions and share your feedback via the comments section below.

The SCN Innovation and Enhancements Idea Session Guidelines

$

0

The SCN Innovation and Enhancements Idea Session is a platform for SAP Community Network members to submit innovative ideas, suggestions and feedback related to our community. We aim to continuously improve SCN and its practices. Our users are an important part of this process. Since the category launch in 2010, 337 ideas were submitted, 25% of which were successfully delivered to the community!

Until today the process of reviewing ideas has been continuous and indefinite. Some ideas were kept months in their original status. This was caused by a lack of a time limit, since individual ideas can be relevant even if submitted years ago. We wanted to give these ideas a chance of gaining more votes and so allowed them to remain open, often untouched.

Read the Guidelines

Following community feedback and in order to make this category more efficient, we decided to add general guidelines to SCN Idea Place session. By making the process more transparent, we would like to encourage SCN members to participate in our innovation process and contribute to community progress. Today in order to get your idea reviewed by our team it will require at least 15 votes. In addition ideas today will have a time limit. These and other rules can be found in the category guidelines under the About tab (see a sample below). It is important to read them before posting an idea. Ideas that will not follow our rules will be archived.

Review Process Timeline

Once a week

Once a month

Once a year

Once a week new ideas will be reviewed in order to determine the relevancy to the category.

1) If irrelevant to the category the idea will be either moved to another idea session or archived.

2) If relevant, the idea will remain in Submitted status for votes, comments and other feedback.

Once a month ideas will be reviewed for voting progress.

1) An idea which received 15 votes will be reviewed by our team. The status will be changed to Under Review.

2) Ideas having less than 15 votes will remain with a Submitted status.

In the beginning of each year all ideas submitted in the preceding year will be reviewed. The review will be made based on number of votes, comments and general feedback each idea received. Based on internal constraints (ex: budget and resources) and strategic prioritization, all ideas in Submitted/Under Review stage will be addressed at that time.

Have your say

We encourage our members to log in to the category and submit new ideas. We are open to brand new ideas as well as suggestions to improve current features. Even if your idea was already submitted, you can still contribute! Help promoting ideas that were submitted by other users or challenge ideas by demoting and commenting on them. With the new threshold of 15 votes per idea it'll be more difficult for submitter to reach the review minimum. You have the power to bring them closer or keep afar from the goal.

Some ideas are big wins, some are not. The community has the power to decide!

Who (or what) is "Richie Riffle"?

$
0
0

Something that has intrigued me for years is a table in the Logistics and Accounting software component (on ECC, old R/3) with the name KRIF. The table is in package CU (Variant Configuration). The short text on this table is a riddle: "Richie Riffle". Who is Richie Riffle? Is he like Richie Rich? A text like "Configuration: Manually Assigned Conditions" I can understand, but "Richie Riffle"? A Google search for Richie Riffle is fruitless, it returns no meaningful results.

Richie Riffle could have been somebody. His name would have lent a good ring to a Beatles song. With an alliterative name like that, he could have even been a superhero in disguise for all we know, coming to the rescue of those in peril, or maybe a cartoon character that brought joy to millions of children. Maybe he was a mythical figure whose image was carved into rock walls in a cave or in some dungeon underneath a castle. Perhaps he was a lone wanderer who brought unexpected enlightenment to those he met along the way, passing out phrases with deep meaning that gave understanding to those in need of wisdom. Perhaps he was a busker, backpacking through Europe and singing songs of change (for change). Was he perhaps a champion ABAP programmer, whose fame, like those of the Olympic heroes of days gone by, has faded like an old, tattered photograph?

Whatever the case may be, Richie Riffle remains an enigma. Oh, you might claim that you met him the other time at TechEd, but we all would know better than to believe such a yarn. And almost instantly, you would lose respect from your peers, and your colleagues would hold you in lower esteem for making light of such a revered name. It is only one day in your old age, while sitting on a park bench in the sunshine and feeding pigeons, that a peculiar tingle in your spine causes you to glance around at the statue that rises majestically behind you in the shade of ancient oak trees. In a sudden moment of clarity, you realize the error of your ways when you read the inscription at the monument's base:

Sharing Knowledge Is Not That Hard - Wikis

Purpose

This blog is a continuation of a series of blogs under the heading of Sharing Knowledge Is Not That Hard. The blog discusses wikis, which are one of the many tools available to us for sharing knowledge.

Overview

Wikis are now free of moderator intervention (a new change from May 2013). From the standpoint of points, wikis are most valuable as they are worth 40 points. Note that this point assignment will be changed in the near future to match the assignment for Blogs and Jive Documents (e.g.; 10 points). Perhaps another value to wikis is that they are saved (or can be saved) in layered hierarchies.

How to Wiki

Wikis are by definition collaborative documents. A short  description of when to create a wiki is provided by Jason Lax in the Jive Document The Difference Between a Discussion, Blog Post, Document and Wiki:

Storing content that requires layered hierarchies or that will need such structure in the future.

These are mostly collaborative efforts where other users can alter the wiki where allowed.

A good starting resource that discusses wiki creation and required template was created by Brendan O’Brian; Wiki - Creation Guide. The guide is available

on the Employee Network Wiki. All SAP employees must adhere to this guide when creating an SAP Wikis. My advice to non SAP employees would be to check out existing wikis and follow the same structure, though this would not be a requirement.

Why to Wiki

  • The process of creating a Wiki is rigorous and well defined. See the SCN Wiki Guide for details
  • Anyone registered with SAP SCN can create a Wiki
  • The wikis require the use of a specific template in order to receive full points or worse suffer rejection of the wiki
  • Lots of points awarded (40 as of May 2013) for creating a well structured and defined Wiki
  • Wikis are searchable on SCN and SAP Market Place
  • Anyone can add a comment to a Wiki
  • Anyone can add and improve a Wiki
  • Wikis can be rolled back if new changes are deemed to be incorrect or un-necessary
  • Title of a Wiki can be changed at will since the URL is not tied to the title
  • Wikis can be "watched" using the functionality "Start watching this space"

Why not to Wiki

  • Anyone registered with SAP SCN can create a Wiki
  • Non SAP employees do not have access to the new Wiki template
  • Wikis are located on an external server, thus are not part of SAP SCN
  • Lots of confusion on where to create Wikis
  • Hard to get help
  • Cumbersome editor tool
  • Lots / too many rules on content and structure

My Experience

Initially I enjoyed creating Wikis. However, my preferences shifted to tools such as Blogs, and Jive Documents. I find the organization of the wikis quickly becoming hard to follow, requiring a number of clicks to get to the wiki I may be interested in. Since the Wikis live on a server separate from the SCN Jive platform, they are not part of the actual SCN Space. At this time, I only create Wikis as a continuation of an existing series. For example.; Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 - Service Pack 1 - Fixed Issues.

Examples of Wikis

Blog It Forward - Andre Sousa

My thanks go to  Lukas Weigeltfor BIF to me from his BIF Blog It Forward - Lukas Weigelt because he considers myself as "unobtrusive most of the time on the forums" but can make myself clear and straight to the point when opening a discussion. Thanks for the compliment by the way! Here we go!

About Me

I was born in a small (but very interesting) town in the center of Portugal (Viseu), 28 years ago. Then, when I was 18, I went to Porto to get my masters in Informatics Engineering at University of Porto. When I finished my masters in 2008, I moved to Lisbon where I started working for Deloitte as an SAP Consultant. I worked for several clients for 2 years: it was a very tough and challenging period with very hard projects (short deadlines and the usual pressure you find in a big consulting company). During this period I was able to develop a lot of connections with clients that made me become a freelancer in 2010, working for a few clients. One year later I had an huge opportunity to work abroad (Madrid, Spain) in a multinational project for multiple countries in Europe and I accepted! Since then I have been working for multiple countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France) as a freelance around Europe on SAP ESS / MSS, FITV, Performance Management, Recruiting, Training projects. Actually I think I am lucky to be able to work abroad but come back to Porto (where I live) during the weekends. Porto is an awesome city, one of the best places to visit in Europe:

34394_440291946779_3936601_n.jpg

Here I am on the left margin of Douro river with Porto on the background. When you come to Porto remember to taste the famous Porto Wine: one of the best wines in the world.

During the past few years I was able to experience many different cultures around Europe. For example, when we had a go-live on the year end and I had to stay in Madrid between Christmas and New Year's Eve, I found out that Santa was still rocking on the streets until January 6 which is a public holiday in Spain (Epiphany).

407675_10150440626711780_857728022_n (1).jpg

What do you like most about your job with SAP and what situations can make you furious?

Honestly I like my job with SAP because apart of having challenging projects, I think experience working as SAP Consultant gives you several opportunities to work. As so, when you finish your job in a company you might get other project easier than if you worked with other ERP / technology. Due to financial crisis in Europe now it's harder to get a job even in IT and SAP might give you some "security" on getting a job.

However there are situations that can make me mad when implementing a SAP project specially on the amount of solutions SAP is delivering for each topic and changing every year (because I think they are not very sure on which path they want to go): for example on SAP Portal, SAP delivered a few years ago SAP Portal with WD Java then moved to WD ABAP and now they are offering SAP NWBC... which is good for consultants because they can have more projects but sometimes it's difficult to recommend properly our clients. They say "why didn't you tell me that we could use NWBC?"... have you experienced the same?

What do you enjoy doing most in your life? In your free time, besides work that is?

I really enjoy to practice sports. Actually I usually go for swimming during this summer on a outdoor swimming pool next to work. This is awesome because I used to swim in a swimming club when I was in Portugal and during this period I can go there to relax a bit after work. Here it is the swimming pool I am talking about:

photo2.JPG

Here it is... relaxing huh?

And that's it! Now I want to Blog It Forward to:

  • Jan Thomas Nygaard, helped me a lot on SCN forums with valuable suggestions!
  • Siddharth Rajora, moderator of the ESS forum and one of the best contributors in SCN with large experience on every topic about ESS!
  • Ankur Jindal, also helped me on my open discussions in SCN!

Thanks to you all guys!

Questions for you (if you like):

  • What would you do if you didn't work on IT? What would you do for living?
  • What do you enjoy doing most in your life? In your free time, besides work that is? (I will repeat this one as well)

SCN Contributor Reputation Program FAQ

What is the SCN Reputation Program?

Your contributions are a vital part of the SAP Community Network. To reward our members, we've introduced extensive game mechanics to the SCN Reputation Program which award points, levels, badges and leaderboard positioning. Community members earn points when they contribute content and additional points when the community provides feedback and recognizes good quality content. Points are also awarded when members complete missions, and for other types of contributions such as participating in events or being recognized by community managers and moderators. Refer to our document on how to Build Your Reputation on SCN.

How are points assigned on SCN?

Points are assigned automatically to the author for each contribution such as a document, a community blog post or a wiki contribution. Community members also have the opportunity to award extra points for content they feel is high-quality and useful, with mechanisms such as “likes” and high ratings. In discussions, the original poster may mark answers provided by the community as Helpful or Correct. Additional points may be awarded at the discretion of community managers for certain community activities and achievements.

Activities and contributions made on SCN may reward community members with a badge and points when a mission is completed. See below for more information about missions and badges.

How many points do I earn for my contributions?

Note that blog posts created in your own user profile (personal blogs) do not earn any contribution nor feedback points. However, you can move your personal blogs to relevant topic spaces where they can start earning feedback points.

(Note: SCN Management reserves the right to modify point values at any time.)

What are levels?

As you participate and contribute on SCN, you will accumulate points that count toward lifetime points. All members are awarded a level status based on lifetime points.

Levels.png

What is a mission?

A mission is an assignment of one or more activities that can be completed to earn points and badges. These activities include:

  • Actions such as log-ins, updating your profile, viewing important content, etc.
  • Content contributions, such as a blog post, a document,, a helpful or correct answer
  • Feedback received or provided, for example: your blog post is Liked, you rate a good document

Completion of a mission can result in points with a badge, points only, or a badge only. Examples of missions include the “I Was Here” mission, the “I Blogged!” mission, the “Answer Hero Plus” mission, and many more.

Missions.png

What are the requirements to complete a mission?

Mission requirements are displayed when you “flip” or click on the gear image that shows when you hover over each mission in the Reputation tab.

First steps.pngFirst steps req.png

The requirements for each mission differ and become more challenging as you continue to earn them. Missions can also be completed more than once (these are known as repeatable missions). In the case of repeatable missions, you continue accruing the mission points whenever you complete the mission an additional time. Your completion bar shows 100% the first time you complete the mission, then it starts over from 0% again and never reaches 100% again since you can repeat the mission indefinitely.

What is a badge?

Badges are icons that are earned as missions are completed. In your user profile Bio tab you can see badges earned as well as badges greyed out, yet to be earned. When you hover over a badge you can see the name of the mission.
Your user profile reputation tab allows you make your 3 favorite badges visible to the community in the “Me in Three” section. These are badges that show in your hover card when other members hover over your name on SCN.

badges.png

What are leaderboards?

Leaderboards display the top contributors in every space based on 12-month (rolling points). This means that every day your number of points in a space is calculated and displayed in the leaderboard depending on the points you received in the past 12 months. However, the About SCN space is an exception; it displays an SCN-wide leaderboard with lifetime points and the top 20 contributors.

leaderboard.png

What is a Topic Leader, and does it differ from someone who appears in a 12-month leaderboard?

A Topic Leader is a member who is among the three leading contributors in a topic space on SCN, at the end of a 12-month contest period. The contest period starts each year on August 1and ends on July31. Topic Leaders receive additional recognition at events such as SAP TechEd conferences. More information about this program will be made available mid-2013. Someone who appears in a 12-month leaderboard is recognized for being a top contributor in this area, based on 12 month rolling points.

How do I know my current status in the SCN Reputation Program?

On every page on SCN, next to your name (when you are logged in), your lifetime points are displayed. Clicking on these points displayed opens a window that is a summary of your achievements, easily available to you when you navigate SCN.

You can find more information about your status in your user profile, the Bio tab gives you a summary of your achievements such as lifetime points and lifetime point level, and badges earned.

The Reputation tab is where the most detailed information about your reputation is displayed. Across the top of this tab you will see your achievement bar, which displays your points, level and badge information along with a recent activity feed.

In the achievement bar, you can also choose (using the Me-in-3 feature) which 3 of your earned badges should be displayed on your hover card, thus displaying the badges that you are most proud of.

On the left hand side of the Reputation tab you can also access the following pages:

  • History page, which displays all points earned, as part of a mission completed, over the last 6 months

  • Missions page, which displays the missions you have completed and earned badges for, a progression of the badges you are in the process of completing and who has recently completed these missions. When you hover a mission tile, a gear button appears, and clicking on it flips the tile to reveal the requirements needed to complete the mission.

  • Expertise page, which displays the spaces where you have participated (participation means writing content, such as blog posts, documents, comments, and replies in discussion threads). Your lifetime points in the topic spaces in question are displayed, as well as any badge that you may have earned by completing missions specifically designed for this space. (Please note that at the time of gamification launch in April 2013 there are no space-specific missions available yet.) Also, your point history in the space is displayed on the flip side of the space tile; you can access it by hovering over the space tile and clicking on the gear button.

  • Ranking page, which displays your rank across all of SCN, as well as your rank amongst your SCN connections (people you are following and people who follow you).

I have multiple user IDs on SCN, is it possible to consolidate my IDs and my points?

We currently do not have functionality to merge or consolidate SCN user IDs. Please check in regularly to find out when this functionality will be available.

Experienced User Questions

What changed with SCN? It looks different.

SCN has enhanced the reputation system with a new gamification system. Please refer to Chip Rodgers’ blog post to learn about the new system. Link:http://scn.sap.com/community/about/blog/2013/04/28/we-re-live-with-scn-gamification-scngameon

Why did my point quantity change next to my name at the top of the page?

The points that appear in the masthead or top of the page are now displaying lifetime points instead of the12 month rolling points. These points formerly displayed the points you acquired over the past 12 months, but now display your lifetime points.

Why has my level changed?

The new gamification system has incorporated more levels to the reputation program.

All members are awarded a level status based on lifetime points.

Where did my active contributor status go?

The active contributor levels are replaced by site wide lifetime point levels. These ten new levels are now managed by the new gamification platform that was introduced in April 2013.

I just achieved a new level but I didn't get the e-mail from SAP, what happened?

Emails are no longer sent when a member levels up, i.e. achieves a new level.

What happened to the top participant list?

The top participants widget has been replaced with leaderboards.

Leaderboards display the top contributors in every space based on 12-month rolling points.  This means that every day, your number of points in a space are calculated and displayed in the leaderboard depending on the points you received in the past 12 months. However, the About SCN space is an exception; it displays an SCN-wide leaderboard with lifetime points and the top 20 contributors.

Why am I not showing in a leaderboard?

Leaderboards display the members who have earned the highest amount of points in specific topic areas over the past 12 rolling months.  If you want to appear on the leaderboard, you must be one of the most active contributors with the highest amount of points earned in that particular space.

Please note that leaderboard points in a sub-space do not roll up to a space.

If you are very active in a space, it doesn’t mean that all your points go into the space. When you complete a mission, the system determines where the points go to by identifying where the last action that got the mission completed happened. It can be easily defined when a mission is simple: publish a blog post. In that case, the points go to the space where the blog post was published. But if a mission is more complex and involves feedback from others, or viewing content somewhere, the last action could be in a space that you would not have expected.

Why is a space showing in my “expertise” area (Reputation Tab) when I did not contribute?

This is a result from participating in a space even if you don’t earn points by doing so.  Also, you may be earning points in spaces because you complete a mission in that space. Certain mission points go to the space where you completed the last requirement that resulted in completing the mission.

Why do I have “expertise” showing in spaces where I have zero points?

This is a result from participating in a space such as leaving a comment. You may be participating in a space but not earning points. For example, we don’t give points for writing a comment.

Why can't I complete a mission after finishing the requirement specified?

The requirements are only taken into consideration in topic spaces. Actions taken in personal blogs do not count toward mission completion.

How does the system suggest the new missions to me? What is the reasoning behind that?

The system tracks your activities in SCN and checks how likely you are to complete a new mission. It suggests a mission that you can take and complete based on your past activities.

How do I earn a badge?

Badges are earned once you have completed missions that award badges. In your user profile bio tab you can see badges earned as well as badges greyed out, yet to be earned. Go to your profile reputation tab to see details about missions and badges.

What is a badge?

Badges are icons that are earned as missions are completed. In your user profile Bio tab you can see badges earned as well as badges greyed out, yet to be earned. When you hover over a badge you can see the name of the mission. Your user profile reputation tab allows you to select your 3 favorite badges and make them visible to the community in the “Me in Three” section. These are badges that show in your hover card when other members hover over your name on SCN.

Why aren’t my points appearing immediately?

If you do not see your points appear it may be because your post is in pre-moderation.

In order to prevent abuse and spam, SCN automatically moderates new members. Content will not be published until a moderator grants approval.

Is there a limit on the number of badges that I can earn?

No. There is no limit on acquiring badges.

How do I change my hover card badges?

Go to your user profile, then reputation tab and hover over your badges displayed in the achievement bar at the top. Here you can make your 3 favorite badges visible to the community in the “Me in Three” section. These are the badges that show in the card that opens when other members hover over your name on SCN.

Why are some of my badges missing in the reputation tab achievement bar?

If you do not see all of your badges displayed, they are appearing in the “Me in Three” section of the achievement bar at the top of your page. These are the badges that show in the card that opens when other members hover over your name on SCN.

How far back does my point history go?

The past six months of your point history is displayed in your profile’s reputation tab under history.

Where did the wiki point request button go?

The wiki point request button has been discontinued. We are no longer manually assigning points for wiki contributions. Please read Moshe Naveh’s blog for more information. Link: SCN Wiki points allocation changes

I have a URL to someone’s reputation tab from SCN, but it no longer works.

Reputation link URL’s have changed with the new gamification system. Please go to the user profile reputation tab to obtain the new link.

What missions can I complete on SCN, is there a list?

The SCN site-wide missions that will launch with gamification are listed here.

Note that some missions are "progression missions", meaning you have to earn "prerequisite missions" before you can see them or earn them. Additionally, some missions have a certain Level requirement, for example you must have attained Bronze level or Gold level to be eligible to earn those missions.

Also, some missions are hidden until earned. These are "surprise" missions that you will not realize you are completing--you cannot follow the progress you have made towards earning those missions. We trust you will be happy when you find that you've earned one!

SCN is 10 Submission - Share Knowledge to Gain Knowledge

$

Chip Rodgers wrote this 10 Year Anniversary for #SCN!  (#SCNis10) earlier this week. Below is my submission on how SCN has helped me.

I've learned BW, Visual Composer, BSP's, and more all through SCN.  Lately I've used the free tutorials at sap.com/LearnBI and I have also taken advantage of the information in the Product Roadmap space.  If you can't attend SAP TechEd (aka "SCN Family Reunion" per Mark Yolton ) replays are available too on SCN.

If you are interested in learning more about a product, take Thomas Jung advice and start following that space.  I also like the sentiment expressed by Angad Singh which is to "share knowledge to gain knowledge".

I look forward to seeing your SCN is 10 contribution too.
