Auto Login Enabled For Good

$
0
0

logo_ignite_Final.gifIn February, I published the post Tales of Mystery and Authentication in which we announced the highly anticipated auto login feature, immediately followed by A Necessary Update On Auto Login just to announce it was disabled again. A couple of issues with the platform dealing with the rising amount of permission checks to be managed and the resulting performance impact made it necessary for us to go back to our office cubes and fix them.

To remind you, the promise of auto login is to get you logged in to SCN automatically at visit without having to click on the login link in the header. In order to achieve this it is relying on an existing authentication session either via checking Remember Me in the login screen or having a browser certificate in place. Tales of Mystery and Authentication has more details on the exact working of this feature.

You may notice that it is close to four months now since A Necessary Update On Auto Login was posted and expectations where to have this fixed much sooner. We used the time to analyse the implementation with the SAP ID Service team and build a more robust, scalable version of auto login. We also improved our load testing framework to simulate the much higher number of authentication requests by removing the dependency to the number of test accounts. In between there was also the SCN Gamification release, which we have been working on in parallel for the whole time, not to mention the SAP ID Service team releasing Social Login via Twitter and Facebook.

That said, since last Monday, auto login has been enabled and we haven't seen any significant issues since then, which is why I'm confident that auto login will stay with us.

The basic architecture hasn't changed. We still rely on a cookie called IDS_PassiveLogonDone, as described in Tales of Mystery and Authentication. Cookie handling can be hard with the client side browser and all its modern extensibility options in place. In case you see auto login not working as expected on your side, please head over the the SCN Support space and let us know. Feel free to leave a comment here and let us know how it is working for you.

First of all, i would like to thank Ashwini Deshpande and jitendra kumar kansal for tagging me in her BIF, i liked the pictures you shared for your city, i really adore this green nature, and also a special thanks to Moshe Naveh for starting this, actually it's a very simple and powerful idea, it makes SCN more alive.

Also i want to announce that SCN became my social network instead of Facebook and Twitter .

I became so addicted to SCN!!

My name is Ahmed Yehia,  i am an ABAP consultant  in Post for Systems, i am interested in programming, many people see programming as a boring stuff, but i find it exciting, fun and challenging, but as people say: Programming: love it or leave it!!

I love my work so much, and this diagram shows exactly what happens with me every day

I live in Egypt, and am proud to be Egyptian, a funny fact about my country is that we had two revolutions in one year .

In our revolution many protesters occupied Tahrir square on 25 January and 30 June asking for freedom.

What is your next goal in your life?

My next goal  is to get placed in SAP.

Which is that thing makes you do good things in life?

BIF seeding

So, as is the established way I'll first thank the people who blogged it forward to me (and there were a few, as I seemed to have timed my request to join the chain just right when a few other people were paying it a lot of attention too!) :-

Thanks to all three of you!  Having three "BIF seeds" means I can be picky about which questions I answer so hopefully this blog will be a bit easier for me.

Introduction

About Me

My name is1Gareth Ryan and I'm currently a Principal Netweaver Development Architect working for Atos in their UK SAP Practice.  I've worked with SAP for over 14 years now (I think!) after being involved with the implementation and roll-out of SAP for United Biscuits, where I was originally an apprentice Mainframe Programmer learning Cobol, JCL, DB2, etc.  As with many people, getting into SAP was more through luck and I just happened to be young, enthusiastic, cheap(!) and supposedly capable so UB picked me for their newly set up SAP ABAP Development team, in turn promising me the riches and spoils that only a life as an SAP developer can offer.  If any of the management from UB are reading this - I'm still waiting...

I spent a month being trained by ABAP experts from what was then called Andersen Consulting - I blame them for everything since. I can still remember my first developments in the SAP world - customising the standard Purchase Order SAPScript output, and creating a custom report (the "Daily Performance Report") which was used by all of UB's production sites in the UK to monitor erm, daily performance...  If anyone reading this is currently responsible for maintaining that report, I am truly sorry.

Since then, I've worked on many varied projects and with many SAP technologies, mostly around the UX/UI world.  My current focus is around Mobility, BPM, BRM, PO, etc.  I've been lucky to have meddled with most of SAP's technology as mentioned, and find it as equally rewarding as frustrating for the average developer.  I'm really enjoying learning more about SAPUI5, HANA, Fiori and watching the SAP Mobility Platform mature (I don't think it is quite there yet but that is a whole other blog!)  I still dabble a bit in ABAP (when someone is desperate enough to let me!) but most of my work is in the Java stack these days, or in other "non-SAP" technology.  Although I've somehow managed to get the fabled "architect" word into my job title, I still manage to get my hands dirty with code as often as possible and to be honest, that is ultimately why I still love my job in the SAP world.

My Hometown

One of the things I've really appreciated about the BIF content so far, is reading little bits about where people grew up and live, and the history and interesting facts about those places, so I've again followed the norm and here is a section about my hometown - Liverpool...

I'm born and bred in Liverpool which makes me a scouser2, spending my entire 36ish years living here.  My job and personal life has afforded me the luxury of travelling and seeing many parts of the UK and the wider world but I'm yet to find another place I'd be as happy living, as here in Liverpool.  No doubt, when Liverpool is mentioned everyone thinks of two things - football and music - thanks to the historical (but not so much current) success of Liverpool FC and a little band called The Beatles.  I'm not a football fan and have never really loved The Beatles' music (although my uncle briefly played for numerous football teams back in the day, including Everton FC, when being a professional footballer didn't involve getting paid obscene amounts of money, and he also went to school with Pete Best.  You would think the city was trying to force me to be passionate about two of it's most famous exports!)

Here's some common & (hopefully) lesser known but interesting all the same facts about Liverpool (I can't be responsible for inaccuracies here so take some with a pinch of salt!):

  • Liverpool holds the Guinness Book of Records title for being the "Capital of Pop" - more artists with a Liverpool origin have had a number one hit than from any other location.  The Cavern Club (home of The Beatles) has a "Wall of Fame" with artist's names inscribed on Matthew Street:
    cavern460.jpg
  • Liverpool unusually has two cathedrals - the Anglican and the Metropolitan - with the Anglican being the biggest in the UK and the fifth largest in the world (Anglican is on the left in this picture.)
    The-Two-Liverpool-cathedrals-at-Night.jpg
  • The Liverpool - Manchester railway was the first passenger carrying railway in the world and on the opening day, a local MP fell under the train and was the first railway fatality!
  • The city of Liverpool is over 800 years old.
  • Central Park in New York was designed with influences from a park within Liverpool, and Liverpool has the most parks in Britain outside of London.
  • The first act of the American Civil War was the firing of a cannon made in Liverpool and the last act of the American Civil war took place on the river Mersey when the last confederate raider (CSS Shenandoah) surrendered to the Lord Mayor of Liverpool.
  • The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, founded in 1898, was the world's first such institute, devoted to tropical health.
  • Liverpool is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe and the largest Chinese arch of its kind outside of China.
    Chinese_Arch_-_geograph.org.uk_-_1021559.jpg
  • The port of Liverpool was pivotal in the slave trade as well as trade in cotton, with a vast share of both being transported through the port at some stage.
  • The Titanic was registered in Liverpool, and had many Liverpool residents as crew.
  • Riots in Liverpool in the early 1980s dramatically changed parts of the city but ultimately triggered longer term change and improvement.

I could go on (and have found it fascinating finding out more about my own city) but instead, I'll leave you with this beautiful view of the waterfront at night:

Here is a nice website listing lots of "firsts" for Liverpool, for those who are interested further.

BIF Challenge

Answers by me

  • Jitendra asked - Had you not been into software at all, where would you have been?
I came very close to taking up an apprenticeship in vehicle engineering working for Fords motor company who were based in Halewood in Liverpool.  I always wanted to be a car designer but by the time I was old enough, Fords had stopped that apprenticeship scheme so I applied for the engineering instead.  I didn't quite make the shortlist (I was a reserve after hundreds applied for only a handful of positions) but looking back, and seeing what has happened to the motor industry in the North West of England, I think I had a lucky escape!
  • Tammy asked - What do you enjoy most in your work and why?
That's easy - the constant variety in both tasks and people I get to work with.  Being in consulting for a large SI who are an SAP Partner means I spend time on various projects, at different customers all of the time.  As much as I love meddling with code, I love even more meeting new people and building relationships with them.  The whole social networking revolution has been great for me, especially as I have now built a great network on twitter and here on SCN.  (My twitter & LinkedIn details are linked throughout this blog - please don't hesitate to connect/follow/send abuse if you like!)
  • Ahmed asked - What are your Interests/Hobbies?
I've always been fascinated with cars, possibly because my father worked for Ford although he has no interest and doesn't even drive!  When I was younger and had more time and money, I'd spend a lot of time meddling with them and ended up with a nice (in my opinion) little monster in the shape of a Nissan Pulsar GTi-R (see below) but as I've matured (stop sniggering at the back) I guess I'm like most other people, enjoying time with my family and friends, sampling real ales and more recently, running around after our 3 month old son Harry!
I'm a bit fickle when it comes to hobbies - you name it I've probably tried it - but my one passion throughout all my life is music, collecting songs and albums and listening to all sorts of "eclectical" stuff.  Mrs Ryan thinks I usually listen to a load of old *****!
    Nissan Pulsar GTi-R.jpg

Questions to my BIF seedlings

  1. What is your absolute favourite music album/track of all time and why?
  2. Do you have a favourite quote/saying that perfectly describes your day to day job?

I'll nominate

Picking a couple of people at random from the current BIF table, I'll pass the baton on to Ajay Maheshwari - Freelance SAP Trainer and Akshay Gupta - I'm also going to suggest Steve Rumsby as I've just noticed he's not done a BIF (that I can find) and I'd be interested to see what he writes.  Sorry Steve

Notes:

1There is a bit of an on-going joke about my name, and how I get wound up when people call me Ryan...  Sometimes it gets so bad on projects I add "My name is Gareth" to the end of my email signature.  People still call me Ryan. You see, Gareth is a Welsh name (my father is from Wrexham, a town in North Wales) and Gareth is a relatively common christian name around these parts.  However, in many parts of the world Ryan is the more common christian name, so often people see my name on emails or other communication and call me Ryan.  Everyone (except me!) finds this hysterical.  So much so, I wanted to call our newborn son Ryan Bryan Ryan, just to avoid any confusion but his mum wouldn't let me

2 What is a scouser?

My final thought - I'll leave that to a nice tweet I found some time ago:-

Hope everyone enjoys reading this - sorry it's so long

I've been sitting here watching the BIFs go by wondering how long it would take for somebody to tag me. Finally I have Gareth Ryan to thank for dropping me in it! You can read his BIF here.

About Me

Like Ryan Gareth I was born in Liverpool. I lived there for the first 18 years of my life before I came to the University of Warwick to study Computer Science as an undergraduate. After graduating I immediately started work here and have never managed to escape. I've had several different jobs here, all IT related. At the beginning of 1998 I joined the team selecting, and then implementing, what turned out to be SAP. The rest, as they say, is history.

A few months ago I was privileged to be named an SAP Mentor. I wrote a blog at the time describing my reaction to that news - What does it feel like to be named an SAP Mentor?. In that blog I mentioned some work I'd done with a programming language called C++. I spent 5 years, from 1993 to 1998, working on what turned into ISO/IEC 14882:1998 (now superceded, twice). This was an international effort that let me travel to lots of different places around the world - as far east as Japan and as far west as Hawai'i, and many different cities in the US. Sadly, I had to miss the meeting in Australia . For the majority of the meetings I attended I had the grand title of Principal UK Expert (and yes, that does get abbreviated to PUKE) so I have represented my country at something!

Outside of work I am married and have two children - a daughter of 16 and a son of 13. We also have a cat of 6 and a dog of just 15 months. My wife was also a student at Warwick at the same time I was, but we didn't meet until after we had both graduated. We have been married for 20 years now. We live in Coventry, close enough to the University that I can walk in just about 30 minutes. Coventry isn't a large city, and we live right on the edge of it. Within a few minutes we can be in open countryside, and yet only 15 minutes drive from the city centre. Despite having grown up in a big city, I'm not really a city person. I love being able to easily get to somewhere green and open. Gareth mentioned that Liverpool has two cathedrals. Coventry does too, sort of. It used to have just one, which was bombed in WW2 and is now just four walls. Its replacement was built right next door. You can see them both in this photo:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/83/Coventry_cathedral.jpg

I'm going to break a little with BIF tradition now. My remaining photos are not of either my home town or of me. Two of my hobbies are astronomy and photography. I especially enjoy combining the two and taking photos of objects in the sky. Here are a few of my favourites, starting with one of my favourite photos of the moon. All these photos were taken from my garden, so they are cool photos from my home town rather than of it!

8292973169_b9fe0eed7f_o.jpg

This next one is a long exposure (70 seconds) shot taken when the International Space Station was passing overhead - that's the long streak in the sky. The bright object at top right is actually the moon, not the sun. It doesn't look it, but this was taken at night!

8473262429_175704ccfd_b.jpg

And speaking of long exposures, I do like trying to make "star trail" photos. As you can see from the previous shot in my part of the world the sky is too light polluted to take exposures long enough. This one is lots of short exposures layered together, but it went wrong and produced dotted rather than solid lines. I quite like the effect, though!

8452059148_df020291f6_b.jpg

Finally, I've recently been playing with using a webcam with my telescope, and getting results like this:

The Questions

Gareth asked:

  1. What is your absolute favourite music album/track of all time and why?

I always find it difficult to articulate why I like particular pieces of music. Sometimes it is about the music itself. Sometimes it is about the context in which I first encountered a piece of music and the memories it brings back. If I had to choose just one piece of music as my all time favourite it would be Elgar's Cello Concerto, preferably played by Jacqueline du Pré. Whenever I hear this music playing I just have to close my eyes, sit back, and just disappear into it. I have three recordings of it (one by du Pré) and have heard it performed live twice. There's another performance coming along locally that will be hard to resist...

Just to add a bit of variety, I would say that there are a couple of Dire Straits tracks high up on the list, along with almost anything sung by Eva Cassidy.

  2. Do you have a favourite quote/saying that perfectly describes your day to day job?

I have several quotes that don't quite describe my day job but come distressingly close. My favourite is, "
My definition of an expert in any field is a person who knows enough about what's really going on to be scared." by PJ Plauger. (I worked with PJ during my years working on C++, and while I never heard him say this, when I read it I hear it being spoken in his voice!) Not that I'd call myself an expert because "An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field." (Neils Bohr). I'm sure I've got plenty more mistakes to make yet.

Onwards and upwards

Now I have to choose the next people to join in the BIF chain. That is hard as most people seem to have been BIF'd already. One I see hasn't been is Carsten Nitschke, a fellow newbie Mentor. And I'll choose one from the BIF request list - Akhilesh Singh.

My questions to you are:

  • What animal would you most like to keep as a pet (however impractical!)?
  • What is your earliest memory?

SCN Reputation Program Overview

$
0
0

SAP Community Network (SCN) is a dynamic, diverse community. Being part of this vibrant, passionate community is like being part of a family. As you become active on SCN, you will grow your knowledge, build an expert reputation and make friends.

Regular participation is important for getting the most out of your engagement within the community. Not only do you receive ongoing feedback and interactive discussions, but being active on SCN is also a rewarding experience. To support the experience, we have established a reputation program with game mechanics to measure activity, thank you for contributions, help you establish credibility and visibility as a leader in the community -- while having fun.

Building Your Reputation: Points and Status

Once you’ve become a member of SCN, you start accumulating lifetime points. These points never expire and are displayed at the top of page next to your name.  SCN awards points to you when you contribute, or when you complete "missions."

You receive additional points when community members recognize the value of your quality contributions by "liking" or giving good ratings to your content.  If you regularly contribute, you will increase your chances of reaching the leaderboard of your Topic Space (based on the points in the last twelve months).

Note that you are able to contribute in your “Personal Space” as well. However, that area does not earn you points and will not show up in search. SCN assigns points for discussion messages marked as correct or helpful answers, blog posts, documents and wiki contributions. More detailed information can be found in the SCN Reputation Program FAQ.

Levels

All SCN members receive a level status based on their lifetime points. As you participate and accumulate points, you have a chance to celebrate achieving a higher-level status. There are ten levels: they begin with Glass (0-4 points) and continue to Diamond (15,000+ points).

Missions

A "mission" is like a virtual scavenger hunt, assigning you with one or more activities to complete that earn points and badges. These activities range from providing feedback on content to writing a blog post, or answering a question, or being recognized as an influencer and thought leader. Completion of a mission can result in points with a badge, points only, or a badge only. Examples of missions include the “I Was Here” mission, the “I Blogged!” mission, the “Answer Hero Plus” mission, and more.

Badges

Badges are icons you earn once you’ve completed a mission. These symbols give you an opportunity to display where you have been during your SCN journey, as wel as which accomplishments you’ve achieved.

Increased Visibility

Visibility in the community is key. Whether you are an SAP customer, partner or employee, you should take advantage of the opportunity to build your reputation within the community. Becoming an expert has its benefits. Topic Leaders (top three contributors in a point category) are recognized on stage at the annual SAP TechEd events. Also, the biggest influencers -- known by their actions, expertise and helpfulness -- are sponsored as SAP Mentors, receiving free admission to SAP TechEd. They also receive coveted SAP Mentor shirts.

So how can you increase your visibility?

The first step is to maintain your user profile. Your user profile provides other members valuable information about your experience, recently created content, the people and places you follow. The reputation tab will be the place where you shine, highlighting recent contribution points, missions and badges earned, topic expertise, and ranking among the community and your connections.

The second step is to give back by contributing high-quality content to SCN. The SCN platform is social and you will be recognized for your actions. The best content is prominently featured on the site. You may be recognized formally as “Member of the Month," or your peers may nominate you to become an SAP Mentor.

Additionally, SCN Moderators are always on the hunt for subject-matter experts with strong community spirit to join their ranks. Display those characteristics and you, too, may be nominated for the role!

Sharing Knowledge Is Not That Hard - Jive Documents

Purpose

This blog is a continuation of a series of blogs under the heading of Sharing Knowledge Is Not That Hard. In The blog discusses Jive Documents, which is one of the many tools available to us for sharing knowledge.

Overview

Jive Documents can be created directly in any SAP SCN Space. Jive Document can be thought of as a ‘How To’ guide.

How to Jive Document

A good definition of a Jive Document is provided by Jason Lax in the Jive Document; The Difference Between a Discussion, Blog Post, Document and Wiki:

Documents are to share your articles and procedures.  These are informal, impersonal 'How-To' style guides or concise overviews of a topic or product. Other uses include links lists or related assets for a give topic or product, sort of like a resource guide.

There is no formal template, though I myself try to follow the template as designed for wikis by Brendan O’Brian. Unfortunately the guide is only published on an internal SAP wiki. However the wiki Deploying Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 runtimeis a good, live example of the preferred structure. Following a consistent format makes the document look more professional and trustworthy.

Why to Create Jive Documents

  • No template to follow.
  • Jive Documents live in their SCN Space.
  • Anyone registered with SAP SCN can create a Jive Document.
  • Jive Documents can be a collaborative effort.
  • Jive Documents are published as soon they are done - No Moderator approval required.
  • The author can choose who can modify the document.
  • Count of views is available at the end of every Document.
  • Comments by readers are allowed.
  • Can be viewed in PDF format.
  • Can have email notifications when commented on.
  • Jive Documents can be highlighted on their SCN space under the Featured Content.

Why not to Create Jive Documents

  • No template to follow
  • Anyone registered with SAP SCN can create a Jive Document
  • Jive Documents are published as soon they are done - No Moderator approval required

My Experiences

Jive Documents have become my preferred way of authoring longish technical content. And because it is a technical content, I pattern the look and feel of my Jive Documents on the wiki Creation Guide (see How to Jive Document section above)

I like the fact that a Jive Document can be highlighted on each SCN Space, thus increasing it’s visibility and thus it’s impact. As with blogs, Moderators of each SCN Space can add the Document to "Featured Content" and "Related Resources. My only irritating experience is that a reader of the Document is able to post comments, which often turn out to be questions better posed to the SCN Space as a Discussion. However, the neat thing about Jive Documents is that there is the ability to not allow comments. Also, collaborators can be chosen individually.

A way out to explore SAP with limited resources

Hello Friends,

Though this blog, I want to take a step to make a concrete way for learning and eventually digesting the concept of various SAP modules in which we work on. Herewith I am mentioning the steps which I have taken to build my stiff ongoing career in SAP. I have started my career with an non IT company where I got chance to explore myself to the world of SAP under the guidance of a SAP INDIA consultant from whom I have got the real test of SAP and that has addicted me towards the wave of this ERP system. So, even after completion of his project (after he left ), I linearly concentrate on various new initiatives like EHP upgrade , SP upgrade, kernel upgrade etc. belonging to BASIS part. Yes, I have faced various issues due to lack of my knowledge, but the confidence that the SAP INDIA consultant has build in me has enabled to dig my doubts brutally and sort out all of them to get into the solution. I hope, you guys are not getting bored off ..

During my isolated BASIS ADMIN life , I have followed following steps , which are no doubt very helpful and I am sure SAP freshers can also follow the same to learn more & more ....................

1. Reading SAP help (Bible of SAP) for each and every daily tasks to mold each concept appropriately .

2. Try to troubleshoot any  unsolved issue though SCN.

3. Explore yourselves with IDES, Sandbox systems.

4. Do as much as R&D you want in any system (hopefully not in production server  ) after taking complete back-up of the server.

5. If you are in any group companies then you can benchmark the SAP processes carried out in various companies and take out the best one suitable for your organisation , which enables us to analyse and coagulate the SCENARIO - REQUIREMENT - PRACTICE to be followed.

6. Handle internal audits respective to your module and try to sort out all the highlighted issues based on the suggested solution. It enlighten the complete the A to Z life cycle resists in the project/department/organisation.

Request to our SCN Gurus to suggest some more steps which can carried out to be an successful SAP pro.

Regards,

Nilutpal.

Is anyone missing 'items with no replies' filter in forums?

After over a year on New SCN I've realized that in Discussions there is no options to view questions with 0 replies. In SDN we had an option to see open questions (which still exists) but also questions with no replies.

I used this option once in a while to check for the questions that went unanswered for more than a few days. Sometimes I see a question on which I might have some knowledge, but not really enough to respond. However, if later I see it still sitting unanswered, I would go ahead and reply with as little as I know. I'm hoping it was helpful to the posters or at the least showed that someone cared.

I'd be willing to submit on Idea Place to get this option back, but am not sure anyone else really cares for it. Please post your suggestions.

Thank you.

Purpose

This blog is a continuation of a series of blogs under the heading of Sharing Knowledge Is Not That Hard. The wiki discusses SCN Discussions, which are one of the many tools available to us for sharing knowledge..

Overview

SCN Discussions can be thought of as equivalent to the forums SAP used to have on the SDN platform. Each Space on the new Jive 5 SCN platform allows for discussions to occur between customers and SAP Moderators.

SCN Discussions - How to

A short description of the purpose for a Discussion is provided by Jason Lax in the Jive Document The Difference Between a Discussion, Blog Post, Document and Wiki. Jive Discussions can be thought of as being equivalent to forum threads. Use a discussion to ask a question, ask for suggestions or report a problem.  Replies can be marked as helpful or correct.

Before engaging on the SCN Discussions, read the SCN Rules of Engagement. These define the best practices, behaviors and more in order to retain professional look and feel to the SCN Spaces. In a nut shell; be nice, be helpful. To help you get started, see the Blog Where do I ask my question? (Posting New Discussions). Also, see the blog What do I need to do to get the fastest issue resolution? And if you are interested in becoming an SCN Moderator see the SCN Discussions Moderator Top Guidelines for more details. Remember, you do not have to be an SAP employee to be a Moderator. As a Moderator you have more responsibilities, but you also have more power to keep the SCN Spaces clean and professional.  To find the Space you have expertise or interest in, consult the SCN Site Index. The Blog posted to the Primary Support Communities SCN Discussions - are they any use? is an excellent read and explains well the whys of SCN Discussions.

Why to SCN Discussions

  • No template
  • Free flow, but professional
  • Great source of easy KBAs (see Best Ways to Share Knowledge – KBAs)
  • It’s easier, more efficient  and more direct  to provide basic information and troubleshooting steps in a Discussion than over the phone
  • Case deflection - By responding to one customer’s question, the answer is exposed to tens, hundreds, sometimes thousands of others looking for the same information
  • Highly Collaborative
