New Idea Platform and Refreshed Process Invites Your Innovation Ideas

SAP has re-launched its Idea Place with new capabilities, including greater transparency for users, voting and gamification, support for mobile, and other features. Today, Idea Place is where customers openly share their ideas with SAP for product enhancements, receive feedback from product management, and enable SAP to execute on its grand vision to become a leading social business.

Recently, SAP Idea Place surpassed a total of 600 crowdsourced ideas implemented or in development for imminent release within SAP products.

As SAP's Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Jonathan Becher said recently in Target Marketing Magazine:

"We've made a big bet on social at SAP. We infuse social in everything we do... I'd go so far as saying the 'S' in SAP now stands for social."

The vision of SAP Idea Place– which is part of the vibrant, global SAP Community Network (SCN) – is to provide disruptive innovation through breakthrough ideas, while connecting with audiences that SAP had not reached before.

And in the 2+ years since the initial pilot, Idea Place has generated:

• 8,700+ Submitted Ideas
• 9,000+ Comments
• 53,000+ Votes
• 380+ Delivered Features
• 260+ Ideas in Development & Testing 

How Idea Place Works

Idea Place hosts innovation campaigns called “Idea Sessions” which are typically based on a topic or a question posed to the community. Through social tools, SCN members can connect with the idea submitters and begin to develop those ideas. The ideas can be further refined, voted on, and prioritized.

Then, the product management team analyzes the ideas, with ranking provided by the number of votes and strategic fit (alignment with product direction, feasibility, and business benefit).

The ideas are evaluated and (if approved) implemented into a future product release. Whether an idea is ultimately approved or not, the appropriate SAP product team must update the status of each idea, so the submitter knows where his/her idea stands in the review cycle.

What’s New in Idea Place?

As of January of this year, SCN made some key improvements to the process and functionality of the platform.

• Transparency:  Each “Idea Session” now requires product managers to share their internal ideation management process, including insights into the review and implementation cycles.
• Increasing Quality:  SAP provides education on how to build quality idea submissions, accompanied by early-stage feedback from product managers.
• Voting and Gamification: Voting is transparent, meaning anyone can see every person who voted up or down an idea. Also, leaderboards show top contributors by session.
• Mobile: A mobile experience is being developed for easy on-the-go access.

The Benefits of Crowdsourcing Ideas

Before Idea Place, most customers had to go through tedious manual methods to submit product suggestions. This process was inflexible, not scalable, and provided little transparency to the customer who submitted original suggestions.

Idea Place now gives customers their own online suggestion platform, a voice, and a process for being heard. In fact, SAP doesn’t list a product on the site unless the corresponding product management team agrees to monitor, evaluate, and respond to ideas.

Moreover, other customers can comment on, add to, or vote on ideas to give additional weight to higher quality submissions. Throughout the process, product teams give status updates and explanations to ensure transparency.

SAP partners can benefit, too. For example, through an Idea Session called Suggest Mobile Apps users can request new mobile apps they would like to see running on SAP. By keeping the requests open, other customers can support these ideas, thereby increasing the demand.

If a significant amount of demand is shown for an app, an SAP partner can begin working with the customers to build the solution – with or without SAP. This enables the ecosystem to scale while SAP plays a more supportive, enabling role. Currently, there are 400 ideas in the Suggest Mobile Apps idea session alone!

For SAP product managers, Idea Place provides a scalable way to co-innovate with customers and partners. Traditional product feedback has relied solely on user groups or costly one-to-one interactions. These traditional approaches are still beneficial but do not scale to large audiences, nor do they support shorter implementation cycles.

Idea Place allows SAP to capture customer needs in a transparent, quantitative way– not just from IT and admins who install and run SAP, but also from everyday users of SAP products. And by supporting shorter implementation cycles, features can be added in weeks rather than months or years.

To illustrate the degree to which SAP has adopted this crowdsourcing model, our BusinessObjects teams now use Idea Place as the primary feedback channel across their entire suite of 40 products. They have already implemented 136 ideas in their BI 4.x Suite with 123 more coming in the next release.

The “Social” in SAP is Here to Stay

Organizations today recognize that “social” is no longer an option. It is a requirement.

Companies must adopt social technologies, tools, behaviors and practices to be competitive. Customers today also have higher expectations and more channels in which to voice their opinions. They want not only to be heard, but also to see their feedback acted upon with transparency from vendors.

We at SAP are excited by this new reality and see a wonderful opportunity. We have an obsession with both customer success and product innovation. This mindset also drives our approach to “socializing” other functions within SAP (e.g., marketing, customer support, IT, and HR) as we round into a complete social business.

Just recently Jim Spath and Thorsten Franz were ribbing me on Twitter and Facebook (making fun of me or teasing me) about a blog I wrote quite a few years ago called:  Why Don't They Let Me Blog .  (Jim actually wrote an excellent blog five years later on the same topic called: Bloggers: "Write Frankly And Fearlessly, But ..."

I re-read my blog post and was rather appalled at how it was written back then. Why?  It sounded like I was blaming suggesting that users weren’t taking the time or effort to properly submit their blog applications and were spamming the moderation queue with requests to blog when they really hadn’t a clue about what blogging meant or what they wanted to write about.  It sounded like I was somewhat complaining about those same users wasting the valuable time of the moderators. 

While my early blog might have had a few valid points, I don’t think it showed much empathy or compassion for people who were attempting (and not fully succeeding) to use a blog tool we offered on our platform.  The blog premise ignored the challenges that some faced in understanding how to blog and additional issues they had in using the rather clumsy mechanisms for blogging in place at the time. 

We have all come a long way since then, both in our understanding of blogging and community and the ease of creating a blog on SCN, and yet I find myself re-visiting my own lack of patience with users and seeing (again) how confusion over how to post a query or discussion might now lead to people inadvertently blogging something when all they wanted to do was to ask a question. And no, I have no intention of shaking my finger at them again and writing a new post called: "Why Don't They Let Me Post a Discussion Question?".

Jeanne Carboni  wrote a thoughtful blog two years ago called: Be Careful How You Post to help clarify the "how" to post and I recall (with some amusement) how Johan Hakkesteegt responded in comments and with irony about "those pesky users" to Laure Cetin who suggested finding some "missions" for folks to complete to help in their understanding of how to use the platform better.  When Laure launches the gamification platform we will indeed have some wonderful opportunities for training and behavior guiding.

All of us seem to be focused on the same good end result of having folks understand how and where to post.  There continue to be many efforts around improving navigation, improving the labeling of actions, creating tutorials, training users and moderators.  You can find a plethora (large number) of contents by searching for "How to Blog on SCN" (This link does a search for blogs on this topic in the space About SCN ) and you could do the same thing for "How to Ask a Question".

So yes, there is plenty of documentation out there, but obviously having the documentation on the website doesn't fully prevent the confusion.

Instead of making the "failure to post correctly" the community's failure, I'd like to explore why we might have a gap in understanding of how you, the user, is thinking, posting, and using the platform.  I'm thinking aloud how we, with your cooperation, can improve our understanding of how you, the new users especially, think and behave on SCN.

Many folks receive a Direct Message (DM) from me and other moderators explaining how their content has been flagged for moderation as a question not a blog and how we request that they repost their questions as discussions rather than as blog post.  Some of us have jokingly called this problem the "Notablog" post and our leadership has taken a real interest in seeing this issue addressed.

It dawns on me we should be directly asking the folks who post incorrectly, why they did so and rather than blaming them work with them to address the issue.

Dear Community, if you come across someone making that error please point them to this blog so that they can guide us better and we can understand:

1. Where they were doing the posting from (ie the homepage create content drop down, the action box on right side of the screen on topic pages, the content tab in a space and the left side action box)
2. Which of those 3 methods for creating a post did they use? (Create, Action Box on Page, Action Box on Content)
3. What did they suppose they were doing when they posted a blog? (did they understand the word blog, the word discussion)
4. How they might have avoided the mistake (what could we have done to help them understand better, what visuals might help)

I'm going to add to my future messaging of users while moderating an invitation to speak to us, the team and for us to gather more intelligence around how we can prevent these posting failures and how we can learn from our users without blaming and shaming them.

This document will get updated on a regular base to reflect the latest bug fixes and feature enhancements that have been provided to the SCN platform. Please be aware that it will not contain all the work done during the implementation time of a release but mostly bugs and features visible or important to our community.

Dear Moderator,

I'm getting an error like the below screenshot everytime when I try to post any discussion in the ABAP development space. Kindly look into this. This has been happening for past few days.

In December 2012 I made my first visit to India. As you can read in my blogs, My First Innojam Experience and SAP TechEd Bangalore 2012,  I had an awesome time, got see a lot of beautiful places and tasted incredible food:). But the thing that was most valuable for me was to interact with the Indian SCN community members. While I was manning the SCN TecheEd booth with Marilyn Pratt and Leon LimsonI got to meet a lot of enthusiastic community members. One of them was Venu Puthussery from Capgemini India. He showed interest in the new SCN platform and in engaging more of his team members to SCN. We agreed that after TechEd I would contact him and that we would record a training together that would be distributed to 1200+ Capgemini consultants.

It was both exciting and a bit scary to prepare an SCN introduction webinar for such a large group of people. But Venu and Pavithra Balasubramanian's feedback before the session helped me a lot in creating the agenda and a list of features I wanted to show to meet their needs. I was a bit nervous before the recording started on Wednesday but as soon as I started talking about SCN I felt at home and I had a great time. I of course didn't forget to talk about Blog It Forward.

The timing we chose to conduct this online SCN training is very interesting. SCN is in a pre-gamification period and the SCN pre-moderation feature was turned on due to spam attack. That meant that the content of contributors didn't gain more than 30 points and was moderated before it was published. In a way, it was almost the same as in our old SCN, where new members were moderated prior to being published bloggers.

Hi! I have p-user to access SCN, but don't have an s-user. How can I get certificate to access SCN ?

Hi Team,

I have joined SCN newly and after couple of SCN blog posts I received a mail stating "You just started scoring points by contributing on the SAP Community Network ". But later on I have discovered the reputation tab is not showing.

Can anyone kindly guide me or tell me why such happened. How to contact administrator for that.

Especially since Laure is usually the interviewer in her wonderful Member of the Month series. Please learn more as we go behind the scenes with Laure.

You've lived in 4 countries and multiple cities, how has that influenced you? It opens up a lot of horizons, you meet a lot of people with various backgrounds. Of course, it is interesting to see the cultural differences and the first year or two is all about learning and adjusting, but once you settle in you find out if you can stay or not. Right now I'm feeling great in California, I couldn't go back to France to work there! Now that I have a son here in the US I wonder how he will grow up, and I hope he won't feel torn between two cultures. I also wonder how American he will be when he grows up LOL.

Please share a bit about your title, group? I work in the SCN Collaboration Team, we are a group whose responsibility it is to nurture the community spirit, help members connect with each other and encourage them to contribute quality content. My focus is member reputation, and yes it includes the SCN point system

What do your daily responsibilities entail? I am the go-to person when it comes to the point system, its design and any questions that the community may have. I am unfortunately the person that moderators reach out to when action needs to be taken, and usually it's when it becomes ugly with the points! But in general on a daily basis I respond to feedback about points and other reputation mechanisms, and often the community responds for me, which I always find awesome. These past few months my job has been less "its usual self": I am working to implement a gamification platform very soon on SCN and the missions and badges that will be introduced will hopefully steer people away from points a little bit, and have them focus instead on what they need to do to be successful on SCN. And beyond that I would like to find new ways this year to have members shine on SCN, and also outside the community.

Could you share some of the background work you did to prepare for the gamification project? Gamification is a very interesting topic, because beyond encouraging behaviors with rewards it's about knowing your community and touching all the various personalities you can have in a community. I took the time to list most of these personalities and get to know them better by talking with my team and with community members. Since I've been in the team for three years now I have received a lot of feedback and I remember most of it. If you want to design a robust system that encourages quality you have to design missions carefully and that's what's been most interesting. And challenging: It can become complex very quickly and as usual you don't have all the tools you'd like to do everything you want. One thing that surprised me is how I managed to take different roles as the project manager and as the community member. Sometimes I had to take decisions that were the right ones for the project, but I know my community manager self would have decided differently. That was difficult. The opposite also happened: I think of the benefits to the community in all the things I do for the project.

Favorite SCN space or feature and why? I like the Moderators and Space Editors space (it's restricted access), because I learn a lot there by reading about what our moderators do every day. I love the Coffee Corner as well, I read some funny jokes many times, and I love how it helps us connect with each other in a more personal way. I am always surprised at how deep conversations can become there. Right now we've made the Coffee Corner read-only during a transition period between the old and new point system, just to discuss with the Moderators what is the best approach to take with the Coffee Corner, but once it's "back" I'll start a thread about jazz. I know a couple of jazz fans such as Thorsten Franz, Thomas Zloch and Gail Moody-Byrd-Byrd, but I'd like to know who else likes jazz music and what they listen to. Who knows what artist I may discover!

What would the community be surprised to learn about you? I don't know if I can answer that question, you should ask someone else who knows me! Maybe I can tell you that I love singing in the car, when I'm by myself of course! So if you see me in my car one day, I'm not on the phone… I'm just singing my heart out and rocking the car LOL.

Please help us grow from your personal experience; share one tip/resource/guide/experience that you recommend after finding it helpful from personal experience. It may sound common, but: Live life fully. It's not that it's short, it's long enough that we can live up to 80 or 90. It's just that it goes so fast! I know it sounds repetitive, but years slip by and everything goes so fast these days that you can lose the perspective of what really matters: family and friends. Don't take them for granted.

What profession other than yours would you love to attempt: I'd like to have my own business one day, not in the high-tech industry... Once I'm ready to start it you will hear about it, it's not going to be any time soon though.

Laure wrote a fabulous Blog it Forward post and in it she shared a picture of her monoski and said there was a story behind it. I asked if she would be willing to share. I love my monoski. It is a wedding present from my brother, if you can believe it. It reminds me of our good times together when we were kids, skiing and trying all types of things: monoski, snowblades, big foot. We never tried snowboard because we thought snowboarders were so lame (sorry, no offense). Unfortunately he passed away last year and I miss him terribly. We had a lot of fun together and he never cared about material things or how they look like (He would go to a wedding wearing jeans! But for my wedding he wore curdory pants). He found the monoski hilarious because of the 80s design, we cracked up when he gave it to me.
  
From the MOM series we all know you're a strong MAC fan, when did this love affair start and what is your favorite feature? Oh boy… My husband is a Mac fan and he converted me We now only have Mac at home, and I adjusted to Mac naturally and enjoyed it. It took me a while to switch from Blackberry to iPhone though. I still hate typing on the iPhone, but it's such a great product overall! I told this story to Steve Rumsby recently: I made a video of my son a few months ago and of course it was too big to send it to my family. Inside the email I was able to edit the video, shorten it and change the start time several times until it was OK and I was ready to send. It was such a smooth experience! I am often amazed how much they think through things when they develop them, the user experience is uplifting. I love the iPod as well, I have my whole music library on it: from lullabies to classical to jazz and world to hip-hop. Enough to keep me company on a trip across the US!
