Reputation Program Overview

$
0
0

SAP Community Network (SCN) is a dynamic and diverse community with over 2 million members. Being part of this vibrant, passionate community is like being part of a family. As you become active on SCN, you will grow your knowledge, build an expert reputation and make friends.

Regular participation is important for getting the most out of your engagement within the community. Not only do you receive ongoing feedback and interactive discussions to exchange ideas, being active on SCN is a rewarding experience. To support the experience, we have established a reputation program to measure your activity, thank you for your contributions and recognize you with visibility in the community.

Build your Reputation as an SAP Professional:

NewSCNJoin.png

Points and Status:

Points are awarded to you when you contribute, and you receive additional points when community members recognize the value of your contributions by liking, rating (5 stars), sharing etc.  The space where you contribute determines the point category. If you regularly contribute, you will increase your chances of being highlighted in the “Top Participants” widget of your space (based on the points in the last 12 months). Note that you are able to contribute in your “Personal Space” as well, but that area does not receive points, and will not show up in search for a specific space topic.

Points are assigned for discussion messages, blog posts, documents (articles, white papers, eLearnings etc) and wiki contributions. More detailed information can be found in the SCN Reputation Program FAQ.

Once you’ve become a member of SCN, you start accumulating lifetime points. These never expire.

Active Contributors are SCN members who have reached at least 250 points within the last 12 months. As an Active Contributor your level of contribution is highlighted to others with badges assigned to your name:

topcontr_16x16_bronze.gifActive Contributor Bronze: 250-499 points
topcontr_16x16_silver.gifActive Contributor Silver: 500-1,499 points
topcontr_16x16_gold.gifActive Contributor Gold: 1,500-2,499 points
topcontr_16x16_platinum.gifActive Contributor Platinum: 2,500 points and above

Any time you reach a new threshold of Active Contributor, you receive an Acknowledgment of Achievement via email. In order to keep a badge, you need steady contribution.  Remember that badges are assigned based upon the 12-month rolling point mechanism – not on lifetime points.

Increased visibility

It is important to have visibility in the community. Whether you are an SAP Customer, Partner or Employee, you should take advantage of the opportunity to build your reputation within the community. Becoming an expert has its benefits. Topic Leaders (top three contributors in a point category) are recognized on stage at the annual SAP TechEds and the biggest contributors, known by their actions, expertise and helpfulness are sponsored as SAP Mentors, receiving free admission to SAP TechEd, and most importantly, mentor shirts.

How can you increase your visibility? The first step is to maintain your user profile. The SCN user profile has been greatly improved, use it extensively so that it becomes your window to the community! Your user profile will provide other members valuable information about yourself, your content, the people and places you follow, and the reputation tab will be the place where you shine: badges, recent contribution points, top communities (based on lifetime points).

As you contribute to spaces in SCN, you accrue points in that space’s category. The more quality content you contribute , the more you will be regarded as an expert in that category. And if you are among the top 5 contributors of your space, you will be listed as such on the space overview page.

So make the most of your engagement with others in SCN. In addition to getting answers from other experts, give back by contributing high quality / high quality to the rest of the Community. The SCN platform is social and you will be recognized for your actions. The best  content is prominently featured on the site, you may be recognized formally as the  “Member of the Month”, or your peers may nominate you to become an SAP Mentor. Additionally, SCN Moderators are always on the lookout for subject matter experts with community spirit to join their ranks. Display those characteristics and you too may be nominated for the role!

We continue to explore in order to encourage contribution through interesting programs, rewards and recognition. One big project for the SCN Team is gamification. SCN will use extensive game mechanics to encourage the right behaviors, allow members to know where they stand and what they have to do to get rewards, accrue their visibility and grow reputation in the community.

Stay tuned for more information later this year!

Hello Community Members,

Recently, you may have received an email asking you to update your SCN information and accept our Privacy and Web Tracking Policy. Or you may have logged in to SCN, and gotten this pop up:

Update.jpg

It asks you to update some of your profile information and confirm acceptance of the terms of use. If you encounter it, please follow the instructions and provide the updates. Once you do it, you should not receive additional emails asking you to take action.

This is all part of a project called "Get Back", being led by Gail Moody-Byrd , which we are running to provide more accurate member information, as well as make your user experience better. We realize that there are dormant accounts in the system that make it difficult for you to find people you are looking for.  We want to clean these up.  We also want to be able to provide accurate information about the number of members and their level of engagement with the Community., because it's the best way for us to be able to understand Community behavior and address improvements to make member experiences more positive.

Project Get Back will help.  Here are the project goals:

  • Active Members - Get up-to-date information in their profiles and ask them to approve the latest terms of use.
  • Dormant and Pre-2006 Members - Reach out to these members to determine if they will ever be active (again). Determine if they are candidates for data clean up.
  • Service Marketplace ("S users", who may not realize they have access to SCN) - Raise their awareness and invite them to join the Community.  Determine whether or not they should be part of the data clean up.
  • SAP Employees / New Employees - Raise this group's awareness of SCN and how they can participate in the Community / social media to build a strong online reputation.

Here are some specific activities we're taking to achieve these goals:

  • Technology - We realize that there are technical issues that make it difficult to log in and stay logged in to SCN.  We are working with SAP IT to provide automatic sign in, remember me, and social sign in with twitter and Facebook.  See Oliver Kohl's blog about the automatic sign in status, which emphasizes the impact the technical improvements will have. IT continues to work on the performance issues, and we hope to be able to re-launch auto sign in soon.  Additionally, Social sign in should be available in late Q1 / early Q2.
  • Process Improvement - We are refining the registration process to improve user experience and simplicity. We are also working with SAP IT to make the "reset password" process more consistent. (e.g. some email systems corrupt links to password reset pages.)
  • Communications - We are reaching out through the Community, emails, newsletters, and event to encourage returns to the the Community. Despite substantial increases in the number of unique visitors, we have seen significant decrease in the number of visitors who log in. As we make progress on technical improvements related to registration/log in, and add more functionality for reputation & points, we want to make sure that everyone knows about it.
  • Training - Provide training materials and sessions to those who don't register or log in to SCN.  This training would go to S-users who are unaware of SCN, people who access SCN through search as a "grab and go" service, and those who simply don't know anything about SCN.
  • Gamification - You can read about this project in Chip Rodgers' blog. Laure Cetin  is managing the project for a launch in early April 2013, with missions, badges and points that can help members engage meaningfully, while improving the quality of content and helping people build strong online reputations. More communications and training about the Gamification project will be provided in advance of launch.

I'm sure many of you are wondering what you can do if you have 2 or more accounts on SCN, each with content and points. There are cases in SCN where people have changed jobs/companies and created new SCN accounts to reflect the new email, and we understand why you would want to combine the accounts to keep all of your content and reputation in one account. Unfortunately there is no automated way to do it at this time. Although a couple of manual merges were done earlier the process is not scalable and we cannot offer it as a Community-wide solution. We have opened a ticket for Jive, but they have not yet committed to deliver the capability. We continue to push for this, as well as explore options to customize a solution ourselves. None of the duplicate accounts will be disabled because we know that you want to eventually merge them.

Look for further updates to this project in the About SCN space.  I encourage you to comment and ask questions.  I'll address them as much as possible.

And please remember to click through the email you receive and log in to update your information.  Thank you!

Talking about gamification

rosettered.png

One of my buddies and fellow SAP Mentor Ethan Jewett wrote a thought-provoking piece about a topic currently seeing a lot of hype (especially here on SCN): gamification. For a change - I mostly agree with Ethan that points, badges or achievements are not the silver bullet to keep people engaged or motivated. At least not in the long run!

I had my share of gaming (been slacking lately) and I spent more time playing on my Xbox the last couple of years than I would like to admit. My favorite game types areRPGs and sim-racing titles.

From my personal experience I can confirm that good storytelling and creative game-design is what keeps me engaged. One of my all-time favorites is Mass Effect: brilliant story and a great interaction design. What really makes the game special though is that it remembers the decisions you make throughout the game and there are multiple story lines, so no pre-determined path to trot down - but 'find your own'.

Another game that kept me up late at night has been the Forza Motorsport series. I spend a little fortune on hardware (wheel, club-sport metal pedals, ...) and it got really competitive at some point. I even ended up co-founding a racing team with players from all over the world. We participated in competitions and started to take over the leaderboards just to get our team handle on there. As Ethan said, you can really make friends that way! What fascinated me about Forza was the depth of the game, the complex game physic, which made you actually feel the car (especially once you got a buttkicker!)

But I'm getting carried away here... back on the topic: gamification.

The thing that separates great games from the rest of the pack is just the right level of difficulty. I want to be challenged - not bored! The right level of difficulty results in the fact that people feel they have accomplished something. Take sim-racing for example... boy, I sure spend hours on a particular track with a particular car just to get the perfect lap. I mean, not the #1 time or whatever, but my own personal perfect lap. It felt like Zen... you repeat something over and over again, just to make it (as) perfect (as you can.) It sure was a dang good feeling once you hit that lap and got your name (and your team's name) in the top 100 for everyone to see... Was that the motivating factor for me to spend all that time - to make it to the leaderboards? Sure not, but it added to it and it was a good feeling getting KUDOS from the rest of the squad (and the respect of the other players.)

So, no... you don't play games for these achievements (well, some do!), but if done properly they add in keeping one motivated. Just like work... I mean none of us works for the respect of our managers or peers, but out of intrinsic motivation (if not, find another job!). Yet, it sure is nice to get a 'well done' email once in a while.

Points, badges, awards, achievements (or any kind of perks for that matter) only add to the experience, but they won't be sufficient to make you keep your long term motivation or engagement. Yet, sometimes they can be the trigger to make you try one more time or just a little harder.

See at Forza for example there are several categories of car classes and plenty of tracks. There are leaderboards for every possible combination and even roll-ups (e.g. all tracks for a particular car class.) Now, I surely 'invested' some time to pull off a somewhat decent lap in some of my less favorite tracks/car classes just for the sake of a good overall time. If there would not have been an overall leaderboard I may would not have bothered (and would have never mastered some of these tracks.)

Same with other games: if I was only missing one or two badges I completed the related missions, just so that I got a perfect score and I sure would have missed out on some great story plots if I would not have done so. Consequently I believe that gamification of the enterprise does work - to some degree. If you do not like your job, no gamification system in the world can motivate you (for long!) Yet, if done right (and in a clever way) it may just be the motivation one needs to go the extra mile.

Let's take SCN for example: I do know of people who just wrote that extra blog to get 'Active Member' status. If there would not be such a status, they may would not have written that extra blog post (at that specific time.) To sum it up, gamification can work in the enterprise as it helps to encourage certain (wanted) behavior.

Example: assume we would have a 'good citizen' badge on SCN, which people would get for marking correct answers on questions they raised. I'm sure we would see more questions being marked as 'answered'. Now... would there be people gaming the system by posting questions so that they (or their buddies) can mark them as answered. Sure, there would. (All I can say to such people is "Common, get a life, folks!")

However, in total I think it would benefit the community as people would be more willing to answer questions raised by 'good citizens'. Add a 'help a newbie' badge to make sure that new people have a chance to get their questions answered as well. [Insert your own badge ideas here!]

So - will gamification help us to get all the people contributing to SCN? Probably not! But it may help to make the whole experience more pleasant for everyone by encouraging certain behavior that is in the best interest for the community as a whole.

PS: Oh, and that 'Journey' game sure looks interesting

Hi All,

Suddenly I can see that all posts are being submitted to moderator before being published.

Is this rule applicable  for all SCN users or only me? May I know the reason behind this change in SCN?

How will this benefit SCN?

Steve Rumsby - SCN Member of the Month March 2013

Steve Rumsby.jspa.png

This month I took a  break from my gamification project to do something I really enjoy: interview the SCN Member of the Month. Each time I discover a new personality, learn things about a technology, a certain use of SCN, or a new wisdom.

This month is no different: Steve Rumsby, our Member of the Month for March 2013 is a wise owl if I may say. We spent some time talking about quality of life, project management, community heroes, taking things slowly and mobile devices. In no order of importance ;-)

Steve, can you tell us a bit about yourself, where you live, who you work for, and other things you would like to share with the community (hobbies, fun facts)?

I live in Coventry, a city of about 300,000 people in the centre of the UK. My house is only about 2 miles from my office, so I commute by foot most days. I love being able to do that. I work at the University of Warwick, and always have. In fact, I was an undergraduate student here before that, studying Computer Science. I’ve been here since I was 18.

I was introduced to SAP in 1998 when I joined the team during our initial implementation. I started in a Basis role and have spread from there and now get involved in many aspects of the operation of our SAP systems.

Outside of work I have two current hobbies. Photography has been a long time interest of mine, and astronomy is a fairly recent one. I would love to combine them, but doing astrophotography properly can get very expensive. Finding time for hobbies can by difficult, though, when you’ve got a wife, two kids, a cat and a dog all wanting your time also! No, I love my family really

You’ve worked for the same university your whole career, and that’s also where you graduated. This is pretty rare in today’s world where everyone gets to work with at least more than one employer. And here in the US, it is sometimes expected that people in big companies change jobs every three years. Can you tell us about your experience, being with the University of Warwick for several decades?

Although I’ve worked at the same place for all these years, I haven’t always had the same job. One nice thing about a university is that there’s a lot of diversity, so even the same job in a different department will bring new challenges. I even had a Project Manager hat for a while but I didn’t like it as much as being a Technical Manager. When you are a project manager you have to make certain decisions that are good for the project, but not specifically the ones you would take in another role.

The key thing for me is that I’ve always been able to learn new stuff. Even now, after having worked in the SAP world for almost 15 years, there’s always new stuff. SAP, and technology in general, isn’t standing still. That’s exciting.

Are you active in the SAP University Alliances Community?

No, unfortunately. It would be nice to have more SAP involvement in the academic activities at Warwick, especially since we have lots of direct practical experience, but so far that hasn’t happened. This is on my list to pursue further.

Note from Laure: I’m pretty sure that Steve could easily find someone from the University Alliances Community (UAC) to chat with him and see what they could do together. It is true that it can be a rich experience to enroll fresh talent in any SAP project. Myself I “found” Sean Yang who is doing an awesome job on my gamification project, as an intern. He was recommended to me via someone who knows someone who knows someone who is active in the UAC.

When did you become a member of SCN and what brought you to this community?

I joined SDN, as it was then, in October 2003. That’s so long ago that I forget what prompted me to join! I do know it was a long time before I started contributing, so I imagine it was just to get help with a problem I was having. At the time we were working through our first ever SAP upgrade, R/3 4.0B to 4.7. I imagine it was related to that.

How does SCN help you in your daily activities?

SCN still provides a great source of help, both through being able to ask questions and get answers but also from the accumulated answers of years gone by. Just a couple of weeks ago I found a partial solution in a discussion posting from about 4 years ago to a problem I was having right now.

More than that, reading the content on SCN is a great way to keep your knowledge up to date. I make it a habit to log in every morning when I get to work and see what’s going on. I also use the blogs’ RSS feeds and can therefore see what is posted throughout the day.

How do you find the time to contribute to SCN? I see you also have a personal blog, and you have your day-time job, are there “productivity secrets” you can share with us?

I find blogging about something, whether on SCN or elsewhere, provides a great incentive to make sure you understand it well first! It’s always time well spent to go through a certain thought process before publishing a blog. Creating a draft, going through it and then publish the blog is part of my continuing education process. You can’t understand something properly until you can explain it well. In the case of SCN, keeping my knowledge of SAP current is an important part of my job, and contributing to SCN helps with that.

What is interesting is that sometimes certain topics don’t resonate with the community when you were thinking there would be a lot of feedback on something you find interesting.

What do you like most about the community in general?

The people. There is a great, well, community on SCN. Friendly, helpful, welcoming people. People I’ve never met and yet I think I could genuinely call friends. I was fortunate enough to get to TechEd Madrid in 2011 (it was not the first time though) and meet a few of these people for the first time, although I knew them well from Twitter and SCN: Thorsten Franz, Tom Cenens, Jon Reed, Martin English, Oliver Kohl, Martin Gillet, Tim Guest and Uwe Fetzer. I had briefly met Michael Koch before, but we travelled to Madrid together – he lives not far from me.

Maybe one day I’ll get to TechEd Las Vegas and meet a bunch more? I hope so. Jim Spath, Susan Keohan, David Hull are definitely on the list. And you if you are there!

I feel like I've left out a few people. Sorry to anyone who thinks they should be on the list:-)

Note from Laure: anyone who would like to meet Steve in person, please add a comment to this blog!

Steve and I also talked about SAP Inside Tracks and the great opportunity they give to meet at a local level when you/your company can’t afford a TechEd trip. If you don’t have an Inside Track coming up in your area you should organize one!

What technology recently had you most enthusiastic about?

I play with lots of new technology. Most of it is clever, useful, maybe even fun. Very few devices get me really excited, though. Until recently, I’d not come across an exciting gadget since I got my iPhone 3G over 4 years ago. But Google’s new Nexus devices changed that. I’ve got a Nexus 7 tablet and a Nexus 4 phone and they are both great devices that I really enjoy using. Android devices have finally caught up with iOS. Nothing could compare to that until these Nexus devices came out. They are so much less expensive! I appreciate companies that make technology more accessible to everyone.

In an exchange of emails you told me that you’ve been using emails since the 1980s and you’re still writing the “old school way” with quotes from the person who sent you the email and then below your answer. I have to ask you: how were the old days, the 80s? I’m too young to remember ;-)

In general, technology was bigger, more expensive and less capable back then. The first computer I looked after here at Warwick (a VAX 11/750 for the nerds in the audience) had just 1MB of RAM and 380MB of disk storage, and cost about £80,000.

And can you believe mobile phones only made calls and sent SMS messages? Those things are way down the list of things I do with my phone today!

But the 80s were no less exciting. Many of the technologies we take for granted today were bleeding edge not so long ago, and I got to play with a lot of them back then.

Email was about the same thing as it is today, except that it could take two to three days for an email to reach its recipient! And today of course email comes with multimedia. As you explain, I like to reply to an email in a conversation style. I find it’s too bad that Microsoft Outlook came in with a reply at the top of the original email, it loses the interaction that all emails should generate.

If a new member came to you and asked for your advice on how to be an active and respected member of SCN, what would you say?

Start slowly. Follow a few spaces in which you have some expertise. Find some people who seem to do things right and follow them. The community is very diverse, with people from around the world, and everyone has a different way to interact with their peers and use the content available on SCN. Watch how things are done, just for a little while. Then jump into a discussion or two, and grow from there. Your first blog can be a bit scary. Take your time over it. Maybe ask somebody to read it through before you publish it.

Is there an SCN member you admire (OK… you can name a few)?

I currently follow 57 people on SCN, and I could name them all. I’m going to name just two, but I love you all really! Both are people who can see through hype and aren’t afraid to speak their mind. In this rapidly changing world of technology where many shiny new things come but very few stay around for long, that’s important. My two are Jim Spath and Thorsten Franz.

Easy question: Mac or Windows?

Depends on who is buying! My work machine is a Mac and I do like it more than the Windows machines I’ve used, but not enough to pay the Apple premium myself. With my own money I’d buy a Windows machine.

Since you’re a photographer I have to ask you another easy question: Nikon or Canon? ;-)

Sony! But since Nikon use Sony sensors you could call that a vote for Nikon...

Are you on Twitter?

I’ve been on Twitter for a little over 5 years now and you can find me here. I posted my 30,000th tweet just yesterday, in fact! I love twitter as a way of interacting with people, and I love that many of those friendly, helpful, welcoming people on SCN are just as friendly, helpful and welcoming on Twitter. Twitter is obviously a more informal environment than SCN and that makes it easier to get to know people better, since you can talk about pretty much anything. I know Twitter isn’t for everyone, but if you like the people interactions on SCN and you aren’t on Twitter yet, I recommend you at least give it a go. For me, SCN and Twitter complement each other perfectly.

Spotlight – Kesavadas Thekkillath

$
0
0

I am happy to present Kesavadas Thekkillath as our newest spotlight! Kesavadas moderates the very busy ABAP Development space, especially their discussion forums which require daily attention.

He is currently working with SAP Global Delivery and sites it as the ‘most commendable period I ever had in my career’. Specifically he is working for an SAP IT project in BPC/BW/FICO domain developing applications in ABAP.

Kesavadas.jpg

Please share a bit about yourself with the community: I am currently located in Bengaluru, India but my native place is Kerala, the God’s own country (phrase used to promote tourism by the state government). Check this link to know why it’s named that way https://www.keralatourism.org/video-clips/.

*Gali: You can hear how proud Kesavadas is of his home state. He returns to visit his grandparents and is headed back this week. He especially recommends visiting Kerala in monsoon season (June-August) which surprised me but the rains are famous (this video shares why) and life continue even with rains

This is my seventh year in the SAP sphere specially ABAP. I currently work at Atos (formerly known as Atos Origin) and right now I am assigned in SAP Global Delivery for a long term project with SAP IT, as a partner consultant.

During my free time I play games, cook and watch movies.

*Gali: Kesavadas especially likes playstation which he’s been playing since he’s been a kid. He helped me out since my son has recently been asking for it but he advised waiting for PS4 (a reprieve!).

You have a unique name, does it have a special meaning? My name certainly has a special meaning, it is worshipper of Lord Krishna and my friends and family call me “Keshu”.

You formerly went by a different name though in the community, right? Yes when I first joined SDN (in 2007) I thought my name would be too hard to pronounce and so went under Keshav. T. However when we moved to the new SCN I decided to change to my original name.

*Gali: Many people know Kesavadas under the name Keshav. T as he achieved topic leader status by helping many in both 2010 and 2011!

How do you get to know newbies? In the space we interact, there are different types of newbies. A skilled member joins to provide quality ideas and is selective. Another member joints to dump the requirements, they considering the forum a free consulting service; are lazy to research, press f1 and examine the forums etc. Some of them listen very well to moderator messages and try to correct their mistakes, but some don’t care about reading rules of engagement (I have less patience with them). There are some newbies who join to gather points; they give good suggestions but are not selective and answer basic questions. We direct them in the right way.

What motivates you? Doing my part, especially helping without conditions, satisfaction after completing a tough task, giving back to the community and a well said thank you.

*Gali: In addition, Kesavadas shared that Vijay Dudla and  Rich Heilman motivated him when he first joined SDN. He thought that he too could be like them someday. Rob Burbank was also instrumental as one day he mailed him and helped guide him on proper behavior. Kesavadas notes that as a turning point. Since then he always behaved ‘cleanly’ and helped as much as possible which eventually led to Thomas Zloch recommended him as a moderator when Rob retired.

If you could offer one bit of advice to new members what would it be and why? I would recommend the new members to read the Rules of Engagement at least once. SCN discussion forums are not only for asking questions, it is a place where you can help others, build a professional relationship with other members and learn a lot.
Also, read Asking Good Questions in the SCN Discussion Spaces will help you get Good Answers.

Is there another moderator or community member that you've found incredibly helpful? Yes

Moderator – Thomas Zloch. We miss him; I hope he joins back soon.
Community members –  Vinod Kumar , Naimesh Patel , Marcin Pciak and Suhas Saha

They have sound knowledge and helped me and others unconditionally.

Please share something community members would be surprised to learn about you. Even when I am in tight schedule, I reserve some time for SCN after my work.

How has the SCN community helped you? If at all anybody knows me globally, it’s through SCN. SCN has also helped me to earn few good friends too.

How are you finding the new SCN? Initially I was finding it hard to understand where exactly is the space I have to navigate, but now it’s really easy, especially helpful was ‘getting started’ space. I think its more interesting now like any one of the social networking sites. There are lot of new features now.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Chef maybe

*Gali: Kesavadas cooks Indian food mainly and insists I try Hyderbad Biriyani (basmati rice with chicken/beef, and lots of spices which I surely will on my next visit!).

What profession would you not like to do? Politics

Is there a community story you wish to share? I did the sap certification provided by SCN. The voucher provided was not applicable in India. In fact there are some members even now who received the voucher and have not gone through with it. From my experience, each person I contacted in SCN has dedicatedly helped me a lot to sort out this issue and I completed it with ease.

Gali: On a personal note, it has been my honor and pleasure to feature Moderator and Space Editor spotlights in the past two years. I interact daily with this amazing group of community supporters and love being able to ‘share them’ back a bit with the community they help daily. As I am taking on new challenges, Moshe Naveh will be taking over. Be sure to check out previous spotlights in the Spotlight Showcase.
