Language Lost and Found. SCN and Me.

It was the last Sunday in March of this year and I settled down to my usual weekend morning routine:  My cat on my left side, a cup of coffee on my right, and the New York Times app open on my iPad.  I clicked on the first story that caught my interest and started reading.

Oddly, it didn’t quite register.  Though I read the full article, I seemed to miss the author’s key point.

So I read it again.  It was a Sunday, after all.  I had all the time in the world; the cat was purring, the coffee was hot.

Again, the key point of the article escaped me.  “That’s strange”, I thought.   Usually, articles in the New York Times are very well written and researched, so their themes are clear and transparent.

I read the piece again, and once more I didn’t understand.

Suddenly it hit me.  It wasn’t the article. It was me.I didn’t understand

I tried several other articles, with the same result – I could read the words, but was unable to grasp the meaning

Alarmed, I reviewed the other oddities that I had experienced that week.  Lights had been far too bright, sounds too loud.  I had been unusually fatigued.  Strangest of all, everything had seemed to smell uncharacteristically  bad.  At first I accused the neighbor’s cat of marking his territory too enthusiastically.  The cat theory weakened when I experienced the same smell at the mall, at a restaurant, and at the grocery store.

Now very concerned that something was wrong with my brain, I went to see my doctor the next day.

He asked one question as soon as I had explained my odd experiences:  “When you fell, did you hit your head?”

Indeed.  Just over a week earlier, on a Saturday morning, I had tripped on an uneven sidewalk. I was on my way to a friend’s house for brunch, flowers in my left hand, iPhone in my right, following the “little blue dot” on the map for directions.  I did not see the slight change in the height of the pavement, and as I catapulted through the air, a moment of hesitation – wanting to avoid  crushing the beautiful bouquet of flowers I was holding – meant that I  hit  the concrete full force with my chin rather than being able to use my hands to break the fall.  My nose was bloodied, my arm twisted and bruised, my pride wounded.  Shortly afterward, I had gone to the same doctor to have my arm put back into place, and had then promptly forgotten about the incident.

Luckily, the doctor had not forgotten.  He remembered the fall, and now he promptly diagnosed a concussion.

Shrugging, completely unworried, he told me that the odd mental effects I had been experiencing were common after concussion – in fact, hallmarks of a post-concussion syndrome. He was very reassuring. “You’ll be fine.  Just rest.  No reading, no computer, no radio or TV.  Just rest.”

Feeling much better knowing that my strange experiences did not mean I was going crazy, and assuming I would be as good as new in a few days, I did as he suggested.  At first this was refreshing.  I’ve been a voracious reader since childhood, and I listen to news and stories on the radio for hours on end.  It was something of a “reset” to put those passions aside and pay attention to the world around me in a different and quieter way.  I took naps, watched the birds, and pondered the budding trees of Spring.

This new way of being quickly became isolating, however.  Throughout my life, I have been passionate about language.  I was frustrated with books at the age of seven, very irritated that they had pictures.  I didn’t want pictures – I wanted the words to paint the pictures for me.  I studied Spanish, Polish, Russian, and German, recognizing that foreign languages painted different pictures and opened up windows to different worlds.  At the age of twelve, my best friend taught me sign language.  I was captivated.  I realized that I think in English, Germans think in German.  But deaf people, I wondered?  How did deaf people think?  In addition to my regular university courses, I studied psycholinguistics just for the fascination of it, and worked as a sign language interpreter for several of my college years.

Thus a world without words, a life without language, was a new universe to me.

And that universe expanded.  By the end of the first week after the concussion diagnosis, as the slow swelling from the impact of the brain hitting the inside of my skull gradually progressed, I could not read at all.  Letters and words are symbols, symbols for spoken language – and spoken language had also begun to escape me.  I could engage in face-to-face interactions, but could not follow conversations on the telephone or voices on the radio.  Even music, my lifelong friend, became unbearable – any song with lyrics was now just a cacophony of noise to me, and I learned to rely on simple piano music as my sole companion during the day.

My doctor remained unconcerned.  “Ah, that’s normal,” he shrugged.  “It’s just a concussion.  Probably you need another twelve weeks to heal.  Happens to people all the time”.

I wasn’t sure if he was telling the truth.  What if he was just trying to soften the blow, so to speak, unwilling to tell me, just yet, that I would never read again?  My typical response to any type of medical diagnosis is to do endless research on the internet, but that avenue of inquiry was closed to me.

So I opened up new avenues instead.

I thought about the people I know who live lives that are not steeped in language.  Dancers, musicians, landscape architects.  Dog walkers, baristas, choreographers, woodworkers.

They represented ways of living that  I had rarely even considered.  Prior to the fall, I spent my days surrounded by people like me – marketers, software specialists, and business people.  Given their similar experiences, they had similar viewpoints to mine.  I had not even recognized my deep assumption that language was the substance of life, until that substance was taken from me.

So I reached out to those whose lives centered on passions independent of language.  Through interviewing them, I discovered new ways of looking at the world.  I invited the dancer for coffee, and she described how she expresses her life experience through the most subtle movements of her body.  I observed dog walkers and the joy they took in the simple pleasures of canine companionship.  I talked with a musician who perceives a universe of meaning where others hear merely a melody.

I had not realized my own bias – my belief that the one and only way to experience, and to express, meaning, is through written and spoken language – until that language was lost.  Though language will likely remain precious to me, I am grateful now that I see the world with an expanded comprehension.  I now truly understand that my words and explanations may not be the most accessible way to communicate with a dancer.  An image of a loving pet may be just what is needed to open a door with a dog owner.  I recognize that the musician may best hear my message if I embed it in a melody.

And thus I am intensely grateful for the community represented by the SAP Community Network (SCN).  Here, I discover a world of people whose way of experiencing the world and expressing their views on it is so very, very different from my own – yet so very, very universal.  Here, my colleagues and friends express themselves in ways that help me truly access their humanity.  Photographs, videos, blogs, music, cartoons, podcasts – each of us has a forum to express ourselves in a way that shares our understanding with others in our own creative ways, joining together in a common mission to help the world run better.

After several months, I’ve now finally recovered from the concussion and am able to return to my work that depends so heavily on my language skills and verbal communication; this is my first official blog since my return.

It feels like coming home, to once again use words to reach out to the world and weave a collaborative web every day with my colleagues.  But I have returned a different person – one who much better appreciates the multitude of dimensions of experiences and ways of obtaining meaning from the world. I’m certain it will make me a better marketer and will help me build richer and more fascinating personal relationships.

I am grateful and relieved, though, to have the opportunity to once again live in the world and express myself in the way that suits me best, and I write this now to encourage the “lurkers” - those sitting on the sidelines, hesitating to contribute to SCN, worried that their language, or their art, or their music, is not the “right” way to express their views. I had to be hit on the head to recognize that there are many right ways of expression, each of which resonate with a lot of people.

Your way of expression is the right way -- and it is the only way for you, for it is how you can best say what you have to contribute.  So go ahead, use it for the benefit of all of us to enrich the community. Don’t wait until your language is lost to discover that for yourself.

My journey from fresh ABAPer to SAP certified FI consultant

Like many SAP family members here in this forum, I too started my IT career as novice with millions of dreams and empty knowledge box about IT industry.

Joined Infosys as campus recruit in end of 2006. After completing world class training at beautiful Mysore campus, our batch was sent to Hyderabad and put into ERP stream. As soon as we heard the buzz, many people were talking about SAP SAP SAP. To be honest, I never heard of this name before. I was bit scared and embarrassed of not knowing anything about IT industry and technologies. Started thinking whether I have chosen right path or not!!

While many confusions running in mind, the day came when our batch was split into different ERP technologies. After long wait, fiiiiinally my number has come (As my name starts with V, I have to wait till end at all instances (Be it Lab Viva, written test, interviews etc.). Suspense has come to an end and I found I was put into SAP-ABAP training. After hearing a lot of buzz about SAP, I was so happy to see myself in to SAP journey. On successfully finishing the ABAP training, entered into the real battle field called "Project" on day one itself. It is quite surprising to say I don't know what is "Bench" means in 6.5 years of IT experience

Project work started and so the pain to understand what our functional folks and team lead is expecting me deliver. I felt, I was left in some other planet and asked to find the route back to home by interacting in alien language. This pain in turn forced me to come early and leave late from office. After dedicated efforts and hard work, I started understanding the language. But things were never easy. Here comes the evil "timelines". Project timelines used to be very tight. With very limited understanding of ABAP, the struggle still continues. That's the time I heard about SDN (Now renamed to SCN). I registered immediately with only motive to get solutions to my issues. But after spending a month time in SDN, I realized I was wrong. This is just not a place to get solutions but we find thousands of desperate minds coming together to share knowledge, help others and be updated with up to date trends in SAP.

As time passes, things came handy and I was comfortable with ABAP. Used to finish things in advance and started spending spare time to help others in the forums. This has become interesting day by day as helping others not only gives pleasure and satisfaction but also great learning. Because, If we give a solution to a problem, there are many experts who give most optimistic and reliable solutions. This wonderful aspect motivated myself to spend more and more time in SDN. At a point, I was so addicted to SDN that, SDN has been my browser home page for couple of years. Things were going great both at work and learning in SDN. After spending dedicated effort for 3 years, Luck has knocked my door in 2010 to send me to "Heaven in this world" called Swiss for onsite assignment. Swiss being my dream land from childhood, butterflies were flying in my stomach. Used to check the Visa portal on daily basis though it is known that it will take around 2 months to get permit and Visa. Formalities were done in 2 months and traveled to client location.

Being the only ABAPer at onsite, handling work pressure was not an easy task. Typical IT employee schedule started (Packed up for 5 days and chill out on weekends). Being in the dreamland, I couldn't miss the opportunity to roam around Swiss and Europe. I was on mute in SDN for about an year. During this period, with help of my functional colleagues, I started realizing my passion to shift to functional consultant. But then the million dollar question "Which module" has raised!! As I was doing good in ABAP related to SD, FICO and MM, respective functional counter parts suggested to move to individual modules. Finally it is me who has to decide. I was comfortable in SD, interested in FI and MM was in midway. At this dilemma stage, got a chance work in SABRIX (3rd party Tax interface) for 3 months. This is the transition stage where my interest in FI has changed to confidence and then to comfort level. After travelling back to India in 2011, immediately moved to FICO stream. The routine schedule as in case of ABAP started here again. Same pain to understand finance terminology, same alien business language (This time with users), Hunt in SCN for solutions and learning (As I shifted from developer to consultant, SCN also changed the name from SDN to SCN) etc...

Since FICO was my area of interest , I picked up quite fast in this area and onsite bell rang again in 2012 to same place and same client. Fortunately (As I got other chance for Europe tour)/Unfortunately(As I have to be away from SCN/Second home), all went well again. But after couple of months, I started thinking different to differentiate myself. So, decided to prepare for FI certification. Being at onsite with loads of work, lotz of places in hit list to visit, Guidance from fellow SCN folks, I managed to prepare for certification and clear the test in first attempt with flying colours. This has tremendously boosted my confidence level to do more wonders in FI. Apart from this, certification earned me more respect and visibility at work place too.

I would proudly say, without SCN, I couldn't be at a stage what I am today. Simple thanks to SCN and SAP family wouldn't be enough here.  Would like to spend more time at this amazing knowledge base, help others, learn from experts and on one day, become an expert

Special thanks to SCN moderators who constantly put their efforts to filter out junk and maintain the quality content in the site.

Thanks to my functional counterparts, managers and friends at work who constantly backed me with my decisions.

Comments, critics and suggestions are most welcome.

Best regards,

Vinod Vemuru

When did coffee corner stop being a points-free space?

I know it has been like this for a while but I missed the change. What was the reason? In my opinion it seems to be encouraging content that is maybe best posted elsewhere. The Coffee Corner used to be a good place to hangout. Now, between all the song lyrics and poetry it is hard to find the interesting content (unless you like song lyrics or poetry, I guess). I can't help feeling this stuff is being posted just to earn points, but I also don't feel able to report it for "points gaming" abuse as the Coffee Corner is "The official space where you can share and discuss any topic that is on your mind."

It seems to me that an "anything goes" space shouldn't be a points-earning space.

Or maybe I'm just in a grumpy mood today.

Steve.

It was on August 20, 2012 when we kicked-off the Blog It Forward initiative. This started a world journey where over 200 BIFers (still growing) shared their dreams, hobbies, wishes and amazing pictures of their daily life or places they've been to. One of the things that amazed me the most was how community members got so engaged with Blog It Forward and with each other. We really started to have a Blog It Forward family that welcomed every new participant and encouraged them share more about themselves. You of course can't talk about BIF without talking about Susan Keohan and Tammy Powlas who are the "Mothers":) of the Blog It Forward family/challenge. This is a great opportunity to thank them for their true passion, on-going support and nurturing to almost every BIFer.

On September 30th we will have a special virtual Anniversary BIF party where:

  • Each participant will be asked to be dressed with their traditional/favorite clothing, snack and beer/juice
  • Each participants will share their most significant BIF experience
  • Very interesting BIF statistics will be shared
  • A cool new BIF Game/quiz will be launched and played:)
  • Non shy BIFers will be allowed to turn on their Webcam

A more detailed one year BIF summary blog will be published later on as this is only the announcement about the Blog It Forward Party.

In order to kick off the celebration, I want to call Tammy Powlas and Susan Keohan and humbly request them to share how was the BIF year for them.

10 years of SCN - 2010 - the launch of Code Exchange

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY SCN!!!

I wasn't at SAP, yet, when SCN started, but I joined SCN right after starting my career at SAP in 2005.

When starting to look around in the internet to find material on how best to start with SAP NetWeaver Java I came across SCN and was amazed about how many material was available there. People helping each other with things they've found out and with many best-practices. I've tried to embrace this attitude and after feeling comfortable  writing in English I wrote my first piece of content on SCN through a Wiki page about how to use componentization in Web Dynpro Java followed by a document around embedding Xcelsius SWF files in PowerPoint.

I've worked on the Code Exchange platform as the respective project manager and started blogging about the platform in late 2009 with a series of blog post.

Going live in 2010 at SAP TechEd was a great experience. Not only did we manage to get the platform up-and-running. I could count on many community members who've helped making this platform available for everybody on SCN. With various, mostly legal, issues we needed to tackle at the end it was something that many people form the SCN community helped putting in together. People like Gregor Wolf, Ethan Jewet, Uwe Fetzer, Ivan Femia and many many others.

My special memory from the community

The SAP Mentors where even involved in the co-definition of the scope of the Code Exchange platform. Something I liked very much as this group of people raised many concerns which we were able to fix prior the launch in 2010. Something which is my special memory from the community.

Wishes for the future

For the future I hope that SCN can keep-up with the pace around all the new IT technologies and the challenges coming along with them. Creating a good navigation for the page is something key and a very challenging task. The easier it gets to access the information you want the better this is for the consumers and contributors of this platform. I hope that SCN opens-up even more and that the great content can better be consumed also outside of SCN.

So I wish SCN another 10 years of success and growth with a lot of new members and a bigger footprint in the overall SAP community.

Best,

Rui

How to get just the relevant new stuff from SCN?

$
0
0

It could be just me but especially lately trying to get just the new content that is relevant to my personal interests seems to be mission impossible on SCN. Part of the problem is that my interests are quite diverse, so following just one space doesn't cut it (and it drowns an unsuspecting follower in irrelevant emails). Even ABAP related content is spread over a good dozen of spaces, not to mention SD, MM, FI, About SCN, etc.

So far I've been trying to scan the blog roll daily, but now it's just not an option and if I miss a couple of days then the list becomes unmanageable. An experience with setting up an RSS feed for it in Outlook has been a huge disappointment. It sorts the blogs by the 'last activity' (I need it by creation date) and also shows just the header and author, but I'd also need to see what space is the blog from.

I wouldn't want to use Facebook or Twitter for this purpose, but if there is some other site or program that is safe to use at work I'd totally be willing to try. Mostly I'd be interested in the new blogs, but if there is some option for documents or discussions that'd be awesome.

How did I pass the certification Exam and few tips and techniques for freshers and professionals

Dear Fellows

I have just passed my SAP SD certification exam on 27th August 2013. T W  gave me an idea to share my experience so I want to share my thoughts and findings which I got after this exam. Thank you T W  for giving me this nice idea. These might be helpful for some professionals who are already in SAP career and also for those who want to get in SAP.

I will be discussing two aspects of certification exam. For those who are already in SAP profession in any module or area but not certified yet and for those who  are not in SAP profession but want to get in after passing certification and they are preparing for it or planning to prepare.

My Certification Preparation and Attempt

I have been working in SAP since mid of 2009. When I started my career I was not aware of SAP and its certification. I got into SAP accidentally I went in a local company here in Pakistan for an interview for the position of Customer Service Representative but they said since you are not experienced so we can’t take risk by giving this opportunity to you but you can avail Management Trainee Officer MTO Position in SAP. I accepted that and when I started my career I came to know that there is a certification of SAP which can be beneficial for me to get some other good position in consultancy or in any other client. When I heard its exam fee and got its manuals I got scared that what if I failed to pass it. I didn’t even try to study those manuals (SAP Certification Books) with this fear. My first two years of career were dedicated for learning and I learnt everything through SCN and my own efforts and testing in my DEV server. After two years my boss and colleagues suggested me to go for certification exam and then I started reading those manuals. When I read a few pages then few units, I came to know that these are nothing but just a piece of cake for me. I was already aware of all those things which were written and explained there with examples and it was just because of my experience and my contributions in SCN. I read both manuals TSCM60 and TSCM62 in my Samsung tablet. It was very easy and interesting to study in tablet as compare to study hard copies or in my laptop. I had finished those manuals almost one and half year ago but couldn’t appear in exam just because of that fear which was still there in my mind.

My friends and colleagues got their certifications in different modules and they encouraged me to go for it. I switched my job in new company five months back, AkzoNobel Pakistan which is again a support job. I decided to get certification to move in some consultancy firm. I enrolled myself with SAP Pakistan in end of August 2013 and I thought I will revise once again before one week of my exam date. Finally when academy guy told me that your exam will be on 27th August and be prepare for it I searched those two manuals again in my laptop and started reading them. One of my friend told me to do practice in dypo and I started it. It was interesting and I left manuals and practiced on dypo and some other sample questionnaires which I got from google. I just revised some specific units which were creating troubles in my preparation. When there were two days left in exam, academy guy shared some dumps (Sample question paper) with me and I also practiced those. This was my whole preparation and I was not assured even whether I will pass this test or not. I was nervous about exam but there was no stress in my mind and I even watched some movies in my last week of preparation

When I was there sitting on hot seat for solving the exam I was bit confused and excited too because I was thinking if someone can pass it without any practical experience then why can’t I pass it with years of experience. I solved few questions and all were correct and I was sure about them and it gave me more self-reliance. Then I just started solving questions without flagging any question and solved all 80 questions in one hour only. I checked all the questions once again and submitted it before one and half hour and I was sure to get 100% marks but don’t know which two questions were incorrect and the resulting percentage was 98%. I was excited and finally the fear was transformed in excitement.

My advice for SAP Professionals

For those professionals who are already working in SAP but not certified yet I have some pieces of advice. There are two beliefs in SAP professionals. Some people think that certification is nothing and this is just wastage of money and other think they should get certification to be SAP Certified Professional. For former I just want to share a blog written by Ravi Sankar with the subject of Top 10 Myths about SAP Certifications.

For later one I want to share that if you are working in SAP environment as SAP consultant or in any support role like me and its been more than a year then you can pass certification easily. Prerequisite for this is that you have personal interest in SAP and you are familiar with business processes, scenarios and SAP screens (front end and back end) and if you are in SAP from more than one year then you should know this all very well. The fear of failing this test will always be with you until you appear in exam so don’t wait for the right time or anything else, study the manuals just twice or even once carefully and do some practice on dypo or other sample questions and get your certification. No one is going to do it for you ever and you have to do it on your own even after a few months or years so why don't now? If you are waiting to get more experience and knowledge then trust me you are getting late for being a certified consultant. For an experienced guy this is not a big deal to pass exam with good percentage. I have asked you to study the material just once very carefully because I did this. If you feel you are not satisfied with studying it only once then repeat it and don't give up until you get some self satisfaction.

My advice for fresher’s

Those who want to get in SAP but they have not any practical experience yet, passing exam can be a little challenging for you. You guys need to study the materials with concepts understanding. Practice each and every exercise and don’t study the material like a newspaper or like any other syllabus book. SAP materials required practice along with studying. Open SAP screen with you while you are studying the material and see the screens and transactions. If you can manage to visit SCN forums then that will be a plus point and it will give you a lot of real time business scenarios. When you are done with your preparations, evaluate yourself by solving some dumps if you can get from your academy or from any other medium (Internet searching). Try to give solutions in SCN forum and be active member in your forum. If you can't give solutions then at least try to study the content and business processes. SAP exam will ask you all the questions conceptually. They are not going to ask you how many fields are there in any screen but purpose and use of the fields so it is good that you read F1 help or each and every field especially in IMG settings.

Three hours while attempting Exam

When you are sitting in exam and your time has started, don’t be panic and hurry. Take your time for every question, read the statements twice or thrice to understand the process and then chose your answer. Trust me three hours is more than enough for just 80 questions. Sometime examiner will try to confuse you with English statements and words like should be, must be, could be, can be and can only be etc. For a person like me (English is not my native language) these words can create confusion so before appearing in exam see the dictionary meanings of these words and then chose the answer.

Best thing About Certification Exam

Best thing about certification exam which also encouraged me to appear in it is that they have told you how many correct answers are there. If you have 5 options and there are only 3 correct then they have mentioned in question “Please chose the correct answer. There are three correct answers” My seniors told me that this was not the practice of SAP when they passed the exam but now they have added this in exam. May be they will again exclude this facility but currently this is how they are going to ask you to choose correct answers. In five options if you don’t know exactly which three options are correct then find two which are wrong. Rest of the three will be correct and you can choose them. Some time using the common sense can give you some marks Seriously this technique helped me in my exam and there were some questions which I was able to solve just because of this trick.

If they have not mentioned anything then it means there is only one correct answer and you wouldn't be able to choose more options.

Last but not the least is to be prepare for exam before at least one day of your exam date. In your last day don’t study the manuals. Try to solve some sample questions and have a good and peaceful sleep. Go in your exam with fresh mind and try to be there at least thirty minutes before. These are the things which academy guy will also share with you.

Don’t wait and get your certification. SAP certification will give you and your employer more confidence and you will feel the difference inside you after passing it. I have just shared my own experience and if you are agreed with my techniques and progression then and if you have your own then share those in your comments.

Good luck and stay blessed.

#SCNis10 SCN-Changed and still chaning my life

I actually started my journey in SAP through SCN. I was working in some other technology and had the HR system in SAP. When I googled about SAP HR and few SCN links were come to me. That was my first introduction to SCN. Then eventually I got introduced in SAP and while trying to move to this technology, that time I was wondering how to move in this area and found one beautiful blog by Otto Gold

"What would I do if I were a SAP newbie"

http://scn.sap.com/community/career-center/blog/2010/08/20/what-would-i-do-if-i-were-a-sap-newbie

This and few more blog from SCN had helped and motivated me also provided the right guidance to enter into SAP world. From my experience what I can say is in SAP if any one wants to know anything, technical, functional, motivational, career related thing can be found in SCN. Another thing for sure nothing is kept unanswered here.

After moving into SAP, for the numerous issues I got answer from SCN with and without posting(from others post) discussions in SCN.

I started contributing when my mentor and guide Mr. Debasis RoyChowdhury encouraged me about this. Also got a lot of motivation and guidance from Debopriya Ghosh. I thank them here for the support and encouragement.

For my next goal, learn SAP HANA,also I started my research in SCN and found lot of helpful document and blogs. Hope I will achieve it.

Last but not the least definitely I will Contribute to SCN as much I can do.

Thanks to the SCN mentors again for all your support...

How my SAP SCN Community helped me to achieve "Thought Leader" badge thrice?

It gives me immense pleasure to receive "Thought Leader" badge on SCN. It is a great privilege to receive such distinction and glad that I was the first person to receive this wonderful badge. I really did not know that I was the first person to receive this badge. I thought some other members might have been achieved this badge. But, I only came to know this when, Laure Cetin has thrown a challenge Find out who is SCN Thought Leader! (a challenge) to our community to find out the person who has received that badge. It is a different matter, by the time I read her blog, somebody has already answered her challenge. This shows how the people are active day and night on SCN. It is really fantastic and fabulous that SAP has created wonderful platform like SCN. SAP should really feel proud for the vibrant community created through SCN. Probably, SCN is the only platform, where thousands of people meet on a daily basis to share their knowledge.
I am very glad, in no time, I have received the same badge "twice" and now "thrice". It is a great pleasure and privilege for me. I can surely confirm without the help of the community members and their constant support / encouragement, I would not have reached this rare distinction. For me September, 2013, looks a great month. Incidentally, I have been selected as Member of the Month for the month of September, 2013. I should sincerely thank Laure Cetin for selecting me as Member of Month. I can understand how difficult job it is to select one member, when there are many more eligible people around in our community. I cannot take the credit of this Member of Month Ravi Sankar Venna - SCN Member of the Month September 2013, as it clearly goes to all the community members, who inspired me with their motivational and encouraging words.

Wiki Says, "Thought Leader" is an individual or firm that is recognized as an authority in a specialized field and whose expertise is sought and often rewarded. Good to know the definition of "Thought Leader", but, if somebody puts their enthusiasm, passion and patience in helping the community members, I am sure they are going to be recognized as "Thought Leaders".

Thought_Leader2.png
People might be thinking that I have received this badge three times, but, all this credit goes to our ever motivating community members. In this regard, I am dedicating my three times "Thought Leader" badge to all our Community Members. When we have wonderful community and amazing members around us, we should always feel proud to be part of this vibrant community. There are many people who constantly encouraged me during this process. I should personally thank each one of them. The most important thing, which helped me to achieve this is to answer whatever question posted at me. I cannot refrain myself from answering, if somebody asked a question or if there is an open item in my "communications" folder. Furthermore, I cannot refrain myself from following somebody in return if somebody sends me "following" request. This is the minimum courtesy that should show to my fellow members on this community, whether they are new buddies or experts.  It is always great pleasure in trying to see each question / comments in its own spirit, could it be small or big. Every member on this forum is going to post a question with some expectations. If we are ready to meet their expectations, then surely, they would remember us forever.

Writing "Technical Blogs" would be much easier compared to attempting something which touches the human sentiments and feelings. While writing such emotional blogs, it is always required to wear the shoes of different audiences. Unless we feel, it is really not possible to put the words on the paper. Some of those feelings come as thoughts when we are in the half sleep. Then our mind should brain storm around those thoughts and put them on the paper. I am fortunate enough, there are number of people who encouraged me in many ways. If I cannot mention their names through this opportunity, then probably, I am not doing justice to my blog. Susan Martin has encouraged in many ways when I posted my blogs / comments in certification / careers area, Jarret Pazahanick to reach my blog to the wider communities on the globe by sharing through networking sites, Jon Reed for his most thought provoking comments on my blogs to give me much more inspiration, Thomas Dulaney to encourage me from the core of his heart, Marssel Vilaça is always encouraging and translating my blogs to other languages, Tammy Powlas through mentioning that she has similar like me on my BIF Blog It Forward - Ravi Sankar Venna, Chirag Shah for constantly encouraging my each and every post on my blog, Jitendra Kumar Kansal for his motivational words on my blogs, Midhun VP for his cheerful words on my blogs, Narasimhulu Konnipati and Murali Babu Nallamothu through their encouragement many times, Vinod Kumar and Kumud Singh for introducing me through the BIF. There are also many other wonderful people who constantly encourages and inspires me on a daily basis, which I might have forgotten their names and I am very sorry for that. Without all your efforts and encouragements, definitely achieving this would not have been possible.

I always believe it is really not required to have great amount of knowledge to share your knowledge, but you should have a wonderful heart. Everybody is having tonnes of knowledge however, the time, patience and helping others is the main problem. I have seen many knowledgeful people, but they are so hectic in their lives and really no time to write something for the community. If you believe you all have that wonderful feelings to share your knowledge and help our community to grow further then surely you would be recognised on SCN. There are many people I always admire on SCN for their wonderful commitment, people like Jürgen L and Gordon Du. I was having pleasure of competing with them for SCN top position in 2009 for few months. They are fantastic and helped the people beyond boundaries with their unwavering commitment. I would strongly believe we have so many such wonderful moons and stars in our community to make our SCN sky more shining. We should always feel proud of those people, who are with us by giving their helping hand.

During 2009, I was very much committed at least for 6 months, mostly contributing on weekends. Later, I became inactive for few years, though answering not that frequently. It was mainly due to different commitments at that point of time. But, now I regret for not being fully active for all these years. But, it is always part of life and we need to accept it. Now when we see many young guns are answering the people and giving their wonderful helping hand, it is always a great and happy feeling to look at their commitment. There could many technical forums / websites on the internet relating to SAP, but I believe SCN is the most vibrant in terms of sharing knowledge, comrade feeling and helping each other. During the initial days, I can still remember, SDN was more of solving technical problems in the forums and lot of technical articles / blogs / wikis. Now, I can clearly see there is lot of changing in the dimension and I could see lot of spirit. The spirit among is people is amazingly increased and the participation of members in BIF is one of the great examples. The whole credit should goes to Moshe Naveh. With his wonderful idea, he has transformed the whole spirit of SCN. You can witness this though Blog It Forward (BIF) Chain: how many people have joined this wonderful journey. It gives wonderful opportunity to all the members to know much about cultures, personal details and many more things, but not just SAP.

When I was introduced to new team members on the project, they says they never met me before. As soon as I said my name, they recognize me as a person from SCN, who contributes a lot. It gives me immense pleasure they are recognizing me through SCN. Probably, if SCN is not there, I do feel that I would not have known to many people on this globe. There are many linkedin requests, Inmails comes to me on a daily basis as request and suggestion for their career / problems in their daily work. I hardly know those people. But, I never say "NO" in helping their queries, it is one of my weakness (may be strength??). It is a different matter, I never know nearly half of my linkedin connections personally, still, growing. I could surely say, I have so many professional connections across the globe, only because of SCN. At the end of the day, I have not earned any money or gold mines, it is a great personal satisfaction for the work that I have done on SCN. Whenever, I go outside of home, I always feel that the world is so small and I am the best, my heart says the whole force of SCN is behind me. Its wonderful feeling and you all should feel now.
When you are really committed for SCN and intending to share your knowledge, sometimes, you may have to do lot of sacrifices, your time, your family, kids and skip meeting with some of your friends. But, when you get the applause from the community members for your help, then you are going to forget all the sacrifices you have made. Probably, this is the only thing which has inspired me. The kind of respect that you are going to get from the fellow members is one of the real motivation for many members in our community. Without their encouraging words, it would really not at all possible to give your best. Even if tomorrow, you go to some other country or continent, people would recognize you by your name on SCN. That personal satisfaction is very precious and invaluable. Fortunately, SAP has created such wonderful platform for all SAP Consultants. At one point due to other commitments, people would become inactive. But, still they would feel very happy for their contributions and they would proudly share this with their children or grand children. What other special or satisfactory feeling you can expect from SCN?
Before concluding, the following qualities would immensely helpful in making much wonderful SCN Community.
  • Helpfulness
  • Share knowledge
  • Courtesy
  • Enthusiasm
  • Passion
  • Patience
  • Motivating Others
  • Commitment
  • Proud being yourself
  • Believe in SAP
Therefore, I can proudly conclude that our community members helped me to share my knowledge. Whatever credit I have received is the credit of our members. I can reiterate that without their support and encouragement, I would not have achieved anything on SCN. Hopefully, this encouragement should continue and help each other on SCN, make it a more vibrant community. Now, there are more than 2.5 million members, which itself is a great proud moment for SAP. I am sure and confident that these members are to be increased further in the future and our community would be a benchmark in the future. I sincerely thank each and every member on SCN for making our community a great world. Keep up your high spirits. All the best for our members.

Blog it Forward (#BIF) - It's Magic!

Moshe Naveh may not have realized exactly what he started way back in August 2012 when he started this ‘Blog It Forward’ (or #BIF) challenge.  It’s very similar to the term ‘Pay it forward’ – where the beneficiary of a good deed repays it to others (The term was originally coined by Lily Hardy Hammond in her 1916 book ‘In the Garden of Delight’).

So what did happen? For me, it is a great chance to ‘meet’ new people in the SCN Community, to learn about their life experiences, their dreams, their countries and cultures.  I learned about delicious foods that are special to various #BIFfers, sports that they tried, animals they’ve loved, and alternate careers if this SAP stuff doesn’t pan out.

I suppose the first few #BIFers may have felt a bit tentative.  I know I did, even though (technically) nobody actually BIF’ed me. How much do you really share, who is going to read this drivel anyway.  It turns out that one of the characteristics of our community is that we seem to enjoy learning about others (so it’s not just me).  And the movement keeps growing, every day it seems!

The photos that were posted were amazing – from childhood candid shots to panoramic landscapes.  Movies and music were mentioned.  Of course there are many mentions of superheroes, ‘classic’ computer systems and other interests.

So to sum it up, Moshe is holding a virtual anniversary party and I don’t know about you, but I certainly plan to be there.

It will be held on September 30th (time and so forth will be published soon) so you can mark your calendars, save your dates.  There is signup form to indicate your interest too.

http://www.co2partners.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Celebration.jpg

And for me, I can only thank all of you, and especially Moshe, for giving me the chance to get to meet you.  To show my appreciation, I created a little Animoto with some of the images I captured from a variety of #BIFs. Are you a star in my Animoto?  You’ll have to click, watch and listen to find out.

Looking forward to celebrating with  you on September 30!

Join the Corporate Education Revolution by taking a free OpenSAP MOOC

The pace of technology change is accelerating. Every quarter, companies like SAP are coming out with new technologies, such as SAP HANA or mobile solutions, increasingly these represent major shifts. For customers these solutions create enormous opportunity but the pace of change is overwhelming.

In technology and business, classroom-style training--and other traditional knowledge transfer methodologies--can no longer keep up. When we talk to our customers, they tell us the biggest inhibitor to adopting new technology is a lack of trained people.

To solve that problem, SAP is the first major corporation to offer free Massively Open Online Courseware (MOOC) to anyone who wants to join. The first group of course participants completed a MOOC, called  Introduction to Software Development on SAP HANA, a couple of weeks ago.

MOOCs are notorious for low retention rates of 6.5% on average. This isn’t surprising, since the courses are free, it’s super easy to sign up and in a world of distraction and hyper-fast business cycles, a 6-week course can fall off the priority list. .

But the SAP MOOC numbers from two weeks back are super impressive. And I mean super.

Here some course statistics:

  • 18,033 learners were enrolled for day one of the SAP course;
  • When the final exam ended, this number had increased to 40,386;
  • 10,795 learners “wrote” the final exam.

Think about that: As the course went along, learner participation doubled to more than 40K learners and more than 10K learners took the final exam. Which means that the retention rate was 26% or a rate that’s four times better than the average MOOC.

Praise all around to Clemens LinkThomas Jung, Geoffrey Nolan, Rich Heilman  There are many more, but these are the people I know about.

http://scn.sap.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-84745-215186/607-400/openSAP.jpg

Here is part of the team in Walldorf when taping the course with Thomas Jung in the middle. Taken from Thom's blog post introducing the course.

From where I see the world, with SAP Mentors and SAP TechEd, companies that innovate new technologies must disseminate that knowledge to as many people as possible within the shortest amount of time.

Well-developed MOOCs are developing to be the key to success. New technologies create enormous opportunities. People want to take full advantage of these opportunities and this is why the flock to these courses.

That’s why I really believe this course is a watershed moment for corporate education. As far as I know, SAP is the first FORTUNE 500® company to do a MOOC. Ten years from now, people will look back and say that was the time when business and technological education experienced a phase shift.

It will be quite a challenge for universities to keep up and compete with company provided free courses. Clay Shirky blogged more about that massive change that is coming to higher education: Napster, Udacity, and the Academy

So, who’s behind this education revolution? Both global trends and tech luminaries, such as SAP’s Hasso Plattner. I’m in awe of the technology revolutions to which Hasso Plattner has contributed: real-time computing with R/2; client-server with R/3; and currently in-memory database with HANA. And now, via the Hasso Plattner Institute and OpenSAP, he’s bringing the education revolution to the enterprise via MOOCs.

Join the MOOC revolution and sign up for the Introduction to Mobile Solution Development that started this week and has already 23K participants. This excellent guide tells you how to get your system ready to get the most out of the course. Enjoy!

Build a Better Blog (Step 4): SEO, Tagging and Posting Rules

$

Readers who have been following the Build a Better Blog series will notice that steps 1-3 focused a lot on the importance of building a credible and authentic voice. Guess what? Those very same attributes are just as important when it comes to making blogs more appealing for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

audience.jpgRemember the good ‘ol days of larding down the blog headline and first paragraph with buzzwords in order to “game the system” and trick Google into ranking your content higher? Those days are over. Google is hot on the trail of disingenuous content creators by releasing new patches and algorithms to ensure it is providing readers with the best content.

There are numerous online articles that cover this sea change in search. My favorite happens to be “The Death of SEO: The Rise of Social, PR And Real Content.” It’s definitely worth a read because it provides a very holistic view of what the current and future search landscape looks like. Here’s a key takeaway:

But what does Google want? They want relevant, real content on the internet that people want to read and tell other people about. If Google doesn’t bring you the most relevant content when you search they aren’t doing their job.

Tag, you’re it!

Tagging your content with appropriate keywords is critically important, especially on the SAP Community Network (SCN). Not only does it help Google and other search engines identify the key subjects of your content – it also alerts other SCN spaces covering similar topics.  Be sure to add appropriate tags (i.e. Big_Data, Mobile, Analytics, Business_Trends, etc.) before you hit the publish button.

Posting for productivity

Notice how I added a hyperlink to the Business_Trends tag example? The hyperlink not only takes you back to the SAP Business Trends space on the SCN, a teaser for this blog also appears in the Recent Activity stream on the SAP Business Trends space. So if your blog is published on the Mobile space, but also covers topics like Gamification, Business Intelligence or TechEd, be sure to hyperlink back to those spaces to earn yourself additional exposure.

Content is No Longer King

Clearly, the SEO rules have changed. Think of your audience first, not search engines. Remember, content is no longer king. Your audience is.

Stay tuned for the next installment: Timing and Promotion.

I was blogged it forward by Blog It Forward - Vivek Singh Bhoj  and I would like to thank him for tagging me and giving me opportunity to be a part of this wonderful chain. This is very interesting and creative idea which made it possible for all of us to know more about each other's personal and professional life. I wanted to publish my BIF from last two months but it was on the back burner just because of my certification exam and some other official commitments.

My Introduction

My complete name is Moazzam Ali and I am from Pakistan. I was born in a village near Faisalabad. My parents shifted from village to Faisalabad city in 1995 for our education. I have completed my school education there and then moved to Lahore in 2005 for graduation. I was graduated in 2009 in business and commerce from Hailey College of Commerce which is part of University of the Punjab Lahore. I was told by my teachers and seniors that this institute is one of the best Commerce institue in Asia and I had enjoyed my university life and hostel life a lot.

I started my career in 2009 as SAP CS Power user when I was hired by Orient Electronics only three weeks after graduating from university. Orient is a manufacturing company here in Lahore. In 2010 I was given the opportunity to handle SD module along with CS and I ramped up my efforts to learn SAP more and more. I worked there for four years and in April 2013 moved in AkzoNobel Pakistan which is part of AkzoNobel Global.

I would like to share some pf my pictures with you guys. I have no more words to write here about myself so here are some pictures.

This picture was taken when we were living in our village house and I was sitting on my father's bike with my elder brother.

Some fun facts about my home town

Since I was born in Faisalabad so this is my home town but I am living in Lahore from last eight years so I love both the places and will be sharing some facts about both cities.

Faisalabd

Faisalabad is third biggest city in Pakistan, known as Layalpur previously and was renamed in the memories of Shah Faisal (KSA Prince) as Faisalabad. It is also known as Manchester of Pakistan because of its indusries and clock tower which is somehow similar with the clock tower in Manchester in UK. Interesting thing about this clock tower is that it has eight bazaars around it facing towards clock tower.

Faisalabad has one of the biggest agriculture university in world.

Lahore

Lahore is capital of Punjab in Pakistan and people say about it "Jinay Lahore ni vekhya! O jammya ni" which means a person who has not visited Lahore is not born yet and this is because Lahore is a historical city and it has many old buildings and memories of Mughal Emperors who ruled India, Bangladesh and Pakistan for hundered of years.

This is a night view of Lahore Fort which was the last fort of Mughal Emperors.

Questions I was Asked

What is your best moment in life?

May be the moment I opened my eyes very first time in my life on 19th of August 1986 and saw my mother's smile while she was looking at me and that was the only day when I was crying my mother was smiling. After that it never happend again and she alwasy got worried whenever I cried. There is not any single best moment in my life but whenever I see my parents and the happines on their face because of me, I feel like I am the luckiest person in whole world and my everything is just because of their prayers. May Allah bless them always and give them long life in the best of their health.

How did you get into SAP technology?

I have already shared this in my previous blog that I got in SAP accidentally. After completing my graduation I was hunting for jobs. I got an interview call from one of local company Orient Electronics for the position of CSR. During my interview they told me that they need an experienced guy for this position and offered me MTO position in SAP. I was not familiar at that time that what SAP is and how does it work. I was jobless so I accepted that offer and joined Orient as my first company and I will always be thankful for the company and my boss who gave me a platform where I could show my abilities and strengths.

I was blogged forwarded by ' MoazzaM '  many thanks to him for introducing such a great idea as Blog It Forward Community Challenge to help people knowing each other and to create a fun environment with all members

My name is Moshira Ismail ,I am from Egypt - Cairo ( the crowded capital ), I got graduated  from faculty of computers and information in 2008 in , once i finished my college i worked as a web developer just for 2 weeks , all of sudden i got an opportunity to join as a junior SAP MM consultant with senior consultants from SAP to implement SAP to Egypt National post organization

At first i knew nothing about SAP and what i will be doing or even it what is ERP , all what i know about that job that i will get introduced a lot to clients and help them to solve there problems using SAP which sounds very interesting to me as i love dealing with people rather than just sitting over my laptop all day along

That was the start of my career in SAP , after completing this project i joined another project and its roll-out  as an SD consultant in FMCG industry at which i found even more interesting than MM module with all the daily transactions and the interesting business issues .

2012 was my year of luck , i moved to a new company joining a building materials project  as a senior SD consultant ( happy to end it successfully,YAY )   and also i got engaged to my best friend ever .

Also 2013 i consider it one of my best years ever , I got married this year in March ( as we say in Egypt here ,I am still a bride as long it has not yet been a year )  ,Moreover i got certified in SD finally which made me amazingly happy

Crowd-sourcing new missions for SCN’s gamification platform

$

I started playing with SCN’s new gamification features yesterday and was fascinated by the missions.

You can only see some of the missions which are present and I started thinking about which other missions might be possible. I’m sure that the SCN team has a list of mission / badge ideas but I wanted tap into the greater community and crowd-source ideas for new missions.

Some of missions I describe below could be possible if user location (for example, via mobile device) was able to be used.

Some of the ideas are a bit crazy and probably not easy to administer based on the amount of associated work to collect all the necessary information.

I also didn’t consider privacy concerns which might be important for some missions.

I’ve started a list below and anyone can add their ideas. I just posted the description without any indication of the mission name.

Note: I’ve noticed that some people have started posted their mission ideas in IdeaPlace.
