Ignite!

0

One of the definitions of ignite, from www.dictionary.com, is to stimulate or provoke. And the purpose of this project is to stimulate people to engage as members of the SAP Community Network.  We want both new members and existing members to connect with each other by sharing quality information, providing honest and fair feedback, and participating in missions that will improve the community content, participation and relationships.

You may remember in my recent blog, "Emails, Pop ups, and Clickthroughs, Oh my!"Emails, Pop ups, and Click Throughs, Oh My!, I talked about project "Get Back" and the notifications that active members were receiving to update community records and establish new terms of use compliance.

Because of the complexity of the project, the tie-in with gamification for improved engagement, and the dependency on community and technology Gail Moody-Byrd and I decided to assess the approach, team and timing. Effective immediately, Gali Kling Schneider will be the project manager, and project "Get Back" will be known as project "Ignite". My thanks to Gail for helping to define the original project, connecting the appropriate team members and uncovering key data points that will help us drive this effort forward.

Sponsored by Chip Rodgers and Matt Johnson, and owned by me, this project kicks off later this month with these objectives:

  • Increase community engagement - measured by comments, replies/messages, likes and ratings
  • Expand community membership - measured by new members and (more importantly) members with > 0 points
  • Provide reliable, accurate data and improved reporting for community metrics - cleaned up and validated across multiple reporting mechanisms

Gali, as the project manager, is working on a project charter that includes these key deliverables to support the objectives:

  • Increased community engagement:
    • Enhanced UX / UI and "About SCN"
    • Gamification (aligned project)
    • Events
  • Expand community membership:
    • Improved registration process
    • Improvied login experience, including auto login, social sign on and "remember me"
    • Communication and encouragement through other websites and newsletters
    • Member and non-member outreach (mailings)
    • Referral program / functionality ...
  • Provide reliable, accurate data and improved reporting:
    • Relevant reports and dashboards (aligned project)
    • Account merge

Gali will begin regular blog updates on the project beginning April 24, to let you konw what is being delivered by when, and how you can participate in the project as key stakeholders.

Looking for a good beginners ABAP book.

Hello All,

I've pretty much been a strong functional SAP FICO person.  Lately I've been asked to become more invovled with ABAP work.  I can follow the logic fairly well but but to be honest I don't even know where to begin to write any code.  I would like to hear from those of you who are already using ABAP if you've found any particular books to be helpful in teaching you the system.

A lot of SAP books are way too general and are more like sales presentations than instruction manuals.  So before I buy a book I'd like to get some referrlas on which books would be a good investment in regards to learning SAP ABAP.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Dan Goodhart

Top 10 Reasons why you should (or should not?) participate in #sapcc

You may have seen a blog or a tweet (or two) about the SAP Community Challenge (#SAPCC).  If not, feel free to read it here.

This challenge is so the SAP Community - as a whole - can raise money to support Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières).

Today, MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF also reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols.

A lot of great people have already committed to the challenge, or sponsored someone in it.

I wanted to let you all know the reasons why you should (and should not) participate in the challenge.

First, if you don't:

10.  If we don’t achieve this goal, Bill McDermott will get a military crew cut

9.  John Appleby will stop making American women swoon with his British charm.

8.  Mark Finnern will give up music

7.  Lana Del Ray will always be the entertainment at all SAPPHIRE and TechEd Events

6.  Your browser will always be as fast as loading iTunes

5.  Chip Rodgers's jacket will no longer get its own seat on major airlines

4.  Future TechEds will all be held in Topeka, Kansas.  Even the EMEA TechEds.

3.  If you don't, James Oswald will stop drinking beer.

2. SAP will switch to using all special characters for transactions

1.  Hasso will never take you out sailing, ever

BUT, if you do participate:

10.  I will endorse you on LinkedIn

9.  Future Banes will have access to healthcare and the world will be a safer place

8.  HANA licenses will be discounted for participants by 99%

7.  Short dumps will actually be short

6.  You will achieve total clarity on all SAP Products and their direction

5.  He who must not be named doesn’t want the SAP Community to do something really cool

4.  All the cool kids are doing it

3.  You will always be able to find matching socks

2.  Free pony rides

1. We will know in our hearts that we have done something good

None of these claims are actually liable to come true - either the good ones or the bad ones.  Except for the very last one. That will definitely come true.

So visit the #SAPCC blogor go right to the Fundraiser page and make your contribution.  Oh, and one other thing that I can guarantee if you participate?  You will not regret it.

Blog It Forward – John Barton

Thank you to Jason.Cao for blogging it forward to me. Now it's my turn to answer some questions - and I've been asked some really interesting BIF questions.

My name is John Barton, and I'm a Solutions Engineer for SAP. I am a database specialist in the Data to Decisions group at SAP. I have experience in designing and architecting large scale enterprise databases for both on-line transaction processing and analytical databases. I have extensive experience with SAP Sybase ASE and SAP Sybase IQ. I have been learning SAP HANA both from the ground up and from the use case perspective.

unpaintedgolfhole.jpg

In Arizona we have a great climate but it gets pretty hot here with summer temperatures reaching 114 ºF which is around 45 ºC. The summer really is our winter time where we stay inside and avoid the weather and for us the summer drags on and we wonder if it will ever end.

A not yet played golf hole can be inspiring like a painter with a blank canvas ahead. The shot off the tee is like the first stroke of paint on a canvas it has direction and possibilities. Golf is a game of short connected cycles of determining options, analyzing risk and conditions, making a selection, visualizing the expected results and then hitting the shot. The results can vary widely and do not always turn out as expected but a well-played golf shot or hole can be inspiring.

I would like to blog it forward to the following people:

@douglas.hoover is a really good technical presales guy who loves getting complex product scenarios working he has some amazing talents and great technical insights to share.

@michael.breen I worked for Mike a few years ago and really appreciate his attitude and professionalism. He inspired me the first time I saw him hit the golf ball for a guy that does not get out to play much he has a lot of natural talent both on and off the course.

In keeping the BIF going, I am asking the following questions:

  1. What is your favorite place to visit in the world?
  2. If you could live anywhere in the world where would you live and why?
  3. What was your favorite job as a kid?

Jason CaoIf one of your life goals is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro you really should connect with @Rex Geissler who lives in Colorado. Let see if Rex will BIF and provide some inspiration and details on his trip several years ago where he lived at high elevation for a couple of weeks which took extensive planning and preparation to complete his trip.

Blog It Forward – Randy Swink

I am Randy Swink, an Enterprise Support Delivery Manager in North America and as part of my efforts to incorporate Social Media into my daily
routine, I am taking training from Jason Cao.  My colleague, Benjamin Wilk, BIF’d me and now it is my turn to participate in the Blog It Forward Community Challenge .

I work out of the Newtown Square office supporting Enterprise Support customers in North America.  Prior to returning to SAP in 2007, I worked for a BPO company and was a Functional HR Lead for a SAP customer.  I returned to SAP because I found I enjoy supporting customers more than being one.

For the challenge, here are my answers to Ben's three questions:

1. Share a fun fact/story about yourself that people don't know

I have played ice hockey virtually year round for almost 40 years (that makes me pretty old).  Although the years show, I still compete with players many years younger and do a reasonable job keeping up.  I play once or twice each week on my way to the office and then in several tournaments during the year.

Randy Swink.JPG

2. What do you enjoy most in your work and why?

As I said earlier, I enjoy supporting customers and as a team lead, I also get to support other Enterprise Support colleagues.  Like most in support, I get a lot of job satisfaction from helping customers and colleagues work through and resolve issues.

3. What was the most fun project you ever participated in and why?

While I was working for a customer, I participated in an ECC6.0 upgrade.  Not only did I learn from the experience,  I worked with a great team including our partner, Exaserv.  As with any project, we worked long and hard, but the upgrade went well with few problems and we managed to have a lot of fun along the way.

I would also take the opportunity to blog it forward to two of my Enterprise Support colleagues who I hope will  use it as an opportunity to get involved with
Social Media: Bob Bora and Ryan Timmons

I will ask them the same questions I answered for Ben:

1.  Share a fun fact/story about yourself that people don't know

2.  What do you enjoy most in your work and why?

3.  What was the most fun project you ever participated in and why?

Look for them on Blog It Forward Chain.

Blog It Forward - Matt Champion

Hi, my name is Matt Champion and I am a Business Solution Architect, supporting the Travel, Transport & Postal Industries for SAP, based in the UK.  I previously spent 10 years working for DHL, and decided to keep my industry focus but take a different direction in my career - moving from customer to supplier.  One year in and I can honestly say it was definitely the right move - I love working at SAP!!

I was set the Blog It Forward Community Challenge by Jason Cao who is an SCN Community Manager, and the trainer for a Social Media course that I was taking at the time of writing this post.  Jason has posed the following three questions:

1) What Inspires you?

My children are definitely my inspiration!

1-photo2-001.JPG1-photo3.JPG
They just amaze me every day, their intelligence, wit and humour is just staggering!  Both my wife's and my parents both live on the coast - so we spend as much time with them and at the beach as possible! (All seasons!)

2) What have you accomplished recently that you're really proud of?
Becoming an SAP Design Thinking Practitioner.
designthinking.jpg
Design Thinking is a subject that I have put a huge amount of personal focus on since joining SAP.  Why?  Because I have seen the power it brings and also having previously been a customer, I know that this approach can really can take the relationship with our customers to the next level; driving greater levels of empathy and deeper understanding.    I have also been trailblazing the use of Design Thinking approach in our internal account planning process; with some very positive results.
lookthinkdo.jpg

If you want to know more about Design Thinking I would encourage you read the post from a fellow SAP colleague - Heike van Geel - "Design Thinking Year of the Dragon at SAP - 10 Tips on Facilitation"  There is also a good 2 minute Design Thinking with SAP intro video on YouTube.

3) If you could be a superhero, who would you be?
It's got to be Superman!  Flying, superhuman strength, laser eyes ....  Not sure about how convincing his glasses disguise really was thought!!!  My earliest memory of a superhero is Superman, mainly from the movies, so for me he is the original superhero. (in the late 70's / early 80's the Superman movie special effects were state of the art!)

Thanks once again to Jason Cao for his excellent training, coaching and inviting me to Blog It Forward.  It is now my turn to Blog It Forward to others so Blog It Forward to Adrian Simpson, Steve Mawby, Richard Stokes, Ellie Lamey

Here are your three questions:
1. What is the strangest place you have ever been?
2. What is your favourite board game?
3. What is the best thing about working for SAP?

My First Impressions of the New SCN Gamification

Starting today, SCN has been loaded with some new gamification features. If this is the first time you have heard about the changes, I recommend looking at Chip Rodgers' blog Game On!  #Gamification Coming to #SCN (SAP Community Network) which covers all of the new gamified features that have been included. You can learn more about the team that worked hard to get these new features implemented at http://youtu.be/_9dumwW7XRo. The gamification is enabled using bunchball's nitro platform.

If this whole gamification thing is new to you and you missed the 2011 SAP techEd keynote with Jane McGonigal, I recommend you check out Jane's TED talk about howGaming can make a better world. I also recommend reading How Gamification of the Enterprise can kill the Dilbert-Comics, which focuses on how gamification can make changes in the enterprise application space. Though gamification may not be widely used in enterprise apps just yet, they have been around in the online collaboration space as long as I can remember. I do not think I have ever seen a forum that did not at least give points and rankings for the number of posts people have. If you are still not sold on the whole gamification thing, you can always ignore it!

Just as points have been on forums for many years, a point system has also existed on SCN, it is just having some changes now. The first change that I noticed and really like is that your points will no longer expire after 12 months. I think this is great! Partly because I had some points that expired and adding that in brought me up to a silver from a bronze. Woo-hoo! Of course the benefit of having points expire is that it encourages members to keep contributing in order to keep their status. I think not expiring is good because people shouldn't be punished because they are not active for a while, which could be a result of working on a very time consuming project. There are also some improvements to the waypoints are assigned in the wikis explained in SCN Wiki points allocation changes .

Missions are a new feature that allow you to earn points and badges for completing a task. All of the missions that involving adding content require you to read the SAP Community Network Rules of Engagement as the first step to adding content. Much like the itunes agreement, I'm sure many people have never read this before and I would bet the mission requirement will help with that. Unlike the itunes agreement, it was clear and concise! I really like how you can click the gear in the lower right hand corner (pictured below) and see the specific requirements to complete the mission.

Screenshot_4_28_13_9_09_AM-2.pngScreenshot_4_28_13_9_09_AM-3.png

Something I would like to see is some missions or points around code exchange. Some reward for contributing to a project or having so many people download a project that you started. I also think that a badge would be a great place to show off and verify any SAP certifications.

To the SCN team: Good job! Congrats on going live!

You’ve been hearing about it for months now and today we’ve finally flipped the switch!

We’re LIVE with gamification for SAP Community Network!

We just went live this morning and already the community is buzzing inside SCN and on Twitter about the new SCN gamification platform.

Game-Badges.jpg

The project team has been working tirelessly for months to make sure all elements worked correctly for launch this morning, everything’s been run through a barrage of tests, everyone’s aware of what’s happening and ready for it, moderators and space editors have been trained so they know what to expect and how to handle things, data has been run through data conversion routines (several times), adjustments and corrections have been made, the SCN team is up to speed, FAQs written, and all is ready to rock and roll today!

You may not have known, but the gamification system actually went live in production over 4 weeks ago.  We wanted to make sure it would run under the load and high stress of 2 million unique visitors a month.  It has been running… in fact, both the old points system and the new gamification points system have both been running together in product since that time.  We were just showing the old system, and today we start showing the new system.

When I blogged back in February about gamification coming to SCN, I mentioned that gamification is actually not new to SCN, and shared some background and history of gamification for SCN and for SAP.  Today I’ll talk a bit about some of the new elements of gamification that I think you’ll be interested to know about.

Lifetime Points

Game-Lifetime Points.jpg

When we started SDN (now SCN) in 2003, we always measured reputation in the community based on the total number of points a member has earned since the day they joined (“lifetime points”).  But as the years passed, we saw some members that had been very active years ago, but moved into other jobs, or weren’t contributing in the same way, yet the system still showed them as top SCN contributors.  So last year when we launched the new SCN platform, we decided to base the reputation system on “12-month rolling points” in order to recognize and reward those members that were currently active in the community.  While the principle was a good idea, showing only the 12-month rolling points caused some confusion in the community (especially when members saw their points levels drop as their contributions from 12 months ago fell off their total.)

So we’re refining the approach again and starting today, we’re showing lifetime points in the masthead of SCN again!   We like this because it shows the total value of contributions you’ve made to the community.  We will still also highlight the most current contributions members make in the community and keep members interested in contributing in the moment.  All leaderboards within SCN topic areas will show 12-month rolling points – highlighting those members that are currently active in the space.  In addition, with the introduction of missions, we’ll have many new ways to keep everyone interested and motivated to keep earning more, completing more missions, and collecting those badges in your profile tab!

New Levels

Since we introduced them in 2010, we’ve had Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum community reputation levels for members reaching 250, 500, 1,500, and 2,500 points respectively.   That’s been great, but the four levels also had some limitations: 1) the low end of 250 points is actually a pretty high level of contribution before anyone gets any kind of recognition – we wanted to have some earlier and easier recognition levels so members could earn some status earlier and 2) we have members that have as many as 30,000 to 50,000 points – so we also wanted to create some more “exclusive” levels to recognize our superstar community members!

Game Points Levels.jpg

So we put our creative team in action and came up with a new set of levels.  We now have a total of 10 reputation levels.  The middle “star levels” of Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum stay the same – with the same points levels and the same star-ribbon icons you’ve come to know.  But we’ve added three new levels at the lower end we call “medallion levels“ with medallion icons.  When you start as a member you’ll be in the Glass level.  As soon as you’ve completed a few easy missions, you can move to the Aluminum level with as few as 5 points.  Write a blog, answer some questions, contribute in some other way and when you earn 30 points, graduate to the Steel level.

We also added 3 new levels at the top end.  We now have three “gem levels“ at the top including Topaz at 5,000 points, Emerald at 10,000 points, and the new super-high reputation of Diamond for those with over 15,000 lifetime points!  (Today there are a total of 65 SCN community members that will be in this rarified superstar level.)

Missions

Game-Missions.jpg

Missions are an exciting and engaging new element introduced with the gamification platform starting today.  We’ve launched with around 30 core missions you’ll learn about as you spend more time in SCN.  (For a list of all current missions, see the bottom of this gamification FAQ document.)  But the platform gives us the flexibility to add more missions over the coming weeks and months.  Today, we have missions to get members started like “I Was Here”, “First Steps”, and “Ready (Set, Go)” as well as missions for members working their way higher in the community like “Influencer”, “Storyteller” and “Answer Hero” missions for members that have a lot of followers, share a lot of great original content and contribute helpful answers in discussion forums.

In addition to our original missions, we’ll be adding more and creative missions at all levels to earn badges that will be both general missions as well as missions focused on important SCN topic areas like HANA, Analytics, Mobile, Cloud, CRM, and others.  We’ve even had suggestions from the community that we add some Easter egg missions, so you never know what kind of fun surprises we’ll have for you and other community members in the future.  All part of the now available with the gamification of SCN!

Join Us for the Launch!

Join us tomorrow (Monday, April 29) starting at 8:00am European time (2:00am ET, Sun 11:00pm PT) and over the next two days in the SCN Game Room, a virtual SAP Connect room open for two days.  The project team will be staffing the room around the clock on Monday and Tuesday. Come to the room and “hang out” with the SCN Team and other community members to ask questions, give your feedback, etc.

Thanks To So Many!

Congratulations and THANK YOU to the outstanding efforts of the gamification launch team of Laure Cetin, Jeanne Carboni, Audrey Stevenson, Oliver Kohl, Sean Yang, Krysten Bradley, as well as Johannes Unnewehr, Matthias Boehmert, Charles Carney, and Yaniv Bar with SAP IT, Mary Lahlouh and Kyle Clark with Bunchball, and Kevin Conaway and Nimi Berman with Jive.  Thanks also to our SCN Moderators and Space Editors, and our SAP Mentors who gave their time to testing over the last months and providing invaluable feedback to make this go live successful!

What is the SCN Reputation Program?

Your contributions are a vital part of the SAP Community Network. To reward our members, we've introduced extensive game mechanics to the SCN Reputation Program which award points, levels, badges and leaderboard positioning. Community members earn points when they contribute content and additional points when the community provides feedback and recognizes good quality content. Points are also awarded when members complete missions, and for other types of contributions such as participating in events or being recognized by community managers and moderators. Refer to our document on how to Build Your Reputation on SCN.

How are points assigned on SCN?

Points are assigned automatically to the author for each contribution such as a document, a community blog post or a wiki contribution. Community members also have the opportunity to award extra points for content they feel is high-quality and useful, with mechanisms such as “likes” and high ratings. In discussions, the original poster may mark answers provided by the community as Helpful or Correct. Additional points may be awarded at the discretion of community managers for certain community activities and achievements.

Activities and contributions made on SCN may reward community members with a badge and points when a mission is completed. See below for more information about missions and badges.

How many points do I earn for my contributions?

Note that blog posts created in your own user profile (personal blogs) do not earn any contribution nor feedback points. However, you can move your personal blogs to relevant topic spaces where they can start earning feedback points.

(Note: SCN Management reserves the right to modify point values at any time.)

What are levels?

As you participate and contribute on SCN, you will accumulate points that count toward lifetime points. All members are awarded a level status based on lifetime points.

Levels.png

What is a mission?

A mission is an assignment of one or more activities that can be completed to earn points and badges. These activities include:

  • Actions such as log-ins, updating your profile, viewing important content, etc.
  • Content contributions, such as a blog post, a document,, a helpful or correct answer
  • Feedback received or provided, for example: your blog post is Liked, you rate a good document

Completion of a mission can result in points with a badge, points only, or a badge only. Examples of missions include the “I Was Here” mission, the “I Blogged!” mission, the “Answer Hero Plus” mission, and many more.

Missions.png

What are the requirements to complete a mission?

Mission requirements are displayed when you “flip” or click on the gear image that shows when you hover over each mission in the Reputation tab.

First steps.pngFirst steps req.png

The requirements for each mission differ and become more challenging as you continue to earn them. Missions can also be completed more than once (these are known as repeatable missions). In the case of repeatable missions, you continue accruing the mission points whenever you complete the mission an additional time. Your completion bar shows 100% the first time you complete the mission, then it starts over from 0% again and never reaches 100% again since you can repeat the mission indefinitely.

What is a badge?

Badges are icons that are earned as missions are completed. In your user profile Bio tab you can see badges earned as well as badges greyed out, yet to be earned. When you hover over a badge you can see the name of the mission.
Your user profile reputation tab allows you make your 3 favorite badges visible to the community in the “Me in Three” section. These are badges that show in your hover card when other members hover over your name on SCN.

badges.png

What are leaderboards?

Leaderboards display the top contributors in every space based on 12-month (rolling points). This means that every day your number of points in a space is calculated and displayed in the leaderboard depending on the points you received in the past 12 months. However, the About SCN space is an exception; it displays an SCN-wide leaderboard with lifetime points and the top 20 contributors.

leaderboard.png

What is a Topic Leader, and does it differ from someone who appears in a 12-month leaderboard?

A Topic Leader is a member who is among the three leading contributors in a topic space on SCN, at the end of a 12-month contest period. The contest period starts each year on August 1and ends on July31. Topic Leaders receive additional recognition at events such as SAP TechEd conferences. More information about this program will be made available mid-2013. Someone who appears in a 12-month leaderboard is recognized for being a top contributor in this area, based on 12 month rolling points.

How do I know my current status in the SCN Reputation Program?

On every page on SCN, next to your name (when you are logged in), your lifetime points are displayed. Clicking on these points displayed opens a window that is a summary of your achievements, easily available to you when you navigate SCN.

You can find more information about your status in your user profile, the Bio tab gives you a summary of your achievements such as lifetime points and lifetime point level, and badges earned.

The Reputation tab is where the most detailed information about your reputation is displayed. Across the top of this tab you will see your achievement bar, which displays your points, level and badge information along with a recent activity feed.

In the achievement bar, you can also choose (using the Me-in-3 feature) which 3 of your earned badges should be displayed on your hover card, thus displaying the badges that you are most proud of.

On the left hand side of the Reputation tab you can also access the following pages:

  • History page, which displays all points earned, as part of a mission completed, over the last 6 months

  • Missions page, which displays the missions you have completed and earned badges for, a progression of the badges you are in the process of completing and who has recently completed these missions. When you hover a mission tile, a gear button appears, and clicking on it flips the tile to reveal the requirements needed to complete the mission.

  • Expertise page, which displays the spaces where you have participated (participation means writing content, such as blog posts, documents, comments, and replies in discussion threads). Your lifetime points in the topic spaces in question are displayed, as well as any badge that you may have earned by completing missions specifically designed for this space. (Please note that at the time of gamification launch in April 2013 there are no space-specific missions available yet.) Also, your point history in the space is displayed on the flip side of the space tile; you can access it by hovering over the space tile and clicking on the gear button.

  • Ranking page, which displays your rank across all of SCN, as well as your rank amongst your SCN connections (people you are following and people who follow you).

I have multiple user IDs on SCN, is it possible to consolidate my IDs and my points?

We currently do not have functionality to merge or consolidate SCN user IDs. Please check in regularly to find out when this functionality will be available.

Experienced User Questions

What changed with SCN? It looks different.

SCN has enhanced the reputation system with a new gamification system. Please refer to Chip Rodgers’ blog post to learn about the new system. Link:http://scn.sap.com/community/about/blog/2013/04/28/we-re-live-with-scn-gamification-scngameon

Why did my point quantity change next to my name at the top of the page?

The points that appear in the masthead or top of the page are now displaying lifetime points instead of the12 month rolling points. These points formerly displayed the points you acquired over the past 12 months, but now display your lifetime points.

Why has my level changed?

The new gamification system has incorporated more levels to the reputation program.

All members are awarded a level status based on lifetime points.

Where did my active contributor status go?

The active contributor levels are replaced by site wide lifetime point levels. These ten new levels are now managed by the new gamification platform that was introduced in April 2013.

What happened to the top participant list?

The top participants widget has been replaced with leaderboards.

Leaderboards display the top contributors in every space based on 12-month rolling points.  This means that every day, your number of points in a space are calculated and displayed in the leaderboard depending on the points you received in the past 12 months. However, the About SCN space is an exception; it displays an SCN-wide leaderboard with lifetime points and the top 20 contributors.

Why am I not showing in a leaderboard?

Leaderboards display the members who have earned the highest amount of points in specific topic areas over the past 12 rolling months.  If you want to appear on the leaderboard, you must be one of the most active contributors with the highest amount of points earned in that particular space.

If you are very active in a space, it doesn’t mean that all your points go into the space. When you complete a mission, the system determines where the points go to by identifying where the last action that got the mission completed happened. It can be easily defined when a mission is simple: publish a blog post. In that case, the points go to the space where the blog post was published. But if a mission is more complex and involves feedback from others, or viewing content somewhere, the last action could be in a space that you would not have expected.

Why is a space showing in my “expertise” area (Reputation Tab) when I did not contribute?

This is a result from participating in a space even if you don’t earn points by doing so.  Also, you may be earning points in spaces because you complete a mission in that space. Certain mission points go to the space where you completed the last requirement that resulted in completing the mission.

Why do I have “expertise” showing in spaces where I have zero points?

This is a result from participating in a space such as leaving a comment. You may be participating in a space but not earning points. For example, we don’t give points for writing a comment.

Why can't I complete a mission after finishing the requirement specified?

The requirements are only taken into consideration in topic spaces. Actions taken in personal blogs do not count toward mission completion.

How does the system suggest the new missions to me? What is the reasoning behind that?

The system tracks your activities in SCN and checks how likely you are to complete a new mission. It suggests a mission that you can take and complete based on your past activities.

How do I earn a badge?

Badges are earned once you have completed missions that award badges. In your user profile bio tab you can see badges earned as well as badges greyed out, yet to be earned. Go to your profile reputation tab to see details about missions and badges.

What is a badge?

Badges are icons that are earned as missions are completed. In your user profile Bio tab you can see badges earned as well as badges greyed out, yet to be earned. When you hover over a badge you can see the name of the mission. Your user profile reputation tab allows you to select your 3 favorite badges and make them visible to the community in the “Me in Three” section. These are badges that show in your hover card when other members hover over your name on SCN.

Why aren’t my points appearing immediately?

If you do not see your points appear it may be because your post is in pre-moderation.

In order to prevent abuse and spam, SCN automatically moderates new members. Content will not be published until a moderator grants approval.

Is there a limit on the number of badges that I can earn?

No. There is no limit on acquiring badges.

How do I change my hover card badges?

Go to your user profile, then reputation tab and hover over your badges displayed in the achievement bar at the top. Here you can make your 3 favorite badges visible to the community in the “Me in Three” section. These are the badges that show in the card that opens when other members hover over your name on SCN.

Why are some of my badges missing in the reputation tab achievement bar?

If you do not see all of your badges displayed, they are appearing in the “Me in Three” section of the achievement bar at the top of your page. These are the badges that show in the card that opens when other members hover over your name on SCN.

How far back does my point history go?

The past six months of your point history is displayed in your profile’s reputation tab under history.

Where did the wiki point request button go?

The wiki point request button has been discontinued. We are no longer manually assigning points for wiki contributions. Please read Moshe Naveh’s blog for more information. Link: http://scn.sap.com/community/about/blog/2013/04/10/scn-wiki-points-allocation-changes

I have a URL to someone’s reputation tab from SCN, but it no longer works.

Reputation link URL’s have changed with the new gamification system. Please go to the user profile reputation tab to obtain the new link.

What missions can I complete on SCN, is there a list?

The SCN site-wide missions that will launch with gamification are listed here.

Note that some missions are "progression missions", meaning you have to earn "prerequisite missions" before you can see them or earn them. Additionally, some missions have a certain Level requirement, for example you must have attained Bronze level or Gold level to be eligible to earn those missions.

Also, some missions are hidden until earned. These are "surprise" missions that you will not realize you are completing--you cannot follow the progress you have made towards earning those missions. We trust you will be happy when you find that you've earned one!

Crowd-sourcing new missions for SCN’s gamification platform

$

I started playing with SCN’s new gamification features yesterday and was fascinated by the missions.

You can only see some of the missions which are present and I started thinking about which other missions might be possible. I’m sure that the SCN team has a list of mission / badge ideas but I wanted tap into the greater community and crowd-source ideas for new missions.

Some of missions I describe below could be possible if user location (for example, via mobile device) was able to be used.

Some of the ideas are a bit crazy and probably not easy to administer based on the amount of associated work to collect all the necessary information.

I also didn’t consider privacy concerns which might be important for some missions.

I’ve started a list below and anyone can add their ideas. I just posted the description without any indication of the mission name.

Note: I’ve noticed that some people have started posted their mission ideas in IdeaPlace.

SCN Reputation Program Overview

$
0
0

SAP Community Network (SCN) is a dynamic and diverse community. Being part of this vibrant, passionate community is like being part of a family. As you become active on SCN, you will grow your knowledge, build an expert reputation and make friends.

Regular participation is important for getting the most out of your engagement within the community. Not only do you receive ongoing feedback and interactive discussions to exchange ideas, but being active on SCN is a rewarding experience. To support the experience, we have established a reputation program with game mechanics to measure activity, thank you for contributions; help you engage successfully in the community and establish credibility and visibility as a leader in the community while having some fun.

Building Your Reputation

Points and Status

Once you’ve become a member of SCN, you start accumulating lifetime points. These never expire and are displayed at the top of page next to your name.

Points are awarded to you when you contribute and when you complete missions. You receive additional points when community members recognize the value of your quality contributions by liking or giving good ratings to your content.  If you regularly contribute, you will increase your chances of being highlighted in the leaderboard of your space (based on the points in the last 12 months). Note that you are able to contribute in your “Personal Space” as well, but that area does not receive points and does not apply for missions, and will not show up in search for a specific space topic.

Points are assigned for discussion messages marked as correct or helpful answers, blog posts, documents and wiki contributions. More detailed information can be found in the SCN Reputation Program FAQ.

Levels

All members are awarded with a level status based on lifetime points. As you participate and accumulate points, you have a chance to celebrate achieving a higher level status. There are ten levels which begin with Glass (0-4 points) and continue up to Diamond (15,000+ points).

Missions

A mission is like a virtual scavenger hunt, assigning you with one or more activities to complete to earn points and badges. These activities range from actions such as, providing feedback on content to writing a blog post and answering a discussion question to being recognized as an influencer and thought leader. Completion of a mission can result in points with a badge, points only, or a badge only. Examples of missions include the “I Was Here” mission, the “I Blogged!” mission, the “Answer Hero Plus” mission, and many more.

Badges

Badges are icons that you will earn once you’ve completed a mission.  These symbols give you an opportunity to proudly display where you have been during your SCN journey and which accomplishments you’ve achieved to date.

Increased Visibility

It is important to have visibility in the community. Whether you are an SAP Customer, Partner or Employee, you should take advantage of the opportunity to build your reputation within the community. Becoming an expert has its benefits. Topic Leaders (top three contributors in a point category) are recognized on stage at the annual SAP TechEds and the biggest influencers, known by their actions, expertise and helpfulness are sponsored as SAP Mentors, receiving free admission to SAP TechEd, and most importantly, mentor shirts.

How can you increase your visibility? The first step is to maintain your user profile. The SCN user profile has been greatly improved, use it extensively so that it becomes your window to the community! Your user profile will provide other members valuable information about yourself, your content, the people and places you follow, and the reputation tab will be the place where you shine: recent contribution points, missions and badges earned, topic expertise, and ranking among the community and your connections.

As you contribute content to spaces in SCN, you accrue points in that space’s category. The more quality content you contribute; the more you will be regarded as an expert in that category. And if you are among the top contributors of your space, you will be listed as such in the space leaderboard. Leaderboards are posted in spaces to highlight top contributors and help them gain credibility.

So make the most of your engagement with others in SCN. In addition to getting answers from other experts, give back by contributing high quality to the rest of the Community. The SCN platform is social and you will be recognized for your actions. The best content is prominently featured on the site, you may be recognized formally as the “Member of the Month”, or your peers may nominate you to become an SAP Mentor. Additionally, SCN Moderators are always on the lookout for subject matter experts with community spirit to join their ranks. Display those characteristics and you too may be nominated for the role!

First Impressions of a Newbie

First of all, I must clarify my use of the term newbie.  I've been using SAP for about 10 years, creating OSS messages, finding OSS notes, and reading other peoples questions, posts, and blogs to glean little bits of information here and there.  I have used other forums for years, but the term "gamification" was completely new to me.

I registered for SCN for the first time a few days before the new gamification go-live.  I posted a question in the hopes of being able to resolve an issue with an SAP bolt-on software product.  This morning I logged in to see if there was a response.  What I found was a game.

What?  A game?  Did I post my question to the wrong web site?

But hey, I started out with one point in the game just for logging in to my account.  That ranked me somewhere around 285,000th place in the game.  Now that's motivation for you.

Any way, I checked the status of my question.  There were no responses.  That's OK, I didn't really expect any.  I think my question was moderated, and didn't officially get posted until Friday night.  It was only Monday morning so nobody had really had a chance to see it.  No problem.

So I got curious about the game.  I started looking at it.  I read a few blogs, and I looked at some of the missions.  Hmmm, they seemed easy enough.  *shrug* what the heck.  So, I "liked" a few things, followed a few people, and read the rules of engagement.  It was all pretty standard stuff on various social media websites, and other informational discussion boards.

I got myself up to 16 points -- I was really rolling.  I was up to about 121,000th place.  Then I hit the wall.  I tried to create a status update.  This was the last task I had to complete for the mission I was working on.  I read several blogs, performed several searches, even watched a video, but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

Frustrated, I left SCN to go and do some "real" work.  Several hours later, I returned, ready to look again.  Perhaps I just needed to work on a different mission.  Determined to figure it out, I decided to do a little more searching first.  I found an FAQ which showed the menu option for Create Status Update.  Aha!  I had found it.  Only I hadn't.  Status Update does not appear under my Create menu.

I scratched my head.  I did some more searching, and read some more blogs.  I found an FAQ which indicated that all posts would be moderated until the user had 30 points.  Could that be it?

Frankly I still don't know if I will suddenly be able to post a status update when I reach 30 points.  I'll give it a go -- it's time for a different mission, I guess.  That's the purpose for this blog.  My 16-year old is good a posting stream-of-consciousness blogs.  I guess it's my turn to learn.  I'm crawling into the 21st century kicking and screaming.

So, I started writing my very first (not just on SCN, but ever) blog.  I typed for a while and saved my work.  Then I tried to go back to it.  Oh, oh.  It was gone -- more frustion.  I had visions of a moderator sniggering behind his or her monitor.  It took about 50 clicks of the mouse searching through various menu options to figure out where my "saved" blog went.

Anyway, I will end this blog post by saying that the game could be good.  It's certainly an interesting way to get more people responding to other people's questions.  I'll be around for a little while -- at least until my question is answered.  Hopefully, I'll be able to overcome my initial newbie hurdles and become a contributing member of the community.  I'll try to complete a few more missions, and see what happens when I get to 30 points.  Since I'm still moderated, I wonder how long it will be before this blog is released for public consumption.

To the other newbies out there, good luck on your own first missions.  Hopefully we can all learn more about SAP together by playing the game.

Queries about New SCN

Hi All,

It is really good that the New SCN is much more colorful and charming.

I see a lot of colorful Icons in the Profile.

Here are the some Important Factors which I dont see in the New SCN.

1. In the 12 Month Leaderboard I can see only 10 Ranks. Earlier we use to have More than 25 Ranks. I was bit disaapointed in this aspect, because mine is 11th Rank in the earlier List

2. Difficulty in following/tracking the Questions Answered in the Forum.

3. I couldnt find any kind of help in getting the new Badges.

Can any one help me on the Point number 3.

Thanks & Regards,

Venkat Sesha

Game Mechanics on SCN: A Quick Look at How We Got Here, with Agility

When Laure Cetin was looking for someone to join herself and the new intern, Sean Yang, on the SCN Gamification project at the start of the year, I first supplied a few names of folks I could think of in the SCN team who would make good contributors to such a large project. Then Laure said “No, what I really want is to know if you can join this effort. You.”

Oh wow, I thought. I hadn’t even considered that possibility! I realized an ask like this had to be carefully thought through--I would need support from my manager, Patrick Flanders, and my team mates (too numerous to list here), who would need to step in to help with my normal SCN tasks.

I also knew I’d have a lot to learn about gamification and game mechanics. But of course, that was the exciting thing: a new angle to the editing and community management work I had concentrated on until now. I felt a charge of energy, and upon getting approval from Pat, I leapt into the fray with Laure and Sean.

Immediately I immersed myself in game mechanic literature and became a sponge, absorbing all I could on the topic, while at the same time coming up to speed on all the work that Laure and her manager, Jeanne Carboni, had already done over the many months before this point. I reviewed the project plan, eyed the target launch date, and gulped! April, still several months away, seemed like tomorrow--there was so much still to do!

While we had regular calls with our IT team and our vendors, Jive and Bunchball, things were progressing at a, shall I say, “measured” pace, partly because the teams were distributed. We were dealing mainly with:

Laure.jpg

  • California (Laure, Sean, and I, as well as the Jive project manager Nimi Berman, and the Bunchball team of Mary Lahlouh, Kyle Clark, and Dan Katz)
  • U.S. East Coast (Jeanne Carboni and Krysten Bradley from SAP and Kevin Conaway from Jive development)
  • Germany (our lead architect Oliver Kohl and IT project manager Johannes Unnewehr)
  • Israel (wiki team and QA team)

Getting on the phone together once a week was about all we could manage with so many people and so many time zones.

It quickly became clear that with an aggressive timeline like we had, the project needed a big boost, a chance to make significant progress in a short time. We needed to shift into a more aggressively agile mode.

So we invited Oliver, lead architect from SAP IT, Nimi from Jive project management, and Kevin from Jive development, to come to Palo Alto to spend a week in a project room and move things forward. Management on the SCN side (Chip Rodgers) approved the request, as did management on the SAP IT side, and before we knew it the assigned week in February was here.

In a serendipitous coincidence (is that redundant?), the conference room we wound up hunkering down in was named “Mission“. We decided it was a good omen! Working side by side, co-located like that, we made amazing, daily--even hourly--progress.  There’s something magical for business types like myself and Laure when we can describe verbally and with a whiteboard how we are imagining a feature should work, and then after the lunch break find that the developer has already coded something and you get to see it in action on the screen already! (Kevin and Oliver, you knocked our socks off!)

We literally saved weeks of long-distance back and forth by sitting in that room together, eating, drinking, and breathing the gamification of SCN. (OK, as you can see we also ate soft pretzels, croissants--Laure knows a wonderful bakery in Palo Alto!--and other similar “project food”.)

Before we knew it the week together was over. But it had a lasting legacy. We had experienced what it was like to work so closely together, and we weren’t about to lose that momentum! Laure, Sean, and I started daily calls with Oliver, and Oliver kept in touch on an ongoing basis directly with Kevin from Jive, via Skype. Our daily synch calls were crucial, both the ones our Palo Alto team had with Oliver and the ones Oliver was having with Jive.

As the project progressed towards launch, Sean decided to treat it like the playoffs and stopped cutting his hair. Like a National Hockey League player grows a playoff beard,” Sean grew “playoff hair”. We were in it to win it!

Like any project, however, we experienced some hiccups, and when SCN was hit by spam attacks in March, it had a serious effect on the resources for the gamification project: development of spam control mechanisms became highest priority (as you would expect). We realized that early April would be too early to launch game mechanics on SCN if we wanted a stable environment and the full attention of our IT resources, our support resources, and our own SCN team. So we pushed for our launch date to be moved, and SCN management agreed that a two-week extension was in the best interest of the community in this case.

The gamification core team, along with our vendors, did not take this extension lightly! We jumped into action to address issues that had taken a back seat during the spam control battle. In daily calls between SCN, SAP IT, Jive, and Bunchball, we knocked out these most important issues one by one, until all of them had been addressed.

Then, just when we had made the final go-live decision with all levels of management, we discovered an issue with some of the missions on our production system that were not there on our QA system. It was literally four days before Sunday’s launch. But we didn‘t flinch. Instead, the project team together with the engineering team from Bunchball and support from Jive turned on hyper drive to investigate the issue and fix it. On Saturday, Laure could finally give the all clear to the team and tell SCN management that we were on track to launch on Sunday. All systems were go!

Now the game mechanics are live in our community, and preliminary feedback seems to be positive. We, the SCN gamification core team (Laure, Oliver, Sean, and myself), feel good about what we’ve launched, and we hope the community will find the missions engaging and fun.

Of course, we know this is just the beginning: Phase 2 is already being scoped and expansion of the program is in the works. And while we can’t share much about the specifics of what Phase 2 will look like, you can bet on one thing: we’ll execute it in an agile fashion!

I am Jade Vachon and I work within the M-GTM organization under Solution Management and am incorporating social media in my marketing efforts.  I am taking training fromJason Cao.  My colleague, Benjamin Wilk, BIF’d me and now it is my turn to participate in the Blog It Forward Community Challenge .

For the challenge, here are my answers to Ben's three questions:

1. Share a fun fact/story about yourself that people don't know.

My adoption story and pic was taken from the AP and printed in newspapers when I first arrived in a cargo plane (as cargo) in the US from Vietnam.  And yes, that's my Mom and Dad.  And no, I'm still not famous.

Screen Shot 2013-04-30 at 8.22.48 PM.png

2. What do you enjoy most in your work and why?

Knowing I can help people.  If I know I've helped someone and added value, I know I'm doing my job.

3. What was the most fun project you ever participated in and why?

This may not be a 'project' but, driving cross country for the first time was great; our first cross country drive was from CA to FL.  We unfortunately broke down before we even made it out of CA but, we eventually arrived in FL 4 days later.  We've now driven cross country 4x: 2x West to East and 2x East to West.  We plan on flying next time around.

I would also take the opportunity to blog it forward to two of my colleagues: Corey Chubon and Dominik Fitterer who I hope will use this as an additional opportunity to get involved with social media.

Look for them on Blog It Forward Chain.
