#SCNis10: How I learned to stop worrying and love SCN

10 years ago, I was sitting in the Building 3 canteen in Walldorf. Some colleagues were talking about a new network for developers. It was straight after lunch on a warm, sunny day, so to be honest, I felt a bit drowsy. And a little bit dubious – what was this all abou? Would it really affect me?

A few months, or possibly just weeks later, all my doubts vanished. Now, I have no idea how I managed without it. SCN has been a real education for me. Anytime I need to find something out,  the best hits are generally SCN content.

SCN has also forced me to rethink fundamentally what I write about, and how I write it. Will this topic be interesting? What exactly is it about this topic that people want to know? When I miss something out, someone is sure to tell me ;-). And when I get it right, I love getting the instant feedback.

And this is the most important part: SCN encourages debate, discussion, and even disagreement. As a British person, I feel uncomfortable about declarations of corporate loyalty but here goes…:  I’m proud that SAP provides a forum where criticism is actively encouraged. Yes, proud – there, I’ve said it.

Proud – and relieved. I don’t think this is altruistic of us; I think it’s in our long-term best interests to hear these criticisms, and – where it makes sense – change our products accordingly.

SO: SCN makes me better informed, it forces me to write better, and it makes our products stronger. What’s not to love? Happy birthday SCN!
